Book excerpt: This book marks the centenary of Neil MacLeod's death in 1913 with the republication of some of his work. It also publishes for the first time all of the identifiable work of his brother, Iain Dubh (1847 - 1901), and of their father, Domhnall nan Oran (c.1787 - 1873). Their contrasting styles mark a fascinating period of transition in literary tastes between the 18th and early 20th centuries at a time of profound social upheaval. Neil Macleod left Glendale in Skye to become a tea-merchant in Edinburgh. His songs were prized by his fellow Gaels for their sweetness of sentiment and melody, which placed a balm on the recent wounds of emigration and clearance. They are still very widely known, and Neil's collection Clarsach an Doire was reprinted four times. Professor Derick Thomson rightly described him as 'the example par excellence of the popular poet in Gaelic'. However, many prefer the earthy quality of the work of his less famous brother, Iain Dubh. This book contains 58 poems in all (32 by Neil, 14 by Iain and 22 by Domhnall), with translations, background notes and the melodies where known. Biographies are given of the three poets, while the introduction reflects on the difference in style between them and places each in his literary context. An essay in Gaelic by Professor Norman MacDonald reflects on the social significance of the family in the general Gaelic diaspora.

Book excerpt: From Charlaine Harris, the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author behind HBO’s hit series True Blood and NBC’s Midnight, Texas, the first in a series of mysteries that hits as hard as its heroine... Lily Bard has no illusions about her little town being safe, or peaceful, or full of goodness. Shakespeare, Arkansas, was nothing but a name on a map when she moved here. But Lily has kept her head down in Shakespeare for four years: cleaned houses, blocked unwelcome memories, and honed her body into a weapon with goju karate. It’s as long as she’s lasted anywhere since the nightmare that changed her life, and she’s willing to dust around the skeletons in her neighbors’ closets—provided they mind their business about her past, too. But when a dead body is dumped practically in her front yard, she can’t look away and leave it to innocents to find. And as the investigation creeps closer to Lily, her clients, and the secrets they all keep, she knows her hard-fought peace is in danger. She’s living in close quarters with a murderer. The police are sniffing around her history. And once again, all eyes are on Lily Bard. She could leave town, and give up on the home she’s begun to make. Or she could stay, and root out the killer herself...

Book The Black Bard of North Carolina

Download or read book The Black Bard of North Carolina written by Joan R. Sherman and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For his humanistic religious verse, his poignant and deeply personal antislavery poems, and, above all, his lifelong enthusiasm for liberty, nature, and the art of poetry, George Moses Horton merits a place of distinction among nineteenth-century African American poets. Enslaved from birth until the close of the Civil War, the self-taught Horton was the first American slave to protest his bondage in published verse and the first black man to publish a book in the South. As a man and as a poet, his achievements were extraordinary. In this volume, Joan Sherman collects sixty-two of Horton's poems. Her comprehensive introduction--combining biography, history, cultural commentary, and critical insight--presents a compelling and detailed picture of this remarkable man's life and art. George Moses Horton (ca. 1797-1883) was born in Northampton County, North Carolina. A slave for sixty-eight years, Horton spent much of his life on a farm near Chapel Hill, and in time he fostered a deep connection with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The author of three books of poetry, Horton was inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in May of 1996.

Book Delphi Complete Poetical Works of The Confederation Poets Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Complete Poetical Works of The Confederation Poets Illustrated written by Charles G. D. Roberts and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 4547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederation Poets were a group of Canadian English-language poets of the late nineteenth century whose work expressed the national consciousness inspired by the Confederation of 1867. Their transcendental and romantic praise of the Canadian landscape would go on to dominate Canadian poetry until the twentieth century. They were also called the Maple Tree School due to how their verses portrayed a touching love for the Canadian landscape. The term ‘Confederation Poets’ was coined by the Canadian professor and literary critic Malcolm Ross, who singled out four poets: Charles G. D. Roberts (1860–1943); Bliss Carman (1861–1929); Archibald Lampman (1861–1899); and Duncan Campbell Scott (1862–1947). They composed poems in a classic form, often on themes of love or philosophical speculation against the backdrop of nature; and they all reacted to Canada’s growing industrialisation, favouring a retreat to the as yet unspoiled wilderness. This comprehensive volume of the Delphi Poets Series presents the complete poetical works of the four principal members of the Confederation Poets, with numerous illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to the life and works of the Confederation Poets * Concise introduction to the Confederation Poets * The complete poetical works of the four principal Confederation Poets: Roberts, Carman, Lampman (the ‘Canadian Keats’) and Scott * Images of how the poetry books were first printed, giving your eReader a taste of the original texts * Excellent formatting of the poems * Special alphabetical contents tables for all four poets * Easily locate the poems you want to read * Features two biographies — discover the literary lives of the Confederation Poets * Scholarly ordering of texts into chronological order and literary genres Please visit www.delphiclassics.com to see our wide range of poet titles CONTENTS: The Life and Poetry of Confederation Poets Brief Introduction: Confederation Poets Charles G.
