Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • “An instant American classic and almost certainly the keynote nonfiction book of the American century thus far.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times The Pulitzer Prize–winning, bestselling author of The Warmth of Other Suns examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions—now with a new Afterword by the author. #1 NONFICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR: Time ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, O: The Oprah Magazine, NPR, Bloomberg, The Christian Science Monitor, New York Post, The New York Public Library, Fortune, Smithsonian Magazine, Marie Claire, Slate, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews Winner of the Carl Sandberg Literary Award • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize • National Book Award Longlist • National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist • Dayton Literary Peace Prize Finalist • PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction Finalist • PEN/Jean Stein Book Award Longlist • Kirkus Prize Finalist “As we go about our daily lives, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater, flashlight cast down in the aisles, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power—which groups have it and which do not.” In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched, and beautifully written narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beyond race, class, or other factors, there is a powerful caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and the nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations, including divine will, bloodlines, stigma, and more. Using riveting stories about people—including Martin Luther King, Jr., baseball’s Satchel Paige, a single father and his toddler son, Wilkerson herself, and many others—she shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. She documents how the Nazis studied the racial systems in America to plan their outcasting of the Jews; she discusses why the cruel logic of caste requires that there be a bottom rung for those in the middle to measure themselves against; she writes about the surprising health costs of caste, in depression and life expectancy, and the effects of this hierarchy on our culture and politics. Finally, she points forward to ways America can move beyond the artificial and destructive separations of human divisions, toward hope in our common humanity. Original and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Book City of God

  • Author : Augustine Of Hippo
  • Publisher : Limovia.Net

  • ISBN : 9781783362462

Download or read book City of God written by Augustine Of Hippo and published by Limovia.Net. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents human history as being a conflict between what Augustine calls the City of Man and the City of God, a conflict that is destined to end in victory of the latter. The City of God is marked by people who forgot earthly pleasure to dedicate themselves to the eternal truths of God, now revealed fully in the Christian faith. The City of Man, on the other hand, consists of people who have immersed themselves in the cares and pleasures of the present, passing world. Though The City of God follows Christian theology, the main idea of a conflict between good and evil follows from Augustine's former beliefs in Manichaeanism. A philosophy based on the idea of primordial conflict between light and darkness or goodness and evil. In the case of City of God, it is the City of God (representing light) and the City of Man (representing darkness). Though his book follows an ideology of Manichaeanism, he still distances himself from them by calling them heretics: ..". I say, so just and fit, which, when piously and carefully weighed, terminates all the controversies of those who inquire into the origin of the world, has not been recognized by some heretics ..." Later, when Augustine converted to Christianity he at one point accepted Neo-Platonism. He ends up adding an idea of Neo-Platonism with a Christian idea in The City of God when he says: "As for those who own, indeed, that it was made by God, and yet ascribe to it not a temporal but only a creational beginning ..."

Book The Cities of the Past Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cities of the Past Classic Reprint written by Frances Power Cobbe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cities of the Past Many of us have learned in our day how good it is to turn our steps out of this crowded, dusty Europe, far away to the calm old lands of the East. Here, indeed, is our real life in the great throbbing heart of the world; here in our own England, where the cloud rests over the million-peopled city, fitly as over the battle-field of humanity. Here are our cares, our labours, our soaring, struggling hopes, our keen, sharp joys, our solemn duties. 'tis a poor choice to give up England in our manhood, and abandon for ever all its purpose and its noble strife for the lotos-eater life of the South. At this hour, when every voice and every arm are needed to grapple with error, and want, and sin - when it is not one course only of effort which we would pursue, but a hundred lives of labour we would fain be allowed to live at once, if so we might do somewhat for the Right and the True, - it is, I say, a pitiful thing to quit the field and wander away to dream, and gaze, and ponder; and live, as perhaps man may have earned the right to live in centuries to come, when Giant Despair and Giant Sin are dead, and righteousness and peace shall kiss B. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Annual: For the Year of Our Lord, 1922 The Bible is not alone in its testimony to the value of records, but is joined by the evidence of men and the testimony of nature. So far as known, no tribe of savages, no matter how crude in habit, or low in mental power, has ever yet been found that did not in some way keep records; records of travel, of wars, of battles, of victories. And to the Bible, and the testimony of men, comes the facts of nature. In the sandstone can be found a record of the course of the wind, and the drift of the rain for all the centuries that these forces have played upon it. Scratch the green rind of a sapling, or wantonly twist it in the soil, and the mighty oak will tell of the deed in centuries to come. Cut a gash in a man's head, it may heal over, but the record of the deed remains until decompo sitiou shall entirely destroy the body. And we should keep in mind that the record of sin in the soul is as eternal as God himself. Smite a soul, and the scar remains forever; no coffin, nor grave, can con ceal it; no revolution, no not even the upturning of the physical universe, can obliterate it; no fire, not even the eternal furnaces of hell can burn it out; and when the Book shall be opened, and all men called to give an account for the deeds done in the body, then, if not before, shall the value, the significance, and the spiritual aspect of records be known and appreciated. Our last word is statistics. Perhaps this is the really emphatic word of the subject. Just plain, dry statistics. The word becomes very attractive and intensely interesting, when we recall that in our encyclopedias, statistics is classed as a science, and that as early as 1853 a great international statistical congress was held in Brussels and that since that time international statistical con gresses have met in nearly all the great cities of the old world. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to give even a creditable enumeration of the multifarious topics which may be the subject of statistical inquiries. One encyclopedia which I consulted classified as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The City of God, Vol. 2: De Civitate Dei But here is a question not to be omitted: whether the first death be good to the good? If it be so, how can it be the punishment of sin? For had not our first parents sinned, they had never tasted it: how then can it be good to the upright that can happen only to offenders? And if it happen only to Offenders, it would not be good, for it would not be at all unto the upright: for why should they have punishment that have no guilt? We must confess, then, that had not our first parents sinned, they had not died but sinning, the punishment of death was inflicted upon them and all their posterity: for they should not produce anything but what themselves were, and the greatness of their crime depraved their nature: so that that which was penal in the first man's Offending, was made natural in the birth Of all the rest: for they came not of man, as man came of the dust. The dust was man's material: but man is man's parent. That which is earth is not flesh, though flesh be made of earth: but that which man the father is, man the son is also. For all mankind was in the first man, to be derived from him by the woman, when this couple received their sentence of condemnation. And that which man was made, not in his creation.
