Tuolumne complained about his feet; and, on examination, I ascertained that they were frostbitten. I immediately directed him to bathe them in very cold water, then anoint them with panther's oil, and wrap them up in cotton cloths. After doing this, he was put to bed and required to remain at camp for several days, by which time he fully recovered. One of these days, Stanislaus and I went out on a short hunt, but were overtaken by a dreadful storm, and compelled to take shelter for the night under a pine-tree. We built a rousing fire, and lay down to sleep; but in the course of the night I awoke, and finding the weather very severe and Stanislaus suffering from cold, I made him take my blanket In addition to his own. As for myself, I coaxed Lady Washington, who accompanied us, as near the fire as possible, and then lay down next her, having her shaggy coat on one side and the fire on the other. It was my first experiment of this kind, and I felt a little fearful for a while of having a troublesome bedfellow; but, being very sleepy, I soon forgot my anxiety in slumber. Once only she rose and withdrew for a few minutes, but soon came back, lapped my hands a moment, and again nestled down in her former position, apparently with the object of getting as close to me as I wished to get to her. It was late the next morning before I waked, when I found my shaggy companion still sleeping, and as calmly and peacefully as could have been desired. In the early part of the winter we also made ourselves snow-shoes, by bending tough pieces of green wood into large bows, and weaving over them strips of green hide. These we fastened to the bottom of our moccasins with straps of buckskin; and, having thus wide foundations, we were able to walk easily upon...

Book excerpt: The California Bear Flag and the University of California football team the Golden Bears emblemize the great animal that has been extinct in California since the 1920s but once numbered perhaps as many as ten thousand in the state. Forty years after its original publication, University of California Press proudly reissues California Grizzly, still the most comprehensive book on the bear's history in California. The lessons of the book resonate today as the issues of protection of wildlife habitat versus unfettered development of land for human use are debated with increasing urgency.

This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of James Capen Adams, Mountaineer Adams Grizzly Bear Hunter of California In the midst of this strange menagerie was Adams, the proprietor - quite as strange as any of his animals. He was a man a little over medium size, muscular and wiry, with sharp features and penetrating eyes. He was apparently about fifty years of age; but his hair was very gray and his beard very white. He was dressed in coat and pantaloons of buckskin, fringed at the edges and along the seams of arms and legs. On his head he wore a cap of deerskin, ornamented with a fox-tail, and on his feet buckskin moccasins. An excellent likeness of him, as well as of his favorite bear, is presented in the illustration, drawn from life by Charles Nahl, entitled Adams and Ben Franklin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man versus bear, bull versus bear, dogs versus bear... in nineteenth century California it seemed all the elements of Gold Rush California were aligned against the native grizzly bears. For nearly 100 years they entertained, fed, and helped sustain the pioneers, but in the end the bears were too dangerous to ranchers and families and they were shot and poisoned into extinction. Book The Bear Hunter s Century

Download or read book The Bear Hunter s Century written by Paul Schullery and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years from 1820 to 1920 saw the sport of bear hunting at its greatest flowering. Much of the country was still wild enough to support large numbers of both black and grizzly bears, who in turn supported a remarkable assortment of bear hunters. Some, like David Crockett and Theodore Roosevelt, became internationally famous. Others, like Wilburn Waters and Holt Collier, are almost completely forgotten, though their exploits were just as extraordinary. "The Bear Hunter's Century "brings to life the hard, thrilling lives, of these men. Not just a book of adventures, this a fascinating social history told with wit and style, a penetrating examination of the often inaccurate lore of bear hunting, and a celebration of the amazing skills developed by the best bear hunters.

Book excerpt: From the Foreword? The Grizzly Bear by William H. Wright, first published in 1909, is one of the best all-around books ever written on the subject. It is both highly informative and entertaining. . . . Wright began as a bear-hunter, and an extraordinarily successful one. He pitted his own strength, endurance, ingenuity, skill, knowledge, and craftiness against that of the grizzlies. . . . His most remarkable achievement as a hunter was killing five grizzlies with five shots, which he called "the greatest bag of grizzlies that I have ever made single-handed." . . . His book shows a hunter becoming a naturalist: Wright first studied the grizzly in order to hunt him, then he came to hunt him in order to study him. The Grizzly Bear treats the early history of the grizzly as recorded by the white man and the life and escapades of James Capen ["Grizzly"] Adams, and most important it recounts the true-life experiences of Wright himself. Although I have spent some eighteen years studying the grizzly, eight of them intensively, there are few points on which I would take issue with the accuracy of Wright's observations o his interpretations of what he saw?Frank C. Craighead, Jr.
