Book excerpt: With its shut-down mines, with its scarred and restive blue-collar descendants of Eastern European and Italian immigrants, Rocksburg, Pennsylvania, is in the midst of tough times. And no one has it tougher than its own police chief, Mario Balzic. Working harder and longer hours than he ever did in his long-ago rookie days, Balzic again pilots a black-and-white through the town's brooding streets. The recent death of his mother, whose warm presence is especially missed by his wife Ruth, doesn't make it easier. Balzic answers a call: a strange woman, Valery, mother of a young daughter named Coo, warns that her violent husband may exact a brutal form of revenge on a truck-driver with a shady past. She wants Balzic to head off the attack, but supplies few details. Balzic senses worse trouble ahead than suggested by Valery - and events prove Balzic's instincts apocalyptically correct. Meanwhile, at the local tavern, Balzic encounters Myushkin, a wild, deceptively eccentric Russian-American writer, with nine novels to his credit, no visible means of support, and an alarming facility with a .22 revolver. It's Myushkin who becomes Balzic's spiritual guide through the case - and a peculiarly American, distinctly personal brand of hell.

Book excerpt: When aliens check in, they check them out. The brand-new action-packed adventure with characters from the blockbuster movie continues! The truth may be out there--but sometimes it comes too close for comfort. That's when the men and women of a supersecret organization swing into action. Their job is to monitor the Earth for alien infestation--and send them back where they come from. Be warned: The less you know, the better. This is their story. Imagine not being invited to a party...and finding out that the scum of the universe had been asked specially. Imagine being really, really mad. Imagine deciding to blow up the host of that party--in this case, Earth. Thousands of alien warships are massing above the planet right now for just that reason. Someone on Earth asked the Grazers--the most hated aliens in the galaxy--to dinner. As if the threat of annihilation wasn't enough for Agents Jay and Elle to deal with, the Grazers are big, dumb, and very hungry, and they're stripping the entire planet of grass and trees. But the worst is yet to come. For Jay and Elle are determined to find out who invited these alien parasites to Earth in the first place...and the trail leads straight to MiB. Who at MiB would want to betray the organization--and all of humankind? And even more troubling, why? This time the truth isn't out there someplace. It's so close that Jay and Elle may not see it until it's too late. And by then, Earth just might be one big, empty salad bar. (c) 2000 by Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. All rights reserved.

Wood take us through the American South, inviting us to listen to its music -- blues, country, gospel, and rock -- and to the voices that have shaped its extraordinary, distinctive literature. Interweaving interviews with people both ordinary and famous with thought-provoking reflections on Southern life, history, politics, humor, religion, and cultural icons, The South is a matchless, impressionistic portrait of a people and a place.

Book The Edinburgh encyclopaedia

Download or read book The Edinburgh encyclopaedia written by Richard Yeo and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was edited by the scientist Sir David Brewster (1781-1868) and published in 1830 by William Blackwood (1808-1830). Organised alphabetically, with more than 150 contributors and 360 copperplate illustrations, the encyclopedia was particularly notable for its scientific articles - such as those on electromagnetism and the polarization of light - many of which were written by Brewster himself. Brewster's efforts meant that Scotland had produced a worthy complement, or even rival, to the original Encyclopaedia Britannica.
