Book Our National Parks and the Search for Sustainability

Download or read book Our National Parks and the Search for Sustainability written by Bob R. O'Brien and published by Univ of TX + ORM. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the US National Park Service’s efforts to allow for as many visitors as possible in the parks that are kept in as natural a state as possible. “Yosemite Valley in July of 1967 would have had to be seen to be believed. There was never an empty campsite in the valley; you had to create a space for yourself in a sea of cars, tents, and humanity. . . . The camp next to ours had fifty people in it, with rugs hung between the trees, incense burning, and a stereo set going full volume.” Scenes such as this will probably never be repeated in Yosemite or any other national park, yet the urgent problem remains of balancing the public's desire to visit the parks with the parks’ need to be protected from too many people and cars and too much development. In this book, longtime park visitor and professional geographer Bob O’Brien explores the National Park Service’s attempt to achieve “sustainability,” a balance that allows as many people as possible to visit a park that is kept in as natural a state as possible. O’Brien details methods the NPS has used to walk the line between those who would preserve vast tracts of land for “no use” and those who would tap the Yellowstone geysers to generate electricity. His case studies of six western “crown jewel” parks show how rangers and other NPS employees are coping with issues that impact these cherished public landscapes, including visitation, development, and recreational use./

Book Compromising Yellowstone

Download or read book Compromising Yellowstone written by Michael J. Yochim and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four case studies, all drawn from Yellowstone National Park's recent history, examine the relationship between interest groups and the National Park Service (NPS) in park policy-making. The NPS initiates and controls most policy-making efforts, with political influence common. Major interest groups include environmentalists, recreation advocates, business groups, and scientists. Differing motivations and perspectives on park purpose create controversies that usually result in compromises. / Case studies begin with, first, an NPS effort about 1960 to zone portions of Yellowstone Lake as non-motorized; conservationists and the NPS contested boating groups and some powerful politicians. The second study details efforts to close the Fishing Bridge village amid concerns that grizzly bears were dying in unacceptable numbers in that area. Business and recreatioinal interests contested the NPS, who received little support from environmental groups. The third study details the fire policy review that took place after the historic 1988 wildfires. Widespread scientist support for allowing wildfires to burn natually overcame economic and political opposition. The final study examines the ongoing snowmobile controversy, finding that all four primary interest groups are involved, strongly engaging the debate through litigation and political maneuvering. / Throughout, conservationists believe parks to be sacred nature preserves, and have the most supportive relationship with the NPS. Recreational groups cherish individual freedoms and strive to retain park access; they often contest NPS intentions. Business groups envision parks as exonomic generators, with a primary purpose being the promotion of local and regional economies; they are effective at compelling the NPS to compromise. Scientists lead in promoting science-based park management, but sometimes fail to provide consistent or timely direction. All interest groups assume that park resource exploitation is inappropriate, and find the NPS relatively open to their input. POlitical influence is pervasive, and in Yellowstone's case, generally favorable to economic enhancement and public access. / The compromise settlements may weaken overall park protections, but preserve Yellowstone as one of America's wildest places. Such controversies are the medium through which Americans contest core values that reflect conflicting relationships between people and nature, and by which Yellowstone is defined as a wild place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earth's landscapes are being increasingly impacted by the activities of man. Unfortunately, we do not have a full understanding of the consequences of these disturbances on the earth's productive capacity. This problem was addressed by a group of French and U.S. ecologists who are specialists at levels of integration extending from genetics to the biosphere at a meeting at Stanford, California, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. With a few important exceptions it was found at this meeting that most man-induced disturbances of ecosystems can be viewed as large scale patterns of disturbances that have occurred, generally on a small scale, in ecosystems through evolutionary time. Man has induced dramatic large-scale changes in the environment which must be viewed at the biosphere level. Acid deposition and CO increase are two 2 examples of the consequences of man's increased utilization of fossil fuels. It is a matter of considerable concern that we cannot yet fully predict the ecological consequences of these environmental changes. Such problems must be addressed at the international level, yet substantive mechanisms to do this are not available.

Book Post Fire Management and Restoration of Southern European Forests

Download or read book Post Fire Management and Restoration of Southern European Forests written by Francisco Moreira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of all the efforts made in fire prevention and suppression, every year about 45 000 forest fires occur in Europe, burning ca. 0.5 million hectares of forests and other rural lands. The management of these burned forests has been given much less attention than fire prevention or fire suppression issues, but the post-fire management of burned areas raises strong concerns (economic and social impacts, soil erosion and water quality, biodiversity loss, forest restoration). Although there are a few publications which address post-fire management, the focus of these has been either on general approaches to restoration or specific topics such as preventing post-fire soil erosion. This book is about the post-fire management of fire-prone forest types in southern Europe. It provides the first comprehensive overview of the topic, ranging from stand-level to landscape-level management, and from emergency actions to long-term restoration approaches.
