Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the evening of October 17, 1961 twenty-thousand Algerians marched in Paris in defiance of and in protest against a curfew imposed by Maurice Papon, chief of the Paris Metropolitan Police. The protesters were met with ferocious and uninhibited violence. Eleven-thousand were arrested; more than one thousand injured; as many as three hundred were killed, many of them thrown into the Seine, from which their bodies were later recovered. In recreating the scene of the atrocities in Murder in Memoriam, his controversial alarum first published in 1984, Didier Daeninckx introduces a fictional observer of the riot, Roger Thiraud, a middle-aged history teacher in a public school, only steps from his home and his waiting, pregnant wife. In the first few minutes of the demonstration, he will be assassinated, in cold blood, by a member of the anti-terrorist secret police. For nearly forty years after October 1961, France would deny the killings. Upon the independence of Algeria in 1962 an amnesty put its perpetrators safely beyond prosecution. The records were buried. In 1981, Bernard Thiraud, Roger's son, is researching the archives in Toulouse, intent on completing his father's history of his birthplace, Drancy, now notorious as the site of a detention and transit camp from which Jews were deported to Auschwitz. One afternoon, after leaving the town hall, he too is murdered -- the victim of what appears to investigating officers to be a professional killing. When inspector Cadin of the Toulouse prefecture learns of the unsolved murder of the young man's father, he suspects a connection. But why would anybody want to kill two bourgeois, politically unconnected history teachers? Didier Daeninckx has located the link between the two murders in the history that France had yet to confront -- in its colonial racism and its complicity in genocide. Daeninckx made this connection in fiction, deliberately provoking its acknowledgment in fact. Murder in Memoriam anticipated by more than a decade the shocking revelations provided by the exposure, trial, and conviction of Maurice Papon -- the Parisian chief of police in 1961, and the never-named villain whose real crimes, unrevealed at the time of its first publication, haunt this account -- for crimes against humanity; for his part in the administration of the deportation of the Jews from Bordeaux to Auschwitz.

Book Exploring Green Criminology

  • Author : Michael J. Lynch
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-22
  • ISBN : 1317137418
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Exploring Green Criminology written by Michael J. Lynch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few criminologists have drawn attention to the fact that widespread and significant forms of harm such as green or environmental crimes are neglected by criminology. Others have suggested that green crimes present the most important challenge to criminology as a discipline. This book argues that criminology needs to take green harms more seriously and to be revolutionized so that it forms part of the solution to the large environmental problems currently faced across the world. It asks how criminology should be redesigned to consider green/environmental harm as a key area of study in an era where destruction of the earth and the world’s ecosystem is a major concern and examines why this has remained unaccomplished so far. The chapters in this book apply an environmental frame of reference underlying a green approach to issues which can be addressed from within criminology and which can encourage criminologists and environmentalists to respond and react differently to environmental crime.

Book A Homicide in Hooker s Point

Download or read book A Homicide in Hooker s Point written by Gloria Taylor Weinberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-01-17 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a quintessential storyteller at the top of her form, Gloria Taylor Weinberg delves into the sometimes painful realities of life to produce a hauntingly unforgettable novel. In the fall of 1950, eight-year old Vicki Leigh Bayle learns that prejudice is not always about color, and that truth, as adults define it, is malleable. She learns that love and hate are drawn from the same well, and that some of the people she loves most keep stores of each in equal measure. The day after neighbor Eric Magruder kills her kitten during a domestic dispute, Vicki and her father watch as Eric is gunned down in their front yard. Witnesses say he was killed by his father-in-law. But is that really what happened during that tragic weekend of violence? At least one investigator has doubts. Both Vicki and her father had access to a gun that day, and her father refuses to produce it. Why? A Homicide in Hookers Point is a fascinating tale of innocence and pathos colliding in a small community in rural South Florida. The story develops inexorably; building momentum as it evolves, all the while tempting the reader to linger over passages of lush, evocative imagery. I was struck by the authors insightful portrayal of people and places, which brought back fond memories of the simple, authentic life experiences that I had growing up in Clewiston near Hookers Point. -- Erik C. Larsen, Attorney, Winter Park, Florida.

Negger’s skillfully created a compelling puzzle, refusing to reveal all the pieces until the very end.” —RT Book Reviews (Top Pick) After escaping certain death, deep-cover agent Colin Donovan is back home on the Maine coast with his new love, FBI art crimes expert Emma Sharpe. Then Tatiana Pavlova, a London-based jewelry designer, arrives in Heron’s Cove, asking for Emma’s help—a prized collection from a lost era of Russian opulence, decadence and rare beauty has resurfaced, and Tatiana warns Emma it’s about to be stolen again. And Colin realizes his nightmare isn’t over. It’s just begun. Emma guards her past closely, and Colin is determined to unlock her secrets. As they investigate the mysterious collection and the equally mysterious Tatiana, they confront their greatest challenge. Heron’s Cove is a novel that is written with a gripping and suspenseful style that will surely have the most astute armchair sleuths and amateur detectives scratching their heads and guessing right up until the very end. Neggers does a first-rate job of creating scenes with images that are so vivid, one can almost breathe in the briny salt air along Maine’s craggy coast.” —The Nashua Sunday Telegraph
