Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Testament, Vol. 3 of 4 Perhaps this is a question which never can be definitely settled, so as absolutely to preclude the Caesarean hypothesis: but I own it appears to me that the whole weight of probability is on the Roman side. Those who firmly believe in the genuineness of this Epistle, will find another reason why it should be placed at Rome, at an interval of from three to five years after the Apostle's parting with the Ephesians in Acts xx., rather than at Caesarea, so close upon that event. In this latter case, the absence Of all Special notices would be far more surprising than it is at present. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Expositor's Greek Testament, Vol. 3 I. In the case of no book of the New Testament is it more essential to a true understanding of its language, that we should have a clear view of the circumstances under which it was composed, than in the case of 2 Corinthians. It is the most autobiographical of all St. Paul's letters, and it abounds in personal allusions, which it is difficult, at this distance of time, to appreciate, and of which some will probably always remain obscure. It glows with the heat of fervid life,1 and was evidently written under the influence of strong emotion. And, if we do not assign it to its true place in St. Paul's life, we are likely to miss a good deal of the force of its earnest and eager words. It is, therefore, desirable to enter into more detail as to the occasion of its composition than was necessary in the case of a treatise like the Epistle to the Romans, the argu ments of which are largely independent of the circumstances of the author at the time when it was written. (6) are clearly out of the question, because the shorter Gospel of Mark follows upon the fuller ones of Matthew, or Luke, or both. We have then only to examine those in which Mark stands first. Either then Luke supplied Illatthew, - 0r Matthew, Luke. But first, both of these are inconceivable as being expansions of Mark; for his Gospel, although shorter, and narrating fewer events and discourses, is, in those which he does narrate, the fullest and most particular of the three. And again, Luke could not have supplied Matthew; for there are most impor tant portions of Matthew which he has altogether omitted (e. G. Ch. Xxv. Much of ch. Xiii. Eh. Xv.) - nor could Matthew have supplied Luke, for the same reason, having omitted almost all of the important section Luke ix. 51 - xviii. 15, besides very much matter in other parts. I may also mention that this supposition leaves all the difficulties of di erent arrange ment and minute discrepancy unaccounted for. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: With English Notes, Critical, Philological, and Exegetical, Especially Adapted to the Use of Theological Students, and Ministers Ir is with feelings of deep thankfulness to the Giver of every good gift - especially of all wisdom to plan, and power to carry out counsel into execution - that the Author has, after a very long period of most strenuous exertion, been enabled to send forth to the Public a Work, which, from its wide extent of plan, and no less com prehensiveness of particulars, may be said to constitute, in a manner, the results of the labours, - at least in the department of Theology, - of almost a lifetime. When the Author applied himself, nearly eight years ago, to the construction of a Supple mentary Volume to his larger Greek Testament, he little thought that he should afterwards be called upon to furnish what he has now been enabled to accomplish; but circumstances, over which he had no control, demanded it of him. That Supplemea Volume had been, the reader will remember, constructed in fulfilment of an engagement on his part to the Public, in the Preface to the Third Edition of 1839, - that any further accessions of new matter, or alterations, for improvement, of old, should be reserved for another Volume, to be formed out of whatever additional materials the Author might be enabled, out of his multifarious reading and assiduous study, to collect in the course of such a period as should, by the mercy of God, be granted to him, with competency of health and strength, to labour in the great cause to which he had so long devoted himself; so that the Volume should contain his amended judgments and latest views, on the very many disputed points, whether of reading or interpretation, occurring in the Greek New Testament. Book Pillars in the History of Biblical Interpretation Volume 3

Download or read book Pillars in the History of Biblical Interpretation Volume 3 written by Stanley E. Porter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-06-07 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume, like its predecessors, adds to the growing body of literature concerned with the history of biblical interpretation. With eighteen essays on nineteen biblical interpreters, volume 3 expands the scope of scholars, both traditional and modern, covered in this now multivolume series. Each chapter provides a biographical sketch of its respective scholar(s), an overview of their major contributions to the field, explanations of their theoretical and methodological approaches to interpretation, and evaluations and applications of their methods. By focusing on the contexts in which these scholars lived and worked, these essays show what defining features qualify these scholars as “pillars” in the history of biblical interpretation. While identifying a scholar as a “pillar” is somewhat subjective, this volume defines a pillar as one who has made a distinctive contribution by using and exemplifying a clear method that has pushed the discipline forward, at least within a given context and time period. This volume is ideal for any class on the history of biblical interpretation and for those who want a greater understanding of how the field of biblical studies has developed and how certain interpreters have played a formative role in that development.
