Book The Grey World Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Grey World Classic Reprint written by Evelyn Underhill and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grey World A Children's hospital is not a bad place to die in: failing forest or hilltop, perhaps, one may not easily find a better. It is clean and airy, and there are few opportunities for the hysterical confusion of leave-taking which gives a touch of horror and bewilderment to the greater dignities of a private decease. The Author of the Human Comedy, one fancies, did not pay much attention to our exits and our entrances. They seldom strike the imagination; yet, from the spectators point of view, they are not the least strange or important details of the play. On October the 15th in the year 1878, a small boy lay in the Princess Ward of S. Nicholas' Infirmary, dying of typhoid fever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crimson and Grey, 1921, Vol. 6 A preface is usually a long, dry article at the beginning of a text book, the fore-runner of the real battle of phrases. Now, this preface is intended to be neither long nor dry. This year's Crimson and Grey is a student publication and must be read as such If the writer of a narrative loses his story, if a drawing is out of proportion, or if the poems have a limp in their feet, recall that the said writer was probably recalled from his ideal compo-sing to the cruel plane of facts in the school-room by some irate teacher who could not know she was interrupting a masterpiece. Book The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey Classic Reprint written by Anne Brontë and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey If we respect the pieties of tradition, it is right and fitting that the novels of Anne Bronte should follow Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre and the rest. The Brontes created that tradition; they clung together; they refused to be separated. Charlotte may be said to have thrust the works of her youngest sister upon the public that had acclaimed her own with such violent enthusiasm and accepted Emily's somewhat reluctantly at her hands. And even now, in the second decade of the twentieth century, it is as if she still kept her hold of the frail Anne and thrust her on us. In the face of this almost supernatural tenacity, this persistence from beyond the grave, it might be indecent to raise the question whether there is any reason, apart from pious tradition, why the novels of Anne Bronte should be resuscitated. But we have got to face it. You can put it in two ways: What does Anne Bronte represent (besides pious tradition)? What place in literature does she fill? And if we should be compelled (and I think we are compelled) to confess that she fills no place at all except that holy and humble one her sister gave her, there is still a loophole for our charity and piety. She does represent something, if it is only the restless misery of women born into the Victorian age before their time. All the Brontes were born before their time, even Branwell. Branwell (in the late eighties and nineties) would have found plenty of people to condone his "errors"; while in the twentieth century, as presenting a beautiful and marked "neurosis," he would have been an object of veneration to our psychologists and psychotherapists. Our reviewers, with their boundless tolerance, might even have found a place for Branwell's "poetry." And Anne, though in many respects an ultra-Victorian woman, rigid in Victorian Puritanism and at the same time saturated with Victorian sentiment, Anne belongs even more than Charlotte, more than Emily, to the twentieth century. Book Stories in Grey Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories in Grey Percy Bellowes was not actually idle, had a good deal of ability, and wished to make money. But at the age of thirty-five he had not made it. He had been articled to a solicitor, and, in his own phrase, had turned it down. He had neglected the regular channels of education which were open to him. He could give a conjuring entertainment for an hour, and though his tricks were stock tricks, they were done in the neat professional manner. He could play the cornet and the violin, neither of them very well. He could dance a breakdown. He had made himself useful in a touring theatrical company. But he could not spell correctly, and his grammar was not always beyond reproach. He disliked regularity. He could not go to the same office at the same time every morning. He was thriftless, and he had been, but was no longer, intemperate. He was a big man, with smooth black hair, and a heavy moustache, and he had the manners of a bully.
