We were only too glad to pack up and escape whilst escape was still possible. Even then the water was over the wheels of our train as we left the station. Next day the trains were unable to run at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Republic: A Descriptive, Statistical and Historical View of the States and Territories of the American Union Yes, the Republic is a big country. In England we have no lines of sufficient length, no areas of sufficient width, to ccmvey a just idea of its size. The State of Oregon is bigger than England; California is about the size of Spain; Texas would be larger than France, if France had won the frontier of the German Rhine. If the United States were parted into equal lots, they would make fifty-two kingdoms as large as England, fourteen empires as large as France. Even the grander figure of Europe fails us when we come to measure in its lines such amplitudes as those of the United States. To wit: from Eastport to Brownsville is farther than from London to Tuat, in the Great Sahara; from v'ashington to Astoria is farther than from Brussels to Kare; from New York to San Francisco is farther than from Paris to Bagdad. Such measures seem to carry us away from the sphere of fact into the realms of magic and romance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Imperial Republic Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Imperial Republic Classic Reprint written by James C. Fernald and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Republic "The fateful hours unnoted come; Unfelt the turning tides of doom." The events of 1898 have come upon America as a great surprise. Intervention in Cuba has involved what no man dreamed of. Do what we will, result how it may this is one of the historic eras. Our great nation is being swept along by a world-movement greater than itself. The philosopher must be profoundly impressed by such a crisis, while the devout mind must inquire whether this demand, coming without mans plan or prevision, yet so nearly resistless in its impulsion, be not a call of God. Our continental seclusion was narrowing the circle of our views and of our sympathies. Suddenly we find ourselves a part of the great family of man. Shall we stay with our race? It may be that the outlook could be had without the outreaching - that we might have world-wide interests and sympathies, tho we should have no extra-continental possessions. In fact, this has not been. But with our ships and our sons in the Caribbean and the Philippines, nothing that may happen on the round earth will be a matter of indifference to us evermore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Republic: A New History of the United States, Embracing the Growth and Achievements of Our Country From the Earliest Days of Discovery to the Present Eventful Year The late war with Spain marks a momentous epoch in the progress of our country, whose history, stretching through the centuries of discovery, exploration, settlement, the struggle for independence, foreign and domestic war, lofty achievement in all departments of knowledge and progress, is the most interesting in human annals. It is a record full of instruction and incitement to endeavor, which must fill every American with pride in his birthright, and with gratitude to Him who holds the earth and the sea in the hollow of His hand. The following pages contain a complete, accurate, and graphic history of our country from the first visit of the Northmen, a thousand years ago, to the opening of its new destiny, through the late struggle, resulting in the freeing of Cuba, the wresting of the Philippines, Porto Rico, and the Ladrones from the tyranny of the most cruel of modern nations, and the addition of Hawaii to our domain. The Greater United States, at one bound, assumes its place in the van of nations, and becomes the foremost agent in civilizing and christianizing the world. The task, long committed to England, Germany, France, Russia, and later to Japan, must henceforth be shared with us, whose glowing future gives promise of the crowning achievement of the ages. Download or read book A True Republic Classic Reprint written by Albert Stickney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A True Republic This book is not the work of a scholar. It concerns mat ters which lie outside of my profession, and which I have never studied with thoroughness. To its writing I have been able to give only such time from day to day as could be taken from professional practice. It is not what I wish I might make it; no doubt it has many faults of which I have no knowledge or suspicion. But it is written for a purpose. Its purpose must be the excuse for its existence. The people of the United States have a new and great problem to solve. That they will solve it I make no doubt. The immense growth of party which we have had in this country is something new in history. I do not think its evils have been duly weighed; nor do I think its causes have been carefully studied. It has been too readily assumed that political parties are desirable things in the State. We speak of the abuses of party government. Is it certain that party government now has its uses?
