Book The Grammar of the Old High German Modal Particles Thoh Ia and Thanne

Download or read book The Grammar of the Old High German Modal Particles Thoh Ia and Thanne written by Mary Michele Wauchope and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1991 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive study of a set of Old High German particles, thoh, ia, and thanne, focuses on the pragmatic functions of those particles. After categorizing modal particles - particles which indicate implicitly a speaker's relationship to or attitude toward his or her own discourse - as a subset of metacommunicative particles, the author argues convincingly that thoh, ia, and thanne exhibit modal particle functions in four Old High German texts: they point to a speaker's presuppositions and expectations, determine interlocutionary force, and convey connotations ranging from surprise to accusation.

Book Discourse Particles

Download or read book Discourse Particles written by Josef Bayer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particles have for the longest time been ignored by linguistic research. School-type grammars ignored them since they did not fit into pre-conceived notions of categories, and since they did not seem to enter into grammatical relations commonly discussed in the genre. Only in the last century did some publications discuss particles – and even then only from the perspective of their discourse and pragmatic functions, i.e. their dependance on certain previous contexts, and concluded that the function of particles for the grammar of sentences and their interpretation remains obscure. The current volume presents 11 new articles that take a fresh look at particles: As it turns out, particles inform many aspects of syntax and semantics, too – both diachronically and synchronically: Particles are shown to have fascinating syntactic properties with respect to projection, locality, movement and scope. Their interpretative contributions can be studied with the rigorous methods of formal semantics. Cross-linguistic and diachronic investigations shed new light on the genesis and development of these intriguing – and under-estimated – kinds of lexical elements.

Book Studies in Gothic

Download or read book Studies in Gothic written by Jared S. Klein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-23 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates a wide range of topics in the study of Gothic, the oldest Germanic language to be attested in any substantial texts, some three centuries before the earliest Old English. It covers issues in sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, phonology, derivational morphology, verbal syntax, and discourse structure. Individual chapters examine Gothic-Latin bilingualism in sixth-century Italy, some hitherto undiscovered aspects of the production of the first edition of the Codex Argenteus associated with England, and the translations of Greek nominal compounds in the Gospels. Phonological and morphological topics covered include vowel lowering (?breaking?), the distinction between abstract nouns in -ei and -i?a, the shape of the 'yon'-word in Proto-Germanic, and the morphology and derivational history of the word fidur-dogs 'four-days-old'. The syntactic studies explore the development of verb + particle constructions in Gothic and Old Saxon, attempt to discern the order of noun plus adnominal possessive, and analyse the complex and in part cross-linguistically unparalleled markers of Gothic relative clauses. The volume concludes with two chapters that explore discourse structure: the first studies the particles nu and ?an in their dual roles as anaphoric elements ('now' and 'then') and as discourse particles, while the second examines the system of discourse articulation as a whole in the Gothic Gospels.

Book Visions and Visionaries in Contemporary Austrian Literature and Film

Download or read book Visions and Visionaries in Contemporary Austrian Literature and Film written by Margarete Lamb-Faffelberger and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions and Visionaries is an apt title for this volume of essays on contemporary Austrian literature and film, because this collection offers insightful discussions of a gallery of significant authors and cultural figures. It also investigates important issues of style and genre, and portrays questions of Austrian identity and culture in rich contexts of recent literary and multi-media developments, cross-cultural interactions, and historical forces. This book encompasses relevant trends and notions from the past - especially the complexities of lingering effects of the Nazi era - along with issues of the future - in particular the present and anticipated interactions of culture and cyberspace. The essays are enhanced by poems by Evelyn Schlag and Gerhard Kofler.
