Book The Grounds of Non Catholic Freedom in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Grounds of Non Catholic Freedom in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas Classic Reprint written by Arthur Maxson Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Non-Catholic Freedom in the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas The philosophical tendency in the present century has been to temper the one-sided, extreme Hegelian idealism by an increasing adherence to the results of psychological science, with a consequent emphasis on the immediate content and function of consciousness, and with a corresponding relaxation of the effort to define conscious ness in terms of ultimate reality. On the one hand this tendency has resulted in a more modest conception of the individual as related to the Absolute, while on the other it has increased in large degree the conception of the relationship of the individual to a larger organ ism, society. Aside from the purely psychological inquiry as to the function and content of consciousness as such, philosophy has con tented itself with stating the functions of the individual, his capacity, norm of conduct, laws of development, as a member of the social whole. But the conception of freedom, of activity, progress, devel Opment, worked out by the Kantian and post-kantian systems is taken for granted as fundamental in the present-day conception of the individual. Stated from the religious standpoint, however, the modern indi vidual is defined in quite different terms, or rather with added terms. Theological science readily grants the assumption of philosophical psychology, that consciousness is dynamic, that the individual is functionally Related to the social whole; but as philosophy takes for its point of departure psycho-logical process, SO theology takes for its point of departure the psycho-religious activity of consciousness, and defines the individual accordingly. On one hand this results immediately in a richer conception of the Absolute, for the Absolute of theology is not only such as is demanded by the logical point of view of philosophy, but is also such as is demanded by the point of view of religious life, which includes the rich content of an imaginary world of perfect being, of emotional fellowship with kindred Spirits, and of communion with the Absolute Father. Book Judged by the Law of Freedom

Download or read book Judged by the Law of Freedom written by Richard H. Bulzacchelli and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2006 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judged by the Law of Freedom explores a paradox central to orthodox Christianity--the assertion that human beings are responsible for their own salvation yet inescapably dependent upon God for their deliverance. Christianity's attempt to maintain both these truths simultaneously has been a focal point of serious and recurrent tension throughout the Church's two thousand year history. Judged by the Law of Freedom proposes a resolution for this paradox founded upon the metaphysical apparatus offered by St. Thomas Aquinas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace and Freedom represents Lonergan's entry into subject matter that would occupy him throughout his lifetime. At the same time it is a manifestation of the thinking that has made him one of the world's foremost Thomist scholars. The volume is in two parts. Part One is a new edition of "Grace and Freedom: Operative Grace in the Thought of St Thomas Aquinas", four articles written by Lonergan in 1941-42, first published in book form in 1971. This edition includes new notes and indices. Part Two is Lonergan's doctoral dissertation, "Gratia Operans", submitted to the Gregorian University, Rome, in 1940. Published here in full for the first time, the dissertation provides important context and background for the articles in the first part. Lonergan's thesis is that, from the sixteenth century onwards, commentators on Thomas Aquinas lacked historical consciousness, raised questions that Thomas had never considered, and obfuscated the issues. Lonergan's achievement consists in having retrieved the actual position of Thomas by adopting a historical approach that has reconstructed his intellectual development on grace. The majority of contemporary theologians now agree with the implementation of the historical method. What Lonergan also adds is a unique diagnosis of the mistakes made by the modern scholastic authors in their treatment of grace. Throughout this work, Lonergan discovers in Thomas a mind in constant development, displaying radical shifts on fundamental questions. Together the two parts not only reveal an essential step in Lonergan's own development, but also make an impressive contribution to Thomist studies.

Book excerpt: When Our Lord was tempted in the desert, the devil offered Him "all the kingdoms of the world and their glory." (Mt 4:8-9) It stands to reason that Satan was able to offer Jesus earthly kingdoms because he owned them. History has repeatedly demonstrated that earthly kingdoms remain a stronghold of Satan's evil works through man's lust for power. What then is a Christian to do while living under such earthly authority? Our Lord's rejection of Satan's temptation teaches the Christian to follow Christ alone and His Kingdom is "not of this world." (Jn 18:36). Saints throughout history, from Saint Peter to Venerable Fulton Sheen, have echoed Christ's example by rejecting the desire for earthly power and freely choosing to love God and neighbor despite living within modern day kingdoms replete with evil influence. They teach: "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29), "An unjust law is no law at all" (Saint Augustine of Hippo), and not to "wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person" (Saint Teresa of Calcutta). Following the method Saint Thomas Aquinas used in Summa Theologiae, Summa Libertas draws on Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the writings of the saints to guide a sound case for a libertarian Christianity. Readers will find that not only are the principles of liberty compatible with the faith-they are, in fact, necessary.

Concerning the nature of God, this selection includes Aquinas' arguments for God's existence, his description of God's metaphysical attributes, and his exploration of how God interacts with creation and the people who inhabit it. In the portion of the selection focusing on sin, Aquinas asks and answers the questions of what sin is and how it affects human beings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aquinas Ethicus, or the Moral Teaching of St. Thomas, Vol. 2: A Translation of the Principal Portions of the Second Part of the "Summa Theologica," With Notes R. Prudence lies in the reason. Now reason's proper Office is to rule and govern; and therefore it is proper to every one to have reason and prudence, in SO far as he has any part in ruling and governing. But to rule and govern is not the Office of the subject, inasmuch as he is a subject, but rather to be ruled and governed; and therefore prudence is not the virtue Of the subject as such. But because every man, inasmuch as he is reasonable, has some share in governing according to the free choice of.
