Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America, as in Britain, the Victorian era enjoyed a long life, stretching from the 1830s to the 1910s. It marked the transition from a pre-modern to a modern way of life. Ellen Harmon White's life (1827-1915) spanned those years and then some, but the last three months of a single year, 1844, served as the pivot for everything else. When the Lord failed to return on October 22, as she and other followers of William Miller had predicted, White did not lose heart. Fired by a vision she experienced, White played the principal role in transforming a remnant minority of Millerites into the sturdy sect that soon came to be known as the Seventh-day Adventists. She and a small group of fellow believers emphasized a Saturday Sabbath and an imminent Advent. Today that flourishing denomination posts eighteen million adherents globally and one of the largest education, hospital, publishing, and missionary outreach programs in the world. Over the course of her life White generated 70,000 manuscript pages and letters, and produced 40 books that have enjoyed extremely wide circulation. She ranks as one of the most gifted and influential religious leaders in American history and this volume tells her story in a new and remarkably informative way. Some of the contributors identify with the Adventist tradition, some with other Christian denominations, and some with no religious tradition at all. Their essays call for White to be seen as a significant figure in American religious history and for her to be understood within the context of her times.

Book The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels and Satan and His Angels

Download or read book The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels and Satan and His Angels written by Ellen G. White and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2011 Reprint of 1858 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. In Seventh-day Adventist theology the "Great Controversy" theme refers to the cosmic battle between Jesus Christ and Satan, and also played out on earth. The concept is derived from many visions White claimed to have received, scriptural references, and is delineated in the book "The Great Controversy," first published in 1858, by Ellen G. White, a co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The concept is important in Adventist theology because it provides an understanding of the origin of evil, and of the eventual destruction of evil and the restoration of God's original purpose for this world. It constitutes belief number 8 of the church's 28 Fundamentals. Specifically, the belief holds that all humanity is now involved in a great controversy between Christ and Satan regarding the character of God, His law, and His sovereignty over the universe. This conflict originated in heaven when a created being, endowed with freedom of choice, in self-exaltation became Satan, God's adversary. He led into rebellion a portion of the angels. He introduced the spirit of rebellion into this world when he led Adam and Eve into sin. This human sin resulted in the distortion of the image of God in humanity, the disordering of the created world, and its eventual devastation at the time of the worldwide flood. Observed by the whole creation, this world became the arena of the universal conflict, out of which the God of love will ultimately be vindicated. To assist His people in this controversy, Christ sends the Holy Spirit and the loyal angels to guide, protect, and sustain them in the way of salvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the most wonderful and intensely interesting history that has ever been written of the great confilct between Christianity and the Powers of Darkness. The period of history covered is one of the deepest interest to all classes of readers. Beginning with our Lord's great prophecy given while viewing Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, in which He outlines the history of the whole dispensation, it sketches the fulfillment. It calls our attention to the bitter persecutions of the Christians in the first centuries, and notes the rise and growth of the Papacy. Considerable space is given to the life, work, and infuence of later reformers and great religious leaders, and this is followed by chapters treating upon The Orgin of Evil, The Agency of Evil Spirits, The Snares of Satan, and the Judgment. The closing chapters give a vivid picture of the warfare of the church, her final redemption, and vividly describe the triumph of the people of God, the destruction of Satan and all his followers, and the renewing of the earth, which ends the awful controversy between the Son og God and the Powers of Darkness. - 1. Book The Great Second Advent Movement

Download or read book The Great Second Advent Movement written by John Norton Loughborough and published by . This book was released on 1909 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are already many useful books in the hands of the people, and my apology for adding another to the list, is that in these pages I state many things concerning Adventist, and especially Seventh-day Adventist, which have not heretofore been brought in this form before the people. Besides this, many who espoused the cause in later years, and who have not witnessed the things mentioned, have earnestly requested a narration of these facts and experiences from those earlier in the work. Having been familiar with the advent movement in 1843 and 1844, and having, since Jane. 2, 1849 proclaimed the doctrine, first as an Adventist, I esteem it a pleasure to "speak the things i have seen and heard."--Chapter I-- Introductory. Chapter II-- The Plan of Salvation Unfolded. Chapter III-- The Coming of the Promised Seed. Chapter IV-- The Time of the End. Chapter V-- The Second Advent Message. Chapter VI-- The Message and the Messangers. Chapter VII-- The Rapid Advancement of the Message. Chapter VIII- The Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Chapter IX-- The Tarrying Time. Chapter X-- The Midnight Cry. Chapter XI --The Second Angel's Message. Chapter XII--The Disappointment--The Bitter Book. Chapter XIII--Tokens of Divine Guidance. Chapter XIV--The Shut Door. Chapter XV-- Increasing Light and Greater Wonders. Chapter XVI--The Third Angel's Message. ChapterXVII--Truth Advanced Under Difficulties. Chapter XVIII--Providence of God in the Publishing Work. Chapter XIX-- "By Their Fruits Ve Shall Know Them". Chapter XX-- Sacrifices in the Early Work. Chapter XXI--The Guiding Hand in the Work. Chapter XXII-Organization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians have been ever prompted to the higher life by the spirit of God. All who are justified freely by His grace will walk no more after the lusts of flesh. Why is this so? The Spirit that kept Jesus is now in them. They now possess an unselfish spirit through faith in the merits of Christ and seek to separate from sin and self-will. He who gave His life knows how to impart it to us. Many realize justification by faith must involve more than cleansing of a record. Surely, the power to justify a lost sinenr must also contain power to transform the life. A heart yearning to be like Jesus must be part of the gospel. Does the word of God say anything about purging the conscience, freedom from condemnation of the law, victory over sin, death, and devil? Yes, much so. In only one way does the Biblical experience come - the precious blood of Christ applied. The power that avails in heaven with the Father, has conquered the devil, justifies the sinner, and gives victory in the life, is the BLOOD. It is hoped repetition of the instruction concerning the blood will give comfort and direction to His saints.
