This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his C.S Lewis's introduction to George MacDonald: An Anthology, he speaks highly of MacDonald's theology: "This collection, as I have said, was designed not to revive MacDonald's literary reputation but to spread his religious teaching. Hence most of my extracts are taken from the three volumes of Unspoken Sermons. My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another: and nearly all serious inquirers to whom I have introduced it acknowledge that it has given them great help-sometimes indispensable help toward the very acceptance of the Christian faith. ... I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself. Hence his Christ-like union of tenderness and severity. Nowhere else outside the New Testament have I found terror and comfort so intertwined. ... In making this collection I was discharging a debt of justice. I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master; indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him. But it has not seemed to me that those who have received my books kindly take even now sufficient notice of the affiliation. Honesty drives me to emphasize it." This collection brings together three of George MacDonald's writings: "Unspoken Sermons by George Macdonald Series i, ii, iii in One Volume" - expositions revealing his profound theology. "A Book of Strife in the Form of the Diary of an Old Soul" - a book of poems remarkable for their stirring portrayal of human emotions. And "The Hope of the Gospel" - MacDonald writes about the gospel and about what it means to be a Christian with great wisdom and understanding.

Book The Complete Fairy Tales

Download or read book The Complete Fairy Tales written by George MacDonald and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George MacDonald occupied a major position in the intellectual life of his Victorian contemporaries. This volume brings together all eleven of his shorter fairy stories as well as his essay "The Fantastic Imagination". The subjects are those of traditional fantasy: good and wicked fairies, children embarking on elaborate quests, and journeys into unsettling dreamworlds. Within this familiar imaginative landscape, his children's stories were profoundly experimental, questioning the association of childhood with purity and innocence, and the need to separate fairy tale wonder from adult scepticism and disbelief.

Book excerpt: George MacDonald (10 December 1824 - 18 September 1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. Known particularly for his poignant fairy tales and fantasy novels, George MacDonald inspired many authors. It was C.S. Lewis who wrote that he regarded MacDonald as his "master".Even Mark Twain, who initially disliked MacDonald, became friends with him, and there is some evidence that Twain was influenced by MacDonald.MacDonald wrote "Unspoken Sermons" as a series, with the first series being published in 1867. The second came along almost twenty years later in 1885, followed by the third of the series in 1889.C. S. Lewis was so moved by "Unspoken Sermons" that he wrote the following: "My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another: and nearly all serious inquirers to whom I have introduced it acknowledge that it has given them great help-sometimes indispensable help toward the very acceptance of the Christian faith. I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself. Hence his Christ-like union of tenderness and severity. Nowhere else outside the New Testament have I found terror and comfort so intertwined. I have never concealed the fact that I regarded him as my master; indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him. But it has not seemed to me that those who have received my books kindly take even now sufficient notice of the affiliation. Honesty drives me to emphasize it."The following review, written by a gentleman with a degree in theology, is typical of others who have read this book:"I have read hundreds of books dealing with every aspect of Christianity, religion, theology and philosophy. I also have a degree in theology. In my opinion this book has had more impact on my life then the sum of the others I have read combined!"This Edition includes all three series in one volume.

Book George MacDonald in the Age of Miracles

Download or read book George MacDonald in the Age of Miracles written by Timothy Larsen and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is full of miracles. Yet how do we make sense of them today? And where might we see miracles in our own lives? In this installment of the Hansen Lectureship series, historian and theologian Timothy Larsen considers the legacy of George MacDonald, the Victorian Scottish author and minister who is best known for his pioneering fantasy literature, which influenced authors such as C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesterton, and Madeleine L'Engle. Larsen explores how, throughout his life and writings, MacDonald sought to counteract skepticism, unbelief, naturalism, and materialism and to herald instead the reality of the miraculous, the supernatural, the wondrous, and the realm of the spirit. Based on the annual lecture series hosted at Wheaton College's Marion E. Wade Center, volumes in the Hansen Lectureship Series reflect on the imaginative work and lasting influence of seven British authors: Owen Barfield, G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dorothy L. Sayers, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams.
