Download or read book Falling Upwards written by Richard Holmes and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Kirkus Best Books of the Year (2013)** **Time Magazine 10 Top Nonfiction Books of 2013** **The New Republic Best Books of 2013** In this heart-lifting chronicle, Richard Holmes, author of the best-selling The Age of Wonder, follows the pioneer generation of balloon aeronauts, the daring and enigmatic men and women who risked their lives to take to the air (or fall into the sky). Why they did it, what their contemporaries thought of them, and how their flights revealed the secrets of our planet is a compelling adventure that only Holmes could tell. His accounts of the early Anglo-French balloon rivalries, the crazy firework flights of the beautiful Sophie Blanchard, the long-distance voyages of the American entrepreneur John Wise and French photographer Felix Nadar are dramatic and exhilarating. Holmes documents as well the balloons used to observe the horrors of modern battle during the Civil War (including a flight taken by George Armstrong Custer); the legendary tale of at least sixty-seven manned balloons that escaped from Paris (the first successful civilian airlift in history) during the Prussian siege of 1870-71; the high-altitude exploits of James Glaisher (who rose) seven miles above the earth without oxygen, helping to establish the new science of meteorology); and how Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, and Jules Verne felt the imaginative impact of flight and allowed it to soar in their work. A seamless fusion of history, art, science, biography, and the metaphysics of flights, Falling Upwards explores the interplay between technology and imagination. And through the strange allure of these great balloonists, it offers a masterly portrait of human endeavor, recklessness, and vision. (With 24 pages of color illustrations, and black-and-white illustrations throughout.)

Book A Grandstand Seat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eileen Lebow
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 1998-08-30
  • ISBN : 1567508316
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book A Grandstand Seat written by Eileen Lebow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-08-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The little-known American Balloon Service worked in combat to help direct artillery fire more accurately and provide essential intelligence on enemy troop movements during World War I. German use of observation balloons to direct artillery fire in August of 1914 forced the Allies to develop a similar force. With the U.S. entry into the war in 1917, the balloon service, starting from scratch, evolved into an effective, disciplined fighting unit, whose achievements are unfortunately overshadowed by those of the flying aces. Reminiscences from balloon veterans form the basis of this book, the first to picture life as a gasbagger in the three major American engagements of the war. Amazingly, life as an observer suspended in a wicker basket under an elephantine hydrogen balloon proved less deadly than piloting an airplane. From his grandstand seat, the observer kept tabs on the war below him and telephoned vital information to headquarters command. These reports were often the only accurate intelligence available. Balloonists remember the war as a great adventure, one which many of them lived to tell about.

Book Sky Rider

Download or read book Sky Rider written by Gary B. Fogel and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a reputation as the hot-air balloon capital of the world and the home of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta®, the skies of the southwestern desert city of Albuquerque frequently showcase the magic and adventure of ballooning. This legacy links back to the 1880s and a man by the name of Park Van Tassel. Through his pioneering flight, Van Tassel not only opened the skies to future generations across New Mexico, but he also opened minds to the possibility of manned flight throughout the American West. A charismatic, P. T. Barnum-like showman, Van Tassel rose from obscurity to introduce the new science of ballooning and parachuting throughout the West. Van Tassel toured extensively--from California to Utah, Colorado, and Louisiana and later embarking on an international journey that took him to Hawaii, Australia, Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and beyond. Sky Rider weaves together the many threads of Van Tassel's extraordinary life journey, situating him at last in his rightful place among the prominent aerial exhibitionists of his time.

Book The Man with the Big Red Balloon

Book excerpt: Sharp and enchanting, Garrett Baldwin's The Man with the Big Red Balloon is a romping story of when good intentions meet impossible greed and a biting political satire of today's political world. Apple Valley is a pristine, bucolic wonderland shining with the promise of prosperity. Life is as simple as Josie's prized apple pies sold at the town's very first bakery. Farmers harvest plentiful apples, businesses swing open their doors, and life flourishes. Apple Valley is a growing economic powerhouse built on the ideals of productivity, education, and accountability. But one morning, the town's founder fails to rise again, and the town must continue on without him. Determined to uphold his legacy, the town pushes forward trading silver, selling wares, and holding each other accountable in a place where freedom is championed. Here, harvests are plentiful and businesses prosper. But when Arlo Greydon arrives on the heels of the town's economic boom, he doesn't see a fruitful world. All Arlo he sees is excess. Fairness--Arlo argues--is what Apple Valley needs most. The power hungry idealist believes that each farmer, each business owner, each person should have the same amount of food and the same amount of silver. To help him sell his brilliant vision of fairness, he invites a mysterious, charismatic stranger--only known as "the Man"--to help him. And when the Man stokes fear with news of a fresh crisis--that the town is running out of air--the people submit to Arlo's solution to increase taxes and government control of their lives. . . all for the children, of course. "A libertarian's laugh out loud riot meets a free-market romp" Jeff Joseph, Modern Trader
