Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off The Map is a collection of fifty-five outdoor adventures that take place along the rougher and more precarious edges of our country's natural splendor. Within these stories, the author engages in ill-advised confrontations with the bears of Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness, the mosquitoes of Yellowstone, and the voracious marmots of the San Juan Mountains. Driven by an unhealthy obsession with cliffs and mountaintops, the author also ventures into such serene and surreal landscapes as the redrock ravines of Utah, the abandoned gold mines of Colorado, the icefields of Iceland, the volcanic peaks of the Cascades, the depths of the Grand Canyon, and the lightning-scarred summits of the Southern Rockies. If you enjoy tales of haunted hotels and hot springs, hypothermia and heat exhaustion, as well as snapshots of the most scenic locations this continent has to offer, Off The Map will satisfy your inquisitive and adventurous spirit. Originally printed in New York's Evening Sun newspaper and collected here for the first time.

This is perfectly fine, of course, but many have completely lost touch with nature. Meanwhile, millions of acres of pristine wilderness are waiting to be enjoyed. Wildering: Anyone's Guide to Enjoying the American Wilderness can help reconnect people with the natural world-even those who have never set foot in the woods. Author Mick Tune has the answers to all the questions you're afraid to ask, with information about equipment, packing, permitting, basic survival, and much more. You don't have to be in incredible shape or spend a fortune on equipment to enjoy the outdoors-all you need is a pair of legs and a spirit of adventure. Mick Tune wasn't a Boy Scout, nor is he a professional mountain man-but he loves the wilderness, and he's learned a lot over three decades of outdoor adventures. Tune is living proof that nature exists for everyone's enjoyment; you just need the courage to take that first step.

Download or read book American Wilderness Alaska and the National Parks 1865 1890 written by Wesley Windsor and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska—America's forty-ninth state—has a long and rich history. Beginning with the Native people who first made their homes there, the inhabitants have benefited from Alaska's bountiful resources. Alaska's gold, fish, and lumber have all contributed to America's economy. Some people wonder, however, if Alaska's greatest natural resource might be her untouched wilderness areas. Our National Parks are another one of our great resources. How should land be used? To whom does it belong? Who should decide? Questions like these have played a major role in shaping the United States—and they continue to do so today. America's National Parks are just one answer to these questions.
