Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grand River, winding for nearly 300 kilometres through southwestern Ontario, is a Heritage River, its watershed rich in prehistoric, historical and contemporary features. It is important in the history of First Peoples, and the story of European settlement along its banks is a microcosm of that in Canada as a whole. The watershed contains many treasures, such as part of the Carolinian Forest, some of the best farmland in Canada, the spectacular Elora Gorge and a wealth of historic architecture. Far more than that, the Grand is both uniquely itself and also typical of many of the planet’s rivers in the challenges it faces: issues of water management, farmland versus urban development, exploitation of natural resources and restoration of a polluted environment. Each of us lives in a watershed, and this is the story of our world. In the images and words of two artists, The Grand River explores the river’s history, beginning with its formation after the end of the last Ice Age. The book gives insight into the private life of a river—the dialogue of land and water—as well as the ways in which a river interacts with humans, vegetation, wildlife, weather and the planet. It takes the reader on an imaginary journey from the Grand’s first drop of moving water at the source to the point where it flows into Lake Erie.

Book Particular Condition in Life

Download or read book Particular Condition in Life written by David G. Burley and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1994 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Burley offers a new perspective on industrial capitalism and class formation in Canada by focusing on the rise of the bourgeoisie rather than the rise of the working class. Using the town of Brantford, Ontario, as his model, Burley examines how industrialization brought about a decline in self-employment (the measure of a man's success according to Victorian values) and a restructuring of traditional concepts of wealth, credit and debt, and success and failure.

Book Conservatism among the Iroquois at the Six Nations Reserve

Download or read book Conservatism among the Iroquois at the Six Nations Reserve written by Annemarie Anrod Shimony and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annemarie Anrod Shimony's classic work clearly shows the contemporary cultural and religious crises that face the Longhouse Iroquois at the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario. Shimony presents a lucid and eloquent account of the survival of the Native American tradition, which is struggling to maintain political and cultural autonomy in an ever-changing modern world. Based on original field work dating from 1953 to 1961, and supplemented by new material describing changes during the last thirty years, Shimony's work is once again the most comprehensive ethnography of the largest extant traditional Iroquoian community. Some of the material discussed includes the social organization, the system of hereditary chiefs, the beliefs and practices of the Longhouse religion, the events of the Iroquoian life cycle, and the extensive medicinal and witchcraft aspects of the culture. Additional areas of focus include the rituals of the agricultural calendar and Iroquois conceptions of death and burial rituals. As Elizabeth Tooker wrote in Indians of the Northeast, Shimony's monograph is, "next to Morgan's League, the most important general description of the Iroquois." With its new material added, Conservatism among the Iroquois is once again required reading for anyone interested in Native American culture.
