Download or read book The Monkey Wrench Gang written by Edward Abbey and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A motley crew of saboteurs wreaks havoc on the corporations destroying America’s Western wilderness in this “wildly funny, infinitely wise” classic (The Houston Chronicle). When George Washington Hayduke III returns home from war in the jungles of Southeast Asia, he finds the unspoiled West he once knew has been transformed. The pristine lands and waterways are being strip mined, dammed up, and paved over by greedy government hacks and their corrupt corporate coconspirators. And the manic, beer-guzzling, rabidly antisocial ex-Green Beret isn’t just getting mad. Hayduke plans to get even. Together with a radical feminist from the Bronx; a wealthy, billboard-torching libertarian MD; and a disgraced Mormon polygamist, Hayduke’s ready to stick it to the Man in the most creative ways imaginable. By the time they’re done, there won’t be a bridge left standing, a dam unblown, or a bulldozer unmolested from Arizona to Utah. Edward Abbey’s most popular novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang is an outrageous romp with ultra-serious undertones that is as relevant today as it was in the early days of the environmental movement. The author who Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove) once dubbed “The Thoreau of the American West” has written a true comedic classic with brains, heart, and soul that more than justifies the call from the Los Angeles Times Book Review that we should all “praise the earth for Edward Abbey!” “Mixes comedy and chaos with enough chase sequences to leave you hungering for more.”—The San Francisco Chronicle
Download or read book Grease Monkey written by Steven G. Percifield and published by . This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With slavery, its bastard child racism, and the Ku Klux Klan all looming large in the rear-view mirror, "Grease Monkey" is a story of interracial friendship and auto racing partnership in a state dominated by an emerging automobile industry... and the Klan. Based upon the true life of Herschel B. Gulley and his friend and partner in their auto racing enterprise, the book traces Gulley's life from a twelve-year old farm head-of-household, to the dirt tracks of America, to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His partner's history and what made him the man he was, is traced from Central Africa, to slavery, to freedom in Indiana, to WW I France, and back to Indianapolis where his claims to racing fame were established and his abilities as both a driver and mechanic were proven. Indiana's arguable role as the original auto manufacturing capitol of the world, Chevrolet Manufacturing Company's Indianapolis roots, the reasons for the birth of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Ford-Chevy racing connection and the birth of the Colored Speedway Association are highlighted by interaction with Louis Chevrolet, Henry Ford, Wilbur Shaw and Charlie Wiggins. Climaxing with a duel-to-the-death on a Hoosier dirt track, the book is a must-read for anyone with interests in autos, auto racing, Indiana history or social history in America.

Book excerpt: The town of Preston had never known serious crime, but that all changed on a sweltering July morning when Janine Compton was murdered. She was the daughter of the prominent Compton family, and with her death came heavy pressure to find her killer. But was Aaron Tully, the likeable but inexperienced town cop, capable of taking on such an investigation? His pride told him that he was; the townsfolk believed otherwise. But Tullys investigative abilities soon silenced all doubters. Jordan Finnie, the victims onetime lover, was arrested and charged with the murder. With a mountain of evidence to back up the murder charge, Tully could then sit back and wait for the upcoming trial to commence. He had no doubt that it would be a mere formality. However, five months later a man walked into his office with a nuisance complaint. While following up on the complaint, Tully stumbled onto a new piece of evidence, evidence which basically eliminated Finnie as the killer. Now, with the shame of his inept police work hanging over his head, his policing contract with the town about to run out, the question became this: was there enough time left to start over again?

Ground zero for the humongous chasm in the earth is the old funeral parlor owned by the family of the local sheriff, Jake Trapper. And, amazingly, not so coincidentally, the head of the giant spider woman thing bears a striking resemblance to his long lost cousin, Sara, who vanished in her thirteenth summer, some fifteen years prior, off the face of the planet. Jake Trapper must deal with his own recurring nightmares regarding his missing cousin; conquer his fear of spiders, while all the while attempting to save his relationship with the fiery woman he loves, Ellie. Attempting to mirror the world we live in, my tale explores, depicts, includes: gay, heterosexual, LGBT, even cross-species extraterrestrial characters- all of course, intended in good fun.

This starts Oakers on a promising new career, with a hit radio program, but when two badly decomposed corpses are found in the woods at Hakers Creek, identified as his wife, Peggy, and daughter, Beth, circumstantial evidence points directly to him. He is brought to trial for the double murders. Feeling guilty and remorseful, he is unable to present a defense because he was drunk out of his mind the night of their deaths. A frightening event occurs during his trial, and the trial itself takes a bizarre twist, but the story doesnt reach its true and surprising climax until many years later, when Oakers is serving his country during World War II.
Download or read book Sentimental Journey A True Story written by Nancy Carroll-Johnson and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentimental Journey begins in the 1950s in New York City, teeming with European immigrants who occupy sought-after apartments in a state of disrepair and ready to crumble around them. Author Nancy Carroll-Johnson learns of her parents’ plans to relocate to sunny California for a better life at the tender age of eleven. In this memoir, she offers a portrayal of a Scots-Irish family of six jammed into a 1952 Plymouth, pulling a U-Haul trailer carrying all their belongings across the United States. Born with a congenital heart defect, having undergone cutting-edge, life-saving open heart surgery at age three, the story of her progressive medical intervention appears in multiple prominent newspapers. Despite obvious contraindications, she has no choice but to breathe in the plumes of smoke exhaled as a result of her parents’ Philip Morris habit, along with her brother and two sisters, as they make their way to parts unknown. Through much laughter and tears, and more than one cross-country trip, the Carroll family arrives and stays put on the West Coast. At age sixteen, Nancy meets Drew, and they live on love for the rest of their lives. Sentimental Journey shares an honest and touching story of Carroll-Johnson’s journey through time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales Out of Church is a collection of short stories told by an overimaginative Catholic priest. He is Father Cornelius Daugherty, called “Father Connie” by his friends. It’s the Christmas season. When most people are scurrying from stores and banks and picking up relatives at airports and train stations, Father Connie is daydreaming about talking sandwiches, gourmet meals, and fighting dragons on a train. However, as a priest, Father Connie is often dazed by the true-to-life stories of people just trying to live their lives. He encounters the comedy of courting today and a father’s frustration in raising a teenage daughter. Finally, Tales Out of Church is a love story that begins in the El Salvador insurgency and persists in a forbidden courtship that lasts for decades. In the last chapter of the book, Father Cornelius Daugherty tells a story at the Christmas morning mass about a man who builds a machine to get to heaven, only to be reminded that Jesus Christ is the only way.
