Book CHURCHES AND CATHEDRALS 1700 Years of the Most Beautiful Architecture

Download or read book CHURCHES AND CATHEDRALS 1700 Years of the Most Beautiful Architecture written by and published by Parragon Pubishing India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 1700 years, cathedrals have embodied the glory of God while serving as a physical representation of the power of the church and its leaders. The image of these utterly magnificent buildings with their high quality furnishings and works of art has proved so enduring that expressions such as a "sports cathedral" to describe a stadium or "cathedral of money" for a stock exchange are freely used today. By definition, a cathedral is the seat of a bishop, literally his kathedra, or throne. And as such it is worthy of the very best that the combination of design, décor and fine materials can produce. The big European cathedrals set the standard for all that came after them. The Episcopal churches of northern France gave birth to Gothic architecture, just as the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela had served as a model for the Romanesque style, and Florence Cathedral brought the Renaissance to the very threshold of the modern age. Additional important churches are included along with this panorama of cathedral architecture to provide a more comprehensive overview of sacred architecture. In total 240 magnificent buildings are represented here in outstanding photographs and detailed text, providing a impressive survey of the history of sacred Christian architecture from the medieval period to modern times.

Book Cathedrals

Download or read book Cathedrals written by and published by . This book was released on 1926 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The architecture of cathedrals, basilicas and abbey churches is the architecture of those church buildings which are usually of large size, including most cathedrals, and follow one of several branching traditions of form, function and style that stem initially from Early Christian traditions of the Roman Empire. Cathedrals in particular, as well as many abbey churches and basilicas, have certain complex structural forms that are found less often in parish churches. They also tend to display a higher level of contemporary architectural style and the work of accomplished craftsmen, and occupy a status both ecclesiastical and social that an ordinary parish church does not have. Such a cathedral or great church is generally one of the finest buildings within its region and is a focus of local pride. Many cathedrals and basilicas, and a number of abbey churches are among the most renowned works of architecture on the planet. The earliest large churches date from the Roman Empire. As Christianity and the construction of churches and cathedral spread throughout the world, their manner of building was dependent upon local materials and local techniques. Different styles of architecture developed and their fashion spread, carried by the establishment of monastic orders, by the posting of bishops from one region to another and by the travelling of master stonemasons who served as architects. The styles of the great church buildings are successively known as Early Christian, Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, various Revival styles of the late 18th to early 20th centuries and Modern. Overlaid on each of the academic styles are the regional characteristics. Some of these characteristics are so typical of a particular country or region that they appear, regardless of style, in the architecture of churches designed many centuries apart.

Book excerpt: This volume is a study of the people who commissioned, designed, and built the great cathedrals of Europe, from the eleventh through the sixteenth centuries.
