Book Understanding Greek Tragic Theatre

Download or read book Understanding Greek Tragic Theatre written by Rush Rehm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Greek Tragic Theatre, a revised edition of Greek Tragic Theatre (1992), is intended for those interested in how Greek tragedy works. By analysing the way the plays were performed in fifth-century Athens, Rush Rehm encourages classicists, actors, and directors to approach Greek tragedy by considering its original context. Emphasizing the political nature of tragedy as a theatre of, by, and for the polis, Rehm characterizes Athens as a performance culture, one in which the theatre stood alongside other public forums as a place to confront matters of import and moment. In treating the various social, religious and practical aspects of tragic production, he shows how these elements promoted a vision of the theatre as integral to the life of the city – a theatre whose focus was on the audience. The second half of the book examines four exemplary plays, Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy, Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus, and Euripides’ Suppliant Women and Ion. Without ignoring the scholarly tradition, Rehm focuses on how each tragedy unfolds in performance, generating different relationships between the characters (and chorus) on stage and the audience in the theatre.

Book Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage

Download or read book Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage written by Helene P. Foley and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the emergence of Greek tragedy on the American stage from the nineteenth century to the present. Despite the gap separating the world of classical Greece from our own, Greek tragedy has provided a fertile source for some of the most innovative American theater. Helene P. Foley shows how plays like Oedipus Rex and Medea have resonated deeply with contemporary concerns and controversies—over war, slavery, race, the status of women, religion, identity, and immigration. Although Greek tragedy was often initially embraced for its melodramatic possibilities, by the twentieth century it became a vehicle not only for major developments in the history of American theater and dance but also for exploring critical tensions in American cultural and political life. Drawing on a wide range of sources—archival, video, interviews, and reviews—Reimagining Greek Tragedy on the American Stage provides the most comprehensive treatment of the subject available.

Download or read book The Greek Tragic Theatre Vol 1 of 5 written by Thomas Francklin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Tragic Theatre, Vol. 1 of 5: Containing AEchylus by Dr. Potter, Sophocles by Dr. Francklin, and Euripiedes by Mich. Wodhull, Esq. Euripides was born in the island of Salamis, in the seventy-fifth Olympiad; his parents Mue sarchus and Clito having retired thither from Athens at the time that city was menaced by the powerful armament of Xerxes. Historians are by no means agreed as to the rank of our Poet's Father and Mother: the proofs which some en deavour to adduce of their nobility do not appear by any means convincing; and if we admit the oracle of Apollo to have been consulted by them during the pregnancy of Clito, in regard to the fortunes of their future Child, as an' attention to the voice of soothsayers is by no means peculiar to those of high birth or affluence, it might be too precipitate to conclude from thence, with Bayle, either that her station in life was superior to that of an herb-woman, or that the distressed circumstances of her Husband were not among his principal motives for changing the place of his abode. But whatever may have been the rank or occupation of Mnesarchus and Clit'a, they appear to have possessed the honourable title of free-born citizens of Athens.
