Book Trade Unions and Society

Download or read book Trade Unions and Society written by Hamish Fraser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, Trade Unions and Society examines the process by which trade unions sought and achieved recognition in the three decades after 1850. It shows a parallel process: on the one hand, trade unionists struggling to attain the indispensable Victorian virtue, ‘respectability’, without sacrificing their essentially protective functions; on the other hand, employers recognizing the value of an ordered system of industrial relation in which trade unions could exert discipline and control over their workers. While this was going on, middle-class radicals (often themselves employers) continued their attack on aristocratic domination of political institutions and looked to a ‘labour aristocracy’ as allies. The book shows the manner in which, thanks to their own efforts and those of their indefatigable publicists, unionists became identified with the respectable elite of the working class. It deals with a crucial period in the trade union development but looks at it not merely from the point of view of the unions, but also that of the employers, politicians, the press, intellectuals, political economists, giving for the first time a rounded picture of trade unionism and industrial relations in the third quarter of the nineteenth century. This book will be of interest to students of economics and history.

Book Markets corporate behaviour and the state

Download or read book Markets corporate behaviour and the state written by A.P. Jacquemin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originated at a meeting of American and European specialists in in dustrial organization, at the Instituut voor Bedrijfskunde, Nijenrode (The Netherlands) in August, 1974. The conference endeavored to bring together re searchers in a field where, paradoxically, the underlying phenomena studied are increasingly coordinated and internationalized, yet the observers remain pre dominantly isolated. Only rarely do they resort to comparisons between coun tries, and still less frequently to an analysis from a transnational outlook. As the contributions to this collection demonstrate, it has become clearer and clearer that -whether or not as a result of a random process, or of technological conditions, or of deliberate enterprise strategy - the determinants of market structures and their changes as time passes, have created fundamentally similar effects in different countries, resulting in industrial structures of the same kind. Thus, the largest firms and plants are found in the same sectors, and the most concentrated industries are more or less the same from one country to the other. The studies of Prais, Reid, Jacquemin & Phlips and Linda likewise show that a broad trend toward concentration has been manifest.

Book The Scope and Method of Political Economy

Download or read book The Scope and Method of Political Economy written by John Neville Keynes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elder Keynes argues that almost every problem connected with the scope and method of political economy has given rise to conflict of opinion. The resulting controversies have sometimes been bitter. Those readers, who already have any acquaintance with the literature of economic method should be prepared to find that several of the chapters are controversial in character. At the same time, Keynes avoids the tone of a partisan and represents both sides of the argument without prejudice. While making no attempt to bring about a complete reconciliation between opposing views, Keynes shows the nature of the opposition between them has sometimes been misunderstood, and its extent consequently exaggerated. Since the scope and method of a science can never be satisfactorily discussed at the commencement of its study, some knowledge of political economy in its general outlines is assumed. The nature of the topics discussed in this classic is indicated in the introductory chapter. The abstract discussion of methods is one to which students of economics must necessarily give attention in the course of their reading, and its indirect bearing on the solution of practical economic questions is very close in contemporary importance in today's society.

Book Economic Analysis of Sub Saharan Africa Real Estate Policies

Download or read book Economic Analysis of Sub Saharan Africa Real Estate Policies written by F. N. Hammond and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investments are widely accepted as the matchless path to development. Real estate is as much a prerequisite for investment as are capital and labour. Nonetheless, relative progress in ensuring that arrangements concerning real estate are compatible with desired magnitudes of investments in Africa remains far from satisfactory. Treatment of real estate in the development literature remains tangential and incoherent. This volume explores why real estate policies in Africa have not worked well and examines how they can or should be more organised for efficient and successful outcomes. This book is essential reading for all interested in development economics, real estate economics and African studies.

Book An Introduction to the Economic Theory of Market Behavior

Download or read book An Introduction to the Economic Theory of Market Behavior written by Donald W. Katzner and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This is an important, rigorous, and thoroughly engaging text on the economic theory of market behavior. It is unique in the attention devoted to the philosophical underpinnings and the historical background of the Walrasian Theory. Professor Katzner challenges his readers to understand the strengths and the limitations of what has gone before, and he provides guidance as to how he would like to see price theory develop in the future. This is among those rare texts that is designed to inspire further research.' - Hugo Sonnenschein, University of Chicago, US
