Book The Referendum in Britain

Download or read book The Referendum in Britain written by Lucy Atkinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union referendum of 23 June 2016 proved to be the trigger for the most prolonged period of political turbulence in the peacetime history of the UK; leading to major policy changes and realignments in the party-political system. This book considers from an historical perspective the democratic device that provided the focus for this upheaval. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, it discusses how the idea of using referendums to resolve major political disputes first came onto the agenda, and why. It considers who advocated it, and in what circumstances. The book describes how referendums eventually came into use from the 1970s onwards, and the different patterns in their deployment in the decades that have followed. Major political figures, from Herbert Henry Asquith and Winston Churchill to Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson and Margaret Thatcher; to Tony Blair, David Cameron, and Boris Johnson form part of the story. Governments have come to power and fallen in the context of demands for referendums or the results they produced. The authors provide detailed accounts of each of the 13 major referendums that have taken place. Referendums took place at UK and sub-UK level. They were held on the position of Northern Ireland (1973) and Scotland (2014) within the UK; on devolution to Wales (1979; 1997; 2011) and Scotland (1979; 1979); on the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement (1998); on devolution to London (1998) and North East England (2004); on the parliamentary voting system (2011); and on UK participation in European integration (1975; 1975). The book provides a constitutional and international perspective, and ask how far the original ideas lying behind the referendum were fulfilled in practice.

Book Governing London

Download or read book Governing London written by Ben Pimlott and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book is the first to take a close historical look at Ken Livingstone s London. It examines the development of London governance from the demise of the Greater London Council to the establishment of the Greater London Authority. The authors investigate the working of Mayor and Assembly, unravel the underlying politics of London and explore policy debates about transport, crime, and economic development. Finally they pose a question of key importance, not just to Londoners, but also to those interested in urban governance throughout the world: to what extent can the creation of new institutions and instruments of government give a major city the sense of being a political community?

Book The State and the Nations

Download or read book The State and the Nations written by Robert Hazell and published by Imprint Academic. This book was released on 2000 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text charts the asymmetry and instability of New Labour's constitutional "settlement" and records changes in public attitudes and national identity. The book covers Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, England, intergovermental regions, Westminster and the London assembly. It covers the first year of devolution in the UK, bringing together the work of a five-year research programme funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The programme comprises 11 research projects that bring out the dynamics of devolution. The book also looks at the tensions which have emerged in Wales and Northern Ireland, the growing demand in Westminster for "English votes on English Laws" and the machinery created by Whitehall to manage devolution from the centre.

Book Turpin and Tomkins British Government and the Constitution

Download or read book Turpin and Tomkins British Government and the Constitution written by Alison L. Young and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 1099 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot has happened to the UK Constitution in the last seven years. We've witnessed the UK's exit from the EU, further devolution to Scotland and Wales, a number of prominent cases by the Supreme Court, two early parliamentary general elections, major governmental defeats and two Prime Ministerial resignations. Alison Young has built on the text of Colin Turpin and Adam Tomkins' earlier edition, keeping their unique historical and contextual approach, whilst bringing the material up to date with more contemporary examples, including references to Brexit, the recent prorogation and Brexit case law, and the Covid-19 pandemic. The book continues to include substantial extracts from parliamentary and other political sources as well as from legislation and case law. It also provides a full yet accessible account of the British constitution at the culmination of a series of dramatic events, on the threshold of possible further constitutional reform.
