Download or read book Why Four Gospels written by A. W. Pink and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the New Testament contain four Gospels—four different accounts of the same Man? And don’t the Gospels contradict one another? Masterful Bible teacher Arthur Pink explains how the four Gospels do not contradict but rather collaborate in order to provide us with a deeper, multifaceted description of the person of Jesus Christ. In Matthew, we see Jesus as Messiah and King of the Jews. In Mark, we are introduced to the Servant of Jehovah. In Luke, we see the human Jesus as the Son of Man, Adam’s descendant. Finally, in John, we thrill to the supernatural Jesus who is undoubtedly the Son of God. No believer can truly know Jesus without having an understanding of the four distinct roles He fulfilled in His time on earth. Pink’s in-depth look at the four Gospels will boost your faith and bring you ever closer to a Savior who is fully human, fully divine, and above everything, Lord of all.

Book The Greek Testament Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Greek Testament Vol 1 of 2 written by Henry Alford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greek Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Critically Revised Text, a Digest of Various Readings, Marginal References to Verbal and Idiomatic Usage, Prolegomena, and a Critical and Exegetical Commentary; Containing the Four Gospels Let the reader refer to the last note, and follow me through its divisions. (l), (6) are clearly out of the question, because the shorter Gospel of Mark follows upon the fuller ones of Matthew, or Luke, or both. We have then only to examine those in which Mark stands first. Either then Luke supplied Matthew, - or Matthew, Luke. But first, both of these are inconceivable as being expansions of Mark for his Gospel, although shorter, and narrating fewer events and discourses, is, in those which he does narrate, the fullest and most particular of the three. And again, Luke could not have supplied Matthew; for there are most impor tant portions of Matthew which he has altogether omitted (e. 3. Ch. Xxv. Much of eh. Xiii. Eh. Xv.) -nor could Matthew have supplied Luke, for the same reason, having omitted almost all of the important section Luke ix. 5l - xviii. 15, besides very much matter in other parts. I may also mention that this supposition leaves all the difficulties of diferent arrange ment and minute discrepancy unaccounted for. Download or read book The Gospels and Homer written by Dennis R. MacDonald and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two volumes of The New Testament and Greek Literature are the magnum opus of biblical scholar Dennis R. MacDonald, outlining the profound connections between the New Testament and classical Greek poetry. MacDonald argues that the Gospel writers borrowed from established literary sources to create stories about Jesus that readers of the day would find convincing. In The Gospels and Homer MacDonald leads readers through Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, highlighting models that the authors of the Gospel of Mark and Luke-Acts may have imitated for their portrayals of Jesus and his earliest followers such as Paul. The book applies mimesis criticism to show the popularity of the targets being imitated, the distinctiveness in the Gospels, and evidence that ancient readers recognized these similarities. Using side-by-side comparisons, the book provides English translations of Byzantine poetry that shows how Christian writers used lines from Homer to retell the life of Jesus. The potential imitations include adventures and shipwrecks, savages living in cages, meals for thousands, transfigurations, visits from the dead, blind seers, and more. MacDonald makes a compelling case that the Gospel writers successfully imitated the epics to provide their readers with heroes and an authoritative foundation for Christianity.
