Book The Great Indian Dilemma

Download or read book The Great Indian Dilemma written by Swati Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2017-08 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea to spend your life with a practical stranger chosen by your parents is deemed regressive. Often termed as a marriage of convenience, criticism against this form of marriage is not hard to find. However, these relationships always represent a different kind of love, one that is far removed from the kind fed by novels, movies and now social media. I feel that love in an arranged marriage creeps in slowly, without making any noise and I think that it perhaps is something closest to companionship. Life spent under the protective, watchful eye of her family, something that she realized has ruled her decisions till now, Aara Kazmi, a 27 year old ambitious doctor, is uncomfortable with the fact that the groom is chosen by her parents. Samir Ahmed, 30, an investment banker won't take no for an answer and pursues her till she settles for few months' time to get to know him better before taking a final decision. But for how long will he have to wait when Aara is convinced that Samir is not her choice and tries to find a loophole in this arranged marriage setup. Set in 2006-07 North India, this novel tries to explore the array of emotions that an educated, career oriented Indian girl feels when her parents choose a life partner for her.

Book India Grows At Night

Download or read book India Grows At Night written by Gurcharan Das and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indians wryly admit that ‘India grows at night’. But that is only half the saying, the full expression is: ‘India grows at night... when the government sleeps’, suggesting that the nation may be rising despite the state. India’s is a tale of private success and public failure. Prosperity is, indeed, spreading across the country even as governance failure pervades public life. But how could a nation become one of the world’s fastest-growing economies when it’s governed by a weak, ineffective state? And wouldn’t it be wonderful if India also grew during the day—in other words, if public policy supported private enterprise? What India needs, Gurcharan Das says, is a strong liberal state. Such a state would have the authority to take quick, decisive action, it would have the rule of law to ensure those actions are legitimate and finally, it would be accountable to the people. But achieving this will not be easy, says Das, because India has historically had a weak state and a strong society. About the Author Gurcharan Das is a well known author, commentator and public intellectual. He is the author of the much acclaimed The Difficulty of Being Good, and the international bestseller India Unbound, which has been translated into many languages and filmed by the BBC. His other works include the novel, A Fine Family, a book of essays, The Elephant Paradigm, and an anthology, Three Plays, consisting of Larins Sahib, Mira and 9 Jakhoo Hill. Gurcharan Das writes a regular column for a number of Indian newspapers including the Times of India and occasional guest columns for Newsweek, Wall Street Journal and Foreign Affairs. Gurcharan Das graduated from Harvard University and was CEO of Procter and Gamble India before he took early retirement to become a full time writer. He lives in Delhi.

These volumes explore how the masterpieces of two leading poets among the Croats and Serbs - Ivan Mazuranić (1814-1890) and Petar II Petrović Njegos (1813-1851), who was Prince-Bishop of Montenegro from 1830-1851 - dealt with the Southern Slavs' relationship to Islam in their greatest poetic works, The Death of Smail-agha Čengić and The Mountain Wreath, respectively.

Book Keeping the Jewel in the Crown

Download or read book Keeping the Jewel in the Crown written by Walter Reid and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, when India achieved independence, Britain portrayed the transfer of power as the outcome of decades, even centuries, of responsible planning – the honourable discharge of an historic responsibility. That view has never been seriously challenged in Britain. But this book shows that the official narrative is a travesty of what really happened. Drawing on the documentary evidence – letters, diaries, state papers – Walter Reid reveals how Britain selfishly deceived and prevaricated in order to arrest political progress in India for as long as possible – a shameful passage in British imperial policy which led to tragedy and untold suffering when independence finally became inevitable.

Book excerpt: In this award-winning novel, Tharoor has masterfully recast the two-thousand-year-old epic, The Mahabharata, with fictional but highly recognizable events and characters from twentieth-century Indian politics. Nothing is sacred in this deliciously irreverent, witty, and deeply intelligent retelling of modern Indian history and the ancient Indian epic The Mahabharata. Alternately outrageous and instructive, hilarious and moving, it is a dazzling tapestry of prose and verse that satirically, but also poignantly, chronicles the struggle for Indian freedom and independence.

Book India China Maritime Competition

Download or read book India China Maritime Competition written by Rajesh Basrur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume critically examines the concept of the “security dilemma” and applies it to India–China maritime competition. Though frequently employed in academic discussion and popular commentary on the Sino-Indian relationship, the term has rarely been critically analysed. The volume addresses the gap by examining whether the security dilemma is a useful concept in explaining the naval and foreign policy strategies of India and China. China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its expansive engagement in the Indian Ocean Region have resulted in India significantly scaling up investment in its navy, adding ships, naval aircraft and submarines. This volume investigates how the rivalry is playing out in different sub-regions of the Indian Ocean, and the responses of other powers, notably the United States and prominent Southeast Asian states. Their reactions to the Sino-Indian rivalry are an underexplored topic and the chapters in this book reveal how they selectively use that rivalry while trying to steer clear of making definite choices. The book concludes with recommendations on mitigating the security dilemma. This work will be of great interest to students of strategic studies, international relations, maritime security, and Asian politics.
