Book excerpt: Stuck in a rut? Need an attitude adjustment? This inspirational classic from American author Helen Keller is bound to fit the bill. Rendered deaf and blind by scarlet fever in her infancy in a time when the disabled were often shunned and ignored, Keller managed to learn to read, write, and speak, not in only in her native English, but in several other languages, as well. Keller regards optimism as "the faith that leads to achievement," and this treatise lays out her views on making the best of even the direst of circumstances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Optimist and Other Essays I Sat before the open fire last night - the eve of this high day - and half-way dreamed again The Story. Among the resting hills of old Judea were the flocks sleep-folded, and under the trees the shepherds guarded them. The little town of the House of Bread was sleeping, too, save in a stable, where a woman lay, and near her a strong man keeping watch. Away to the west Rome slumbered in her glory, and further on beyond the uncoursed seas the dream and hope of future times lay yet unknown. All was quiet and very peaceful in Bethlehem. Then came the first faint cry of one new-born, and that triumphant burst of song from out the skies, and the Wise Men bending low before the Manger, and then the long line of fruitful years which brings us to the present. The lesson of that first Christmas needs no retelling, for it repeats itself on each successive dawning of the day. The story of how that Manger was the first throne of the King of Kings can be made no more impressive than is its own simple record. Book Optimism Within

Download or read book Optimism Within written by Helen Keller and published by American Roots. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rendered deaf and blind by scarlet fever at the age of a year and a half, Helen Keller--with the help of Anne Sullivan, other teachers, and her own determination--learned to read, write, and speak several languages. Keller became an advocate for people with disabilities and fought for human rights her entire life. In 1903, while attending Radcliffe College -- she was the first deaf blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree -- she wrote "Optimism Within." "If I am happy in spite of my deprivations, if my happiness is so deep that it is a faith, so thoughtful that it becomes a philosophy of life, if, in short, I am an optimist, my testimony to the creed of optimism is worth hearing." This short work is part of Applewood's "American Roots" series, tactile mementos of American passions by some of America's most famous writers and thinkers.

Book The Case for Rational Optimism

Download or read book The Case for Rational Optimism written by Frank S. Robinson and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Case for Rational Optimism tackles a host of challenging subjects in an engaging, accessible, down-to-earth style. It is intellectually serious, ceaselessly intriguing, and devoid of banalities. While other books in this genre tend to be oriented toward self-help, this volume brings evolutionary biology, neuroscience, psychology, sociology, economics, and a keen sense of history to the topic. Robinson begins with three goals: making the case for feeling good about oneself, about humanity in general, and about the global situation. He addresses such seemingly disparate subjects as selfi shness versus altruism, mind and free will, human nature, and issues relating to economics, technology, the environment, and more. Unifying these ideas into a coherent philosophical whole are central concepts: evolution has endowed our species with more good qualities than bad, and why; those qualities, and our use of reason, are the foundations of civilization, and how; and, consistent with our nature, we make a better world by valuing human life therefore enabling others to fl ourish in ways they freely choose. The Case for Rational Optimism argues that the highly challenging conditions confronting early man created a Darwinian selective pressure for cooperation, even altruism, among members of a tribe. Th e author fi nds evidence for this in the way our brains work, and in observable human behavior. He argues against existential despair over the human condition. Even though there probably is no grand celestial design investing life with meaning, he considers this liberating, giving every person the freedom to craft their own meaning. To Robinson, whether sentient beings experience suff ering or joy is the only thing that matters; without emotive highs and lows, the Universe would hardly matter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How lucky we were to have this incredible woman called Helen Keller sharing our planet! Who is better than Helen Keller to write about optimism? Helen Keller became blind when she was just nineteen months old. At the time children who were deaf and blind were simply given up on. But, she went on to prove to this world that anything was possible through her optimistic approach to life! And this book about optimism is from the legend herself. Great Wisdom from Helen Keller from This Book: 1. If happiness is to be so measured, I who cannot hear or see have every reason to sit in a corner with folded hands and weep. 2. Darkness cannot shut me in again. I have had a glimpse of the shore, and can now live by the hope of reaching it. 3. Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it. 4. The world is sown with good; but unless I turn my glad thoughts into practical living and till my own field, I cannot reap a kernel of the good. 5. I never can be argued into hopelessness. Doubt and mistrust are the mere panic of timid imagination, which the steadfast heart will conquer, and the large mind transcend. 6. Work, production, brings life out of chaos, makes the individual a world, an order; and order is optimism. 7. Though the ways in which I can make myself useful are few, the work open to me is endless. The gladdest laborer in the vineyard may be a cripple. 8. The test of all beliefs is their practical effect in life. 9. Thus the optimist believes, attempts, achieves. He stands always in the sunlight. 10. OPTIMISM IS THE FAITH THAT LEADS TO ACHIEVEMENT; NOTHING CAN BE DONE WITHOUT HOPE. Scroll Up and Get Your Copy! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning author Susin Nielsen has written a laugh-out-loud and heartrending novel for fans of Robyn Schneider’s Extraordinary Means and Cammie McGovern’s Say What You Will. Beware: Life ahead. Sixteen-year-old Petula de Wilde is anything but wild. A former crafting fiend with a happy life, Petula shut herself off from the world after a family tragedy. She sees danger in all the ordinary things, like crossing the street, a bug bite, or a germy handshake. She knows: life is out to get you. The worst part of her week is her comically lame mandatory art therapy class with a small group of fellow misfits. Then a new boy, Jacob, appears at school and in her therapy group. He seems so normal and confident, though he has a prosthetic arm; and soon he teams up with Petula on a hilarious project, gradually inspiring her to let go of some of her fears. But as the two grow closer, a hidden truth behind why he’s in the group threatens to derail them, unless Petula takes a huge risk. . . Book Sociology for Optimists

Download or read book Sociology for Optimists written by Mary Holmes and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking away from the idea that sociology only ever elaborates the negative, Sociology for Optimists shows that sociology can provide hope in dealing with social issues through critical approaches that acknowledge the positive. From politics and inequality to nature and faith, Mary Holmes shows how a critical and optimistic sociology can help us think about and understand human experience not just in terms of social problems, but in terms of a human capacity to respond to those problems and strive for social change. With contemporary case studies throughout grounding the theory in the real world, this is the perfect companion/antidote to studying sociology.
