Now, almost six hundred years after their creation, the colourful and highly refined miniatures in the "Belles Heures" and "Tr s Riches Heures du Duc de Berry" still speak vividly to our imagination. In 2005 Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen presented the exhibition The Limbourg Brothers. Nijmegen Masters at the French Court (1400-1416) . This was the first time that original miniatures from four manuscripts by the Limbourg brothers were shown in the Netherlands. The exhibition formed an excellent opportunity to invite prominent scholars to share their views on the art of the Limbourg brothers during a two-day conference. This publication presents in written form the conference papers delivered by some of the leading scholars in the field. In that respect, the volume acts as an addendum to the catalogue. Each of the 36 illuminations is discussed in turn, with reference to their pictorial traditions, to the French textual matter and to a unique contemporary commentary, called the Déclaration des hystoires. The Déclaration is one of the earliest essays in the history of art criticism to survive. The study is rendered useful for teachers and scholars by an English translation of the text of the Déclaration, which enables the reader to see the illustrations through the eyes of a 15th century critic.

She reveals how noblewomen used their private devotional manuscripts as vehicles for self-definition, to reflect familial, political, and social concerns, and to preserve the devotional and cultural traditions of their families. Drawing on documentation of women?s book collections that has been buried within the inventories of their fathers, husbands, or sons, Hand explores how these women contributed to the cultural and spiritual character of the courts, and played an integral role in the formation and evolution of the royal libraries in Northern Europe.
