Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Modern Greece, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Conquest by the Romans, B. C. 146, to the Present Time In the composition of the following pages it has been my object to supply information, so far as it was possible, regarding those later events in the history of Greece, of which our accounts have hitherto been imperfect and unsatisfactory. With this view I have passed rapidly over the era which has been treated of by former writers, and confined my attention principally to the period subsequent to the reign of Justinian, during which the annals of the country have been almost totally neglected. But we find the tradition again taken up to be heightened in one part, and carried forward in another. Heliodorus, who had heard of this claim which Egypt put in for Homer, endea vours to Rrengthen it by naming Thebes for the par ticular place of his birth. He allows too, that a prier was his reputed father, but that his real father, according to the opinion of Egypt, was Mercury: he lays, That when the prier was celebrating the rites of his country, and therefore flept with his wife in the temple, the god had knowledge of her, and begot Homer that he was born with tufts of hair in his 1' thigh, as a fign of unlawful generation, from whence he was called Homer by the nations through which he wandered that he hidelf was the occaron why this Rory of his divine extraétion is nu known; becaufe he neither told his name, race, nor country, being afhamed of his exile, to which his reputed father drove him from among the confecrat ed youths, on account of that mark which their! Priers ereemed a terimony of an inceruous birth. T hefe are the extravagant Rories by which men, who have not been able to exprefs how much they ad mire him, tranfcend the bounds of probability to fay fomething extraordinary. The mind that becomes dazzled with the light of his performances, lofes the common idea of a man in the fancied fplendor of per feétiun ll'. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pausanias Description of Greece, Vol. 1 of 6: With an English Translation; Books I and II The text of Spiro has rarely been altered. A few of the most plausible conjectures, generally though not always adopted by Spiro, have been assigned to their authors in footnotes. In my translation I have not distinguished be tween Medes and Persians, or Ilium Troy. It is rather deceptive to an English reader to do so, and the Greek scholar can easily tell from the original which word in each case was used by Pausanias. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 1: Translated From the Greek Our author's work is a wild paradise, where if cannot see all the beauties so distinctly as in an orde Garden, It is only because the number of them is in finitely greater. It is like a copious nursery which contains the seeds and first productions bf every kind, out of which those who followed him have but se leered some particular plants, each according to his fancy, to cultivate and beautify. If some things are too luxuriant, it is owing to the richness of the soil; and if others are not arrived to perfection or maturity, it 15 only because they are over-run and opprest by those of a stronger nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Greek Revolution, and of the Wars and Campaigns Arising From the Struggles of the Greek Patriots in Emancipating Their Country From the Turkish Yoke, Vol. 1 of 2 Tm; contest betwixt the Greeks and Turks has employed so many pens, that he who now ventures to write on that hackneyed, and appa rently exhausted subject, must begin by explain ing his reasons for travelling over a beaten road, 'to which he cannot hope to attract public curi osity, since it is either satiated by preceding narratives, or drawn away towards more recent and important transactions: these reasons may be summed up in a few words. That moment ary interest, which induced a number of persons hastily to publish what they had seen or heard in Greece, exists no longer; but there is, and ever will be, a grave class of readers loving truth more than novelty, and desirous of becoming acquainted with the exact details of a revolu tion, that must take its place in the history of the world. As yet there is nothing calculated to satisfy their taste, for of the forty authors whom the struggle in Greece has called forth. Book The First Greek Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Greek Book Classic Reprint written by Clarence Willard Gleason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Greek Book The first greek book is an attempt to make, Within proper limits, a book which shall appeal to both teacher and pupil, from its logical sequence of subjects, from its directness of statement, and its conciseness and freedom from unnecessary details which hamper and confuse the learner. We have intentionally departed from the beaten path in several important particulars. The second aorist, a tense constantly used, is introduced early in the book. Contract nouns and adjectives, always a stumbling-block, are postponed to a more natural position than is usually given them. The dual has been removed to its proper place, the appendix. For the purpose of increased interest and freshness, as well as to introduce the learner early to practice in the translation of a continuous text, dialogues, fables, and reading exercises are given as early as possible and continued through the book. It has seemed to us more sensible to begin the study of forms with the verb, followed by the O-declension of nouns, as pupils find it easier to learn adjectives in the order of their declension, than to learn first the feminine, and later the masculine and neuter. Book Black Athena

  • Author : Martin Bernal
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2020-02-14
  • ISBN : 1978807139
  • Pages : 668 pages

Download or read book Black Athena written by Martin Bernal and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1990 American Book Award What is classical about Classical civilization? In one of the most audacious works of scholarship ever written, Martin Bernal challenges the foundation of our thinking about this question. Classical civilization, he argues, has deep roots in Afroasiatic cultures. But these Afroasiatic influences have been systematically ignored, denied or suppressed since the eighteenth century—chiefly for racist reasons. The popular view is that Greek civilization was the result of the conquest of a sophisticated but weak native population by vigorous Indo-European speakers—Aryans—from the North. But the Classical Greeks, Bernal argues, knew nothing of this “Aryan model.” They did not see their institutions as original, but as derived from the East and from Egypt in particular. In an unprecedented tour de force, Bernal links a wide range of areas and disciplines—drama, poetry, myth, theological controversy, esoteric religion, philosophy, biography, language, historical narrative, and the emergence of “modern scholarship.”

Book The Greeks and the Irrational

Download or read book The Greeks and the Irrational written by Eric R. Dodds and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this philosophy classic, which was first published in 1951, E. R. Dodds takes on the traditional view of Greek culture as a triumph of rationalism. Using the analytical tools of modern anthropology and psychology, Dodds asks, "Why should we attribute to the ancient Greeks an immunity from 'primitive' modes of thought which we do not find in any society open to our direct observation?" Praised by reviewers as "an event in modern Greek scholarship" and "a book which it would be difficult to over-praise," The Greeks and the Irrational was Volume 25 of the Sather Classical Lectures series.
