When I woke to my first day of imprisonment, I was a much wiser man. I felt refreshed but ten years older. I woke to a dignified enlightenment that I am certain I was unaware of only a day sooner. It is difficult to explain the cosmic feeling of sudden enlightenment that occurred during my sleep, however, from that day forward, I knew. I knew that my sacrifices landed me in the cell I woke up in. I knew it was my destiny. I got up and walked to my desk and wrote, 'The Groove Scriptures, ' at the top of a piece of paper. From there, I wrote everything that came to me in my sleep. It didn't come to me in a dream that some might characterize as a vision; it came to me more as a sudden epiphany downloaded. I just knew. I finished delivering The Groove Scriptures to paper on July 16, 2007. When they were complete, I took to the task of spreading the word. I've never met a proud Hoover who has met the system of principles and beliefs in disdain or with total disagreement. My conscience was awakened to the reality that was my own. I was willing to live for, die for, and risked being captured or killed for the Groove! I made the ultimate sacrifices for the Groove and recognized that I had done so since becoming one with the Groove. I recognized that the Groove took the place in my life that God took in a monotheist's life. I recognized also that I was given this wisdom as a gift to keep giving. I recognized that I had been assigned by the energy that is the Groove, to speak for the Groove and spread the word to other Hoovers Grooving in the Groove so that they will know the truth and better focus their energy that is Grooving. I am a wiser man now. I am a stronger man now. Salute to the Groove for which I pray thanks. One Nation Under The Groove

Book excerpt: 'A jazz-shaped faith ... balances freedom with boundaries, the individual with the group, and traditions with the pursuit of what might be. I have discovered in jazz a way of thinking, living, communicating---a way of being ... a groove.' You don't have to be a jazz musician, or even a jazz connoisseur, for this book to speak to you. If you love God and his Word, and if you've longed to follow Jesus Christ outside the slick corporate structures that some American churches erect, this book is for you. If you want to discover a freer, more genuine expression of Christianity, Finding the Groove will be music to your ears, your heart, and your mind. Using brilliant metaphors from the world of jazz, Robert Gelinas reveals breathtaking possibilities for the body of Christ. What might a 'jazz-shaped faith' look like---and how could it help us fulfill the message of the gospel in a way no method, movement, or structured program ever could? How can understanding the beauty of jazz help you better understand Jesus, his vision for those who follow him, and his heartbeat for a world that is badly out of sync? But this book isn't about music. It is about a passionate, biblical, fully integrated way of looking at life and salvation that will free you to find your own unique groove in the kingdom of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, the Christian church has had a troubled relationship with the arts, whether literature, poetry, music, visual arts, or other forms of artistic expression. This volume is not designed to resolve the issues, but it is designed to present a number of different statements about various dimensions of the arts in their relationship to the Bible. The Bible is the document that stands behind the Christian church as an inspiration to it and to its arts. As a result, we have divided this volume into six parts: perspectives on the arts, culture and art, visual enactments, contemporary interpretations, music, and the Bible and literature. Many of the issues that the history of the interaction of the arts and the Bible within the Christian church has uncovered are insightfully and artfully addressed by this book. The wide range of contributors runs the gamut from practicing artists of various media to scholars within varied academic fields.

Book Street Scriptures

  • Author : Alejandro Nava
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2022-05-16
  • ISBN : 0226819159
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Street Scriptures written by Alejandro Nava and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an important aspect of hip-hop that is rarely considered: its deep entanglement with spiritual life. The world of hip-hop is saturated with religion, but rarely is that element given serious consideration. In Street Scriptures, Alejandro Nava focuses our attention on this aspect of the music and culture in a fresh way, combining his profound love of hip-hop, his passion for racial and social justice, and his deep theological knowledge. Street Scriptures offers a refreshingly earnest and beautifully written journey through hip-hop’s deep entanglement with the sacred. Nava reveals a largely unheard religious heartbeat in hip-hop, exploring crosscurrents of the sacred and profane in rap, reggaeton, and Latinx hip-hop today. Ranging from Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Bad Bunny to St. Augustine and William James, Nava examines the ethical-political, mystical-prophetic, and theological qualities in hip-hop, probing the pure sonic and aesthetic signatures of music, while also diving deep into the voices that invoke the spirit of protest. The result is nothing short of a new liberation theology for our time, what Nava calls a “street theology.”

Book Scripture Skepticism and the Character of God

Download or read book Scripture Skepticism and the Character of God written by Dane Neufeld and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a period of great religious upheaval, Anglican philosopher and ecclesiastic Henry Longueville Mansel (1820–1871) became famous for his 1858 Bampton Lectures, which sought to defend traditional faith by employing a skeptical philosophy. Understanding Mansel and the passionate debate that surrounded his career provides insight into the current struggle for ancient religions to articulate their traditions in a modern world. In Scripture, Skepticism, and the Character of God Dane Neufeld explores the life and thought of the now forgotten nineteenth-century theologian. Examining the ideological differences between this philosopher and his contemporaries, Neufeld makes a case for the coherence of Mansel's position and traces the vestiges of his thought through the generations that followed him. Mansel found himself at the centre of an explosive debate concerning the Christian scriptures and the moral character of the God they described. Though the rise of science is often credited with provoking a crisis of doubt, shifting ideas about humanity and God were just as central to the spiritual unrest of the nineteenth century. Mansel's central argument, that the entire Bible must be read as a unified witness to the reality of God, provoked disagreement among theologians, churchmen, and free thinkers alike who were uncomfortable with certain aspects of the scriptural portrayal of God's activity and character. Mansel's attempt to reconcile theological skepticism with scripturalism was misunderstood. He was branded a hopeless fideist by the free thinkers and a dangerous skeptic by high, broad, and evangelical churchmen alike. Many of the controversies in contemporary Christianity concern the collision between modern morality and biblical renderings of God. Neufeld argues that Henry Mansel, while a deeply polarizing figure, brought clarity and precision to this debate by exposing what was at stake for Christian belief and biblical interpretation in the Victorian period.
