Critics say that journalists tend to represent Greece, its politicians and the people, in a very negative way. Against the background of the quality news media’s normative role in information coverage and the framing concept, this paper examines how the German news media covered the sovereign debt crisis in Greece recently, and if the current criticism is justified. To examine this, I gathered data from the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung to look at how the Greek debt crisis and the latest events were covered in the time period of 29 June to 19 July 2015. The articles are examined by textual analysis. The findings are contrasted with the theoretical and empirical background and the literature review.

It is threatening the stability of the European Monetary Union (EMU). After having piled up over 300 Billion Euros of debt, in 2010 the market mistrust in Greece dramatically increased, especially as the newly elected government revealed the incorrectness of the financial statistics of previous years. Finally, on the 23rd of April 2010, Greece was threatened by national bankruptcy and requested help of the other Eurozone members and the International Monetary Fund. Although Greece is one of the smaller economies of the Eurozone , its daring default has great effects on the whole community. The current debt crisis of Greece suggests that the pre-crisis structure of the EMU bore weak points. To prevent such a debt crisis in future, it is necessary to explore the reasons which led to it and their connection with the EMU structure. This paper analyzes the main reasons and outlines possible improvements by detailed exploration of the Greek crisis. First Greece’s entrance to the Eurozone will be investigated. After that, the major domestic problems which led to an ongoing deficit will be pointed out and the linkage to insufficient fiscal control will be established. Also the reasons attributed by the Eurozone such as the weak enforcement of the Stability and Growth Pact will be explored. Briefly, the Greek and international approach towards the crisis will be introduced. Before drawing a conclusion a brief summary of the consequences and their effects on the other Eurozone members is held.

Book excerpt: At the end of 2009, market players lost confidence in the Greek government and the ability to service its debt. The change in the general risk perception led to an upward pressure on government bond yields, causing a nation's refinancing costs to increase to unsustainable heights; the starting point of the current debt-crisis. Instead of restructuring Greece's debt accumulation, the European leaders implemented a tremendous rescue programme in order to save Greece and indirectly also their own banks. Therefore, the no bail-out clause was disregarded and the European Central Bank was allowed to interfere with the bond markets to reduce the fear of contagion due to the high interconnectivity of the financial market. The empirical analysis showed an extreme convergence between the German and the Greek government bond for the years 2003 and 2004, which however cannot be explained by the fundamental data. Nevertheless, the same country, which had almost zero spread to the German bond yield seven years ago, sees itself now confronted with tremendous high refinancing costs, while the yield for Germany moved in the other direction.

At the last review in May 2014, Greece’s public debt was assessed to be getting back on a path toward sustainability, though it remained highly vulnerable to shocks. By late summer 2014, with interest rates having declined further, it appeared that no further debt relief would have been needed under the November 2012 framework, if the program were to have been implemented as agreed. But significant changes in policies since then are leading to substantial new financing needs. To ensure that debt is sustainable with high probability, Greek policies will need to come back on track.

Book excerpt: The current crisis in Europe is being labelled, in mainstream media and politics, as a ‘public debt crisis’. The present book draws a markedly different picture. What is happening now is rooted, in a variety of different ways, in the destabilisation of national models of capitalism due to the predominance of neoliberalism since the demise of the post-war ‘golden age’. Ten country analyses provide insights into national ways of coping – or failing to cope – with the ongoing crisis. They reveal the extent to which the respective socio-economic development models are unsustainable, either for the country in question, or for other countries. The bottom-line of the book is twofold. First, there will be no European reform agenda at all unless each country does its own homework. Second, and equally urgent, is a new European reform agenda without which alternative approaches in individual countries will inevitably be suffocated. This message, delivered by the country chapters, is underscored by more general chapters on the prospects of trade union policy in Europe and on current austerity policies and how they interact with the new approaches to economic governance at the EU level. These insights are aimed at providing a better understanding across borders at a time when European rhetoric is being used as a smokescreen for national egoism.
