Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Altsheler began writing juvenile science fiction, when there were few books in the genre. Because Altsheler felt a responsibility to his young readers, he was careful to make his books historically accurate. His simple language and interesting plots are welcome at any age. Altsheler writes about the French and Indian War in The Hunters of the Hills. Robert Lennox, Tayoga and their older partner Dave Willet, a guide and hunter are the characters in this first book of the series. The story is set in the forests of Upstate New York. From the foreword "The Hunters of the Hills" is the first volume of a series dealing with the great struggle of France and England and their colonies for dominion in North America, culminating with the fall of Quebec. It is also concerned to a large extent with the Iroquois, the mighty league known in their own language as the Hodenosaunee, for the favor of which both French and English were high bidders. In his treatment of the theme the author has consulted many au thorities, and he is not conscious of any historical error."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A boy and a man sat in a room of a stone house in the ancient City of Mexico, capital in turn of Aztec, Spaniard and Mexican. They could see through the narrow windows masses of low buildings and tile roofs, and beyond, the swelling shape of great mountains, standing clear against the blue sky. But they had looked upon them so often that the mind took no note of the luminous spectacle. The cry of a water-seller or the occasional jingle of a spur came from the street below, but these, too, were familiar sounds, and they were no longer regarded. The room contained but little furniture and the door was of heavy oak. Its whole aspect indicated that it was a prison. The man was of middle years, and his face showed a singular blend of kindness and firmness. The pallor of imprisonment had replaced his usual color. The boy was tall and strong and his cheeks were yet ruddy. His features bore some resemblance to those of his older comrade.

Book The Quest of the Four

Download or read book The Quest of the Four written by Joseph A. Altsheler and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tall boy, dreaming dreams, was walking across the Place d'Armes in New Orleans. It was a brilliant day in early spring, and a dazzling sunlight fell over the city, gilding the wood or stone of the houses, and turning the muddy current of the Mississippi into shimmering gold. Under such a perfect blue sky, and bathed in such showers of shining beams, New Orleans, a city of great and varied life, looked quaint, picturesque, and beautiful. But the boy, at that moment, thought little of the houses or people about him. His mind roamed into the vast Southwest, over mountains, plains, and deserts that his feet had never trod, and he sought, almost with the power of evocation, to produce regions that he had never seen, but which he had often heard described. He had forgotten no detail of the stories, but, despite them, the cloud of mystery and romance remained, calling to him all the more strongly because he had come upon a quest the most vital of his life, a quest that must lead him into the great unknown land.
