Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-of-its-kind history, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir tells the epic story of how an all-volunteer group founded by persecuted religious outcasts grew into a multimedia powerhouse synonymous with the mainstream and with Mormonism itself. Drawing on decades of work observing and researching the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Michael Hicks examines the personalities, decisions, and controversies that shaped "America's choir." Here is the miraculous story behind the Tabernacle's world-famous acoustics, the anti-Mormonism that greeted early tours, the clashes with Church leaders over repertoire and presentation, the radio-driven boom in popularity, the competing visions of rival conductors, and the Choir's aspiration to be accepted within classical music even as Mormons sought acceptance within American culture at large. Everything from Billboard hits to TV appearances to White House performances paved the way for Mormonism's crossover triumph. Yet, as Hicks shows, such success raised fundamental concerns regarding the Choir's mission, functions, and image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous edition of Plains to the Pacific won a national award in the Spiritual and Inspirational category with IndieReader in 2017. The emergence of this project is due to a fascinating discovery by coauthor James Harman: his great-grandfather Robert Slothower (born in 1871) had written a life-story manuscript. Robert's story represents a challenging life met with great courage. The son and grandson of Civil War soldiers who fought on the Union side, Robert Slothower clearly inherited the strength of a bygone era. Farming, homesteading, and painful lessons of loss are part of Robert Slothower's life. Being separated from the rest of his family for seven years as a boy. Then as a young man, the pain of losing his young wife on the remote Wyoming homestead is overwhelming, but Robert Slothower overcomes adversity and rebuilds his life. A growing relationship with God, along with a new life out West, takes Robert Slothower and his family from the Great Plains to Southwest Washington State, where he finds his second love and is blessed with triplets. Plains to the Pacific, a historical narrative, reminds us that life was not always so easy, but from great trials can emerge great joy.

Book Train for Thought

Download or read book Train for Thought written by Colin Clay and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume in Colin Clay's autobiographical series which tells of the seven years the Clay family enjoyed living in the town of Capreol, a railway community just a short distance from Sudbury, Ontario. Colin had served pastorally and academically in Sudbury when the family arrived from England, but when there came a vacancy at St Alban's parish in Capreol the Archbishop of Algoma appointed Colin as its rector with Colin continuing at Laurentian University but soon adding a position as the Civilian Officiating Clergyman at the Canadian Forces Station at Falconbridge. Capreol provided many opportunties for Colin, Barbara and their four children and Colin was happy with his varied responsibilities. The Clay family continued to enjoy exciting holiday travels across North America along with renewed visits with families in the United Kingdom. Colin was active with Army Cadets as was Barbara with Girl Guides. When the family left for Saskatoon in 1977 Philip and Gill had begun studies at university and college and Alan and Susan were ready for high school. The next volume entitled "It's A Dry Cold" will continue with the Clay's adventures on the Canadian prairies.
