Book The Greater New York Reasons Why Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Greater New York Reasons Why Classic Reprint written by Edward C. Graves and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater New York, Reasons Why In response to your request for a continuation of the argument before you, Which led to the publication of the consolidation pamphlet An Appeal to Reason; or, How taxes in Brooklyn can be reduced one-half, I will start at the point Where that pamphlet leaves off, viz., the reduction of Brooklyn taxes one-half by the consolidation of the cities. While it is true that the bill (chapter 64, laws 1894) submitting the matter to a popular vote does not contain a clause providing that the taxes of New York and Brooklyn shall be equalized as a condition of the consolidation, yet we all know that New York has never yet annexed any territory Without equalizing the taxes of the annexed territory with its own. This Was the case with the annexation to New York of the Towns of Morrisania, West Farms, and Kingsbridge, in 1874. In each of which cases a popular vote was first taken under a special act (chapter 613, laws which vote resulting in a majority in favor of annexation, was followed the next year by an act of the Legislature absolutely and permanently annexing to New York the towns voting in its favor. See Chapter 329, laws of 1874. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Greater New York and Its Solution The citizens Of New York have many problems, changing in form and degree with each new generation, but the City, which con tains the citizens and outlasts the generations, must ever deal with the one fundamental factor Of its existence; New York is a sea-port. New York's original site was fixed by its harbor its growth has been dependent upon its harbor. Could New York be conceived as losing its harbor, it would straightway dwindle to a second or third-rate city. While no such danger can ever menace New York, it is no less true that any limitation Of its harbor facilities strikes a serious blow at the welfare Of the City - which is to say, at the welfare Of the citizens. We purpose to show that such a limitation now exists, that it is rapidly becoming menacing and that with it are closely associated some Of our most serious civic problems. Book Early Ethnography in the American Arctic

Download or read book Early Ethnography in the American Arctic written by Kirsten Hastrup and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a portrait of early ethnographic work in the American Arctic, with a focus on understanding the mutual constitution of the Inuit and their early ethnographers. It draws mainly on a rich repository of written testimonies from the early twentieth century, the ‘great ethnographic period’ when new scholarly interest in the region took off. Supplementing the movements and observations of whalers, traders, and missionaries, the early chroniclers offered new knowledge of Inuit life. Although their descriptions of the Inuit bear the marks of their time, the texts have left a deep mark on later developments and contributed to a long-lasting view of human life in the Arctic. The chapters show the infiltration of lives and landscapes, of thoughts and materials, of Inuit and ethnographers. The book will be relevant to anthropologists as well as historians, geographers, and others with an interest the Arctic region and Indigenous studies.

Book Reputation and Judicial Tactics

Download or read book Reputation and Judicial Tactics written by Shai Dothan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that national and international courts seek to enhance their reputations through the strategic exercise of judicial power. Courts often cannot enforce their judgments and must rely on reputational sanctions to ensure compliance. One way to do this is for courts to improve their reputation for generating compliance with their judgments. When the court's reputation is increased, parties will be expected to comply with its judgments and the reputational sanction on a party that fails to comply will be higher. This strategy allows national and international courts, which cannot enforce their judgments against states and executives, to improve the likelihood that their judgments will be complied with over time. This book describes the judicial tactics that courts use to shape their judgments in ways that maximize their reputational gains.

Book Books Are Made Out of Books

Download or read book Books Are Made Out of Books written by Michael Lynn Crews and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cormac McCarthy told an interviewer for the New York Times Magazine that "books are made out of books," but he has been famously unwilling to discuss how his own writing draws on the works of other writers. Yet his novels and plays masterfully appropriate and allude to an extensive range of literary works, demonstrating that McCarthy is well aware of literary tradition, respectful of the canon, and deliberately situating himself in a knowing relationship to precursors. The Wittliff Collection at Texas State University acquired McCarthy's literary archive in 2007. In Books Are Made Out of Books, Michael Lynn Crews thoroughly mines the archive to identify nearly 150 writers and thinkers that McCarthy himself references in early drafts, marginalia, notes, and correspondence. Crews organizes the references into chapters devoted to McCarthy's published works, the unpublished screenplay Whales and Men, and McCarthy's correspondence. For each work, Crews identifies the authors, artists, or other cultural figures that McCarthy references; gives the source of the reference in McCarthy's papers; provides context for the reference as it appears in the archives; and explains the significance of the reference to the novel or play that McCarthy was working on. This groundbreaking exploration of McCarthy's literary influences—impossible to undertake before the opening of the archive—vastly expands our understanding of how one of America's foremost authors has engaged with the ideas, images, metaphors, and language of other thinkers and made them his own.

Book American Literature in Transition 1910 1920

Download or read book American Literature in Transition 1910 1920 written by Mark W. Van Wienen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Literature in Transition, 1910–1920 offers provocative new readings of authors whose innovations are recognized as inaugurating Modernism in US letters, including Robert Frost, Willa Cather, T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, H. D., and Marianne Moore. Gathering the voices of both new and established scholars, the volume also reflects the diversity and contradictions of US literature of the 1910s. 'Literature' itself is construed variously, leading to explorations of jazz, the movies, and political writing as well as little magazines, lantern slides, and sports reportage. One section of thematic essays cuts across genre boundaries. Another section oriented to formats drills deeply into the workings of specific media, genres, or forms. Essays on institutions conclude the collection, although a critical mass of contributors throughout explore long-term literary and cultural trends - where political repression, race prejudice, war, and counterrevolution are no less prominent than experimentation, progress, and egalitarianism.
