Book The Great Boston Fire of 1872

Download or read book The Great Boston Fire of 1872 written by Anthony Mitchell Sammarco and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few events can be said to have changed the face of Boston forever. Eventually destroying 775 buildings and causing millions of dollars in damage to the commercial section that we now know as Boston's business district, the Great Boston Fire of 1872 was a spectacular conflagration that destroyed "old Boston" and allowed a phoenix to arise from the ashes. This exciting new pictorial history brings to life the drama that began one Saturday evening in 1872 when a fire started in an empty hoop-skirt factory on the corner of Summer and Kingston Streets. At the time, Boston was in the throes of a epizootic disease that caused all horses in the area to be ill. This caused a virtual shutdown of transportation and city services and delayed the fire department's response to calls for help. By the time the breathless firemen arrived, the fire had already consumed the granite five-story factory and burst through the mansard roof, which acted as a flue and spread the fire. Within an hour, much of Summer Street was engulfed in flames and firemen from near and far were being summoned to combat the spread of the deadly blaze. By midnight, the fire had spread through Summer Street to Arch Street and was attacking Winthrop Square. Old Trinity Church, at the corner of Summer and Hawley Streets, had given itself up to the flames.

Book excerpt: A lively history of Boston’s emergence as a world-class city—home to the likes of Frederick Douglass and Alexander Graham Bell—by a beloved Bostonian historian “It’s been quite a while since I’ve read anything—fiction or nonfiction—so enthralling.”—Dennis Lehane, author of Mystic River and Shutter Island Once upon a time, “Boston Town” was an insulated New England township. But the community was destined for greatness. Between 1850 and 1900, Boston underwent a stunning metamorphosis to emerge as one of the world’s great metropolises—one that achieved national and international prominence in politics, medicine, education, science, social activism, literature, commerce, and transportation. Long before the frustrations of our modern era, in which the notion of accomplishing great things often appears overwhelming or even impossible, Boston distinguished itself in the last half of the nineteenth century by proving it could tackle and overcome the most arduous of challenges and obstacles with repeated—and often resounding—success, becoming a city of vision and daring. In A City So Grand, Stephen Puleo chronicles this remarkable period in Boston’s history, in his trademark page-turning style. Our journey begins with the ferocity of the abolitionist movement of the 1850s and ends with the glorious opening of America’s first subway station, in 1897. In between we witness the thirty-five-year engineering and city-planning feat of the Back Bay project, Boston’s explosion in size through immigration and annexation, the devastating Great Fire of 1872 and subsequent rebuilding of downtown, and Alexander Graham Bell’s first telephone utterance in 1876 from his lab at Exeter Place. These lively stories and many more paint an extraordinary portrait of a half century of progress, leadership, and influence that turned a New England town into a world-class city, giving us the Boston we know today.

Book excerpt: At once a fascinating narrative and a visual delight, Lost Boston brings the city's past to life. This updated edition includes a new section illustrating the latest gains and losses in the struggle to preserve Boston 's architectural heritage. With an engaging text and more than 350 seldom-seen photographs and prints, Lost Boston offers a chance to see the city as it once was, revealing architectural gems lost long ago. An eminently readable history of the city's physical development, the book also makes an eloquent appeal for its preservation. Jane Holtz Kay traces the evolution of Boston from the barren, swampy peninsula of colonial times to the booming metropolis of today. In the process, she creates a family album for the city, infusing the text with the flavor and energy that makes Boston distinct. Amid the grand landmarks she finds the telling details of city life: the neon signs, bygone amusement parks, storefronts, and windows plastered with images of campaigning politicians-sights common in their time but even more meaningful in their absence today. Kay also brings to life the people who created Boston-architects like Charles Bulfinch and H. H. Richardson, landscape architect and master park-maker Frederick Law Olmsted, and such colorful political figures as Mayors John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald and James Michael Curley. The new epilogue brings Boston's story to the end of the twentieth century, showing elements of the city's architecture that were lost in recent years as well as those that were saved and others threatened as the city continues to evolve.

Download or read book Boston Fire in the Church written by Brandon Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does a nearly forgotten fire of old have to do with the health and vitality of your church? The answer will surprise you! The Great Boston Fire of 1872, which remains the largest fire in Boston's history, is a unique and incredibly intriguing story that offers so many profound insights, messages, and warnings to those willing to delve into the details of the event. In fact, examining some of those very details is one of the purposes of this book, and yet its primary focus regards something far greater than merely bringing to light commonly overlooked pieces of historical information. This book's utmost purpose and mission is to comparatively use information about the great fire in a discussion about figurative fires of negativity (gossip, bickering, power wars, selfishness, burn out, and more) that occur within modern churches, and the book's emphasis regards how you and your church can go about effectively combating these fires. The hope behind this book is that God would allow the story of the great fire to get your attention, to be paralleled with various principles within his Word, and to bring you to a better understanding of how to prevent and extinguish the church-crippling fires of negativity that our arsonist-enemy Satan is hoping will destroy your church! The learning will be interesting and challenging, but it will also be transforming and empowering for the life of your church. If you're determined to let God's Word dictate how you deal with fires of negativity, you can go ahead and say, "There will be no Boston fire in MY church!" As you and others begin applying the biblical principles identified within this book, your church will make sure of it. Let the fireproofing begin! A nine-session study guide is included in the appendix of this book, and it designed to be used within a Sunday school or cell group setting. Each session's material should last approximately 35-45 minutes within a talkative group, and the nine sessions correspond with the nine chapters of the book, which include the introduction and the conclusion.
