Book Tropical Storm Agnes in Greater Harrisburg

Download or read book Tropical Storm Agnes in Greater Harrisburg written by Erik V. Fasick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Storm Agnes, along with the unprecedented flooding which resulted from it, is arguably the most significant event to have transpired in the Harrisburg area in the last 150 years. Over the course of June 21 and June 22, 1972, Agnes drenched the region with more than a foot of rain. As a result, the Susquehanna River rose to record-breaking levels and backed into the already overwhelmed feeding creeks and streams. In Harrisburg, armed National Guardsmen patrolled the vacant streets and set up checkpoints to enforce a curfew and deter looting. Surrounded by floodwaters, row homes near the governor's mansion burned, and firefighters waded through chest-high water as they attempted to reach the blaze. Entire neighborhoods in both Shipoke and Steelton were ultimately lost due to the high waters entering homes. To this day, Agnes continues to serve as the measuring stick by which all storms since have been judged.

Book Greater Harrisburg s Jewish Community

Download or read book Greater Harrisburg s Jewish Community written by Simon J. Bronner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jewish community of Greater Harrisburg became established after 1825, mostly by German immigrants who took up peddling and clothing trades. They were attracted inland from East Coast cities to Harrisburg, the growing upriver hub of trade that became Pennsylvania's state capital in 1812. The community grew to 600 residents by the end of the 19th century and drew attention for a level of civic engagement well beyond that of comparably sized settlements. Immigration from eastern Europe in the early 20th century contributed to a tenfold increase of the Jewish population and a changing ethnic and commercial profile. In the years that followed, the community added an impressive range of institutions and continued to have a reputation for activism. Emerging as the hub of Jewish life in central Pennsylvania, the community produced internationally renowned figures in Jewish affairs, business, and arts.

Book excerpt: A frontier town, crossroads of commerce, state capital, business center, and "City Beautiful," Harrisburg has been and remains all these and more. Its heritage of steel, iron, railroads, canals, business, and government, along with the diverse peoples who helped create it, is collected in this volume, which explores the vast history of this unique Pennsylvania city through the medium of historical photographs. Many images presented in Harrisburg have never before been published and have been carefully selected from the vast collections of the Historical Society of Dauphin County and the Pennsylvania State Archives. From the ever-changing Capitol Complex to the Lochiel Train Wreck, the Civil War, Hurricane Agnes, and Three Mile Island, the images demonstrate the response to these events by Harrisburg's resilient citizens. Changes through technology, transportation, recreation, and lifestyles have also altered the city over the years. Some buildings and sites no longer exist; some are still standing. Most of the images were made by Harrisburg's late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century photographers and are presented here for the education and enjoyment of longtime residents, visitors, and the just plain curious.

Download or read book FAMILIE ALLWEIN written by Duane F. Alwin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part of a series of books about the history of the Allwein family in America, a family descended from an 18th century German immigrant Johannes (Hans) Jacob Allwein and his wife Catharina. This book builds upon the first volume of this series, Familie Allwein – An Early History, which dealt with the Allwein family’s emigration from Germany to America and their settlement in colonial Pennsylvania. This new two-book set represents the second volume of this series, titled Familie Allwein – Journeys in Time and Place, covering Allwein descendants living east of the Allegheny Mountains over the 70-year period from about 1870 through 1940. Part I of this second volume focuses on those families that settled in southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly in Lebanon , Philadelphia and Berks Counties. Part II focuses on those families living in Dauphin, Lancaster, Adams, York and Blair Counties in south central Pennsylvania. Additional future volumes will cover Allwein descendants who moved to western Pennsylvania and those who migrated farther west. Not only is the present volume an update on the families covered in volume 1 of Familie Allwein, it goes beyond the early land, tax and estate records, to include information from marriage and birth records, military records, census records, death records, county atlases and local histories. As in the first volume of this series, the author’s careful documentation of all sources and attention to detail make it possible to reproduce his findings and re-examine his conclusions.
