Book The Graying of Torrance

Download or read book The Graying of Torrance written by James Michael Weyant and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first phase of the study was an 18-month analysis of demographic trends among the aged (65 years old and older) in Torrance. This shows a steady decline in the public school enrollment and an increase in the average age of the local population. Phase two of the study involved the development of questionnaires designed to ascertain needs, concerns, and interests of the police and their clientele in the elderly age group. Phase three reviewed selected programs in various parts of the country that have addressed police service to the elderly. The study projects an increase in the number of elderly offenders and victims as well as in the fear of crime. Recommendations designed to improve police services to an older population in Torrance focus on changes in organization and deployment within the police department, the development of more comprehensive officer training in dealing with the elderly, and the development of certain senior volunteer programs within the department.

By studying and analyzing the ongoing struggles of other nations in their attempts to cope with growing populations of frail elderly, readers in the U.S. can expand the parameters of their own national debate on the subject. The Graying of the World shows the political, economic, and social context in which decisions on elder-care are based and evaluates how successful various countries'programs have been. Chapters outline alternative approaches taken by disparate types of national systems, highlighting unique and creative solutions to provide useful information on new and alternative ways to respond to personal and public issues related to elder-care. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could a work of revelation be justified as a viable theological project today, especially in light of some modern sceptics questioning its validity as a doctrinal discipline? Engaging with the work of theologians such as Karl Barth, Paul Tillich and Colin Gunton, Chung explores and justifies revelation and mediation in the theology of T.F.Torrance and argues that Torrance's distinctiveness is able to contribute significantly to current debate and bring a fresh perspective to the theological landscape.

Memories of a vicious attack and his own bloodied, thirteen- year- old body lying in his mother's arms have haunted him into his twenties. As a result, he's convinced himself that he's content using his amazing strength and durability to earn a living as a human probe at the Sapien Rex Corporation. But the relatively normal life he's carved out for himself is shattered when archenemy Isaiah Stone murders his parents in cold blood and sends hero-killing super assassins to wipe out the rest of his family. From that moment. There the team discovers that the world- ending machinery they've been fighting desperately to keep out of Stone's hands is a part of their own legacy, sending them hurtling towards a final confrontation in the Pacific with their parents' killer.

Download or read book Gray Panthers written by Roger Sanjek and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1970, a sixty-five-year-old Philadelphian named Maggie Kuhn began vocally opposing the notion of mandatory retirement. Taking inspiration from the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, Kuhn and her cohorts created an activist organization that quickly gained momentum as the Gray Panthers. After receiving national publicity for her efforts—she even appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson—she gained thousands of supporters, young and old. Their cause expanded to include universal health care, nursing home reform, affordable and accessible housing, defense of Social Security, and elimination of nuclear weapons. Gray Panthers traces the roots of Maggie Kuhn's social justice agenda to her years as a YWCA and Presbyterian Church staff member. It tells the nearly forty-year story of the intergenerational grassroots movement that Kuhn founded and its scores of local groups. During the 1980s, more than one hundred chapters were tackling local and national issues. By the 1990s the ranks of older members were thinning and most young members had departed, many to pursue careers in public service. But despite its challenges, including Kuhn's death in 1995, the movement continues today. Roger Sanjek examines Gray Panther activism over four decades. Here the inner workings and dynamics of the movement emerge: the development of network leadership, local projects and tactics, conflict with the national office, and the intergenerational political ties that made the group unique among contemporary activist groups. Part ethnography, part history, part memoir, Gray Panthers draws on archives and interviews as well as the author's thirty years of personal involvement. With the impending retirement of the baby boomers, Sanjek's book will surely inform the debates and discussions to follow: on retirement, health care, and many other aspects of aging in a society that has long valued youth above all.

Book excerpt: In England in the late 1920s, The Honourable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher, on a convalescent trip to the countryside, goes to visit three old school friends in the area. The three, all unmarried, have recently bought a house together. They are a part of the generation of "superfluous women"—brought up expecting marriage and a family, but left without any prospects after more than 700,000 British men were killed in the Great War. Daisy and her husband Alec—Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher, of Scotland Yard —go for a Sunday lunch with Daisy's friends, where one of the women mentions a wine cellar below their house, which remains curiously locked, no key to be found. Alec offers to pick the lock, but when he opens the door, what greets them is not a cache of wine, but the stench of a long-dead body. And with that, what was a pleasant Sunday lunch has taken an unexpected turn. Now Daisy's three friends are the most obvious suspects in a murder and her husband Alec is a witness, so he can't officially take over the investigation. So before the local detective, Superintendent Underwood, can officially bring charges against her friends, Daisy is determined to use all her resources (Alec) and skills to solve the mystery behind this perplexing locked-room crime.

Book excerpt: National Bestseller A supernatural force—set in motion a century ago—threatens to devastate New York City in this “terrific horror/suspense/disaster novel” that “grips from the first page” (Stephen King, #1 New York Times bestselling author). Far upstate, in New York’s ancient forests, a drowned village lays beneath the dark, still waters of the Chilewaukee reservoir. Early in the 20th century, the town was destroyed for the greater good: bringing water to the millions living downstate. Or at least that’s what the politicians from Manhattan insisted at the time. The local families, settled there since America’s founding, were forced from their land, but some didn’t leave… Now, a century later, the repercussions of human arrogance are finally making themselves known. An inspector assigned to oversee the dam, dangerously neglected for decades, witnesses something inexplicable. It turns out that more than the village was left behind in the waters of the Chill when it was abandoned. A dark prophecy remained, too, and the time has come for it to be fulfilled—for sacrifices must be made. And as the dark waters begin to inexorably rise, the demand for a fresh sacrifice emerges from the deep… “A must read for fans of eerie, gripping storytelling” (Dean Koontz, #1 New York Times bestselling author), The Chill is “a creepy tale of supernatural terror” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
