Book Graduates in Industry

Download or read book Graduates in Industry written by Psi Psi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was much development of both education and industry in post-World War II Britain. There was, on the one hand, an extension of public education to the secondary school stage and the substantial financial help that was available, which meant that increasing numbers were going to university. On the other, there had been immense advances in scientific and technical knowledge and its application to industry. These advances in industry produced an increase in the demand for trained graduates. This book, first published in 1957, examines this correlation, and provides guidance for both graduates and hiring managers. This title will be of interest to students of human resource management and business studies.

Download or read book The Purposeful Graduate written by Timothy Thomas Clydesdale and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-05-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American higher education is more expensive than ever and the rewards seem to be diminishing daily. Sociologist Tim Clydesdale s new book, however, offers some rare good news: when colleges and universities meaningfully engage their organizational histories to launch sustained conversations with students about questions of purpose, the result is a rise in overall campus engagement and recalibration of post-college trajectories that set graduates on journeys of significance and impact. The book is based on a study of programs launched at 88 colleges and universities that invited students, faculty, staff, and administrators to incorporate questions of meaning and purpose into the undergraduate experience. The results were so positive that Clydesdale came away from the study arguing that every campus (religious or not) should engage students in a broad conversation about what it means to live an examined life. This conversation needs to be creative, intentional, systematic, and wide-ranging, he says, because for too long this core liberal educational task has been relegated to the margins, and its attendant religious or spiritual discourse banished from classrooms and quads, to the detriment of higher education s virtually universal mission: graduates marked by thoughtfulness, productivity, and engaged citizenship."

Book Graduates in Wonderland

Download or read book Graduates in Wonderland written by Jessica Pan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two best friends document their post-college lives in a hilarious, relatable, and powerfully honest epistolary memoir. Fast friends since they met at Brown University during their freshman year, Jessica Pan and Rachel Kapelke-Dale vowed to keep in touch after their senior year through in-depth—and brutally honest—weekly e-mails. After graduation, Jess packs up everything she owns and moves to Beijing on a whim, while Rachel heads to New York to work for an art gallery and to figure out her love life. Each spends the next few years tumbling through adulthood and reinventing themselves in various countries, including France, China, and Australia. Through their messages from around the world, they swap tales of teaching classes of military men, running a magazine, and flirting in foreign languages, along with the hard stuff: from harrowing accidents to breakups and breakdowns. Reminiscent of Sloan Crosley’s essays and Lena Dunham’s Girls, Graduates in Wonderland is an intimate, no-holds-barred portrait of two young women as they embark upon adulthood.

Book Central Park East and Its Graduates

Download or read book Central Park East and Its Graduates written by David Bensman and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, Central Park East Elementary School (CPE) in East Harlem opened its doors with a mission to provide inner-city children with the finest educators and pedagogy available. Instead of saying that the old neighborhood had to be torn down and students more rigidly tracked, the reformers dared to ask the question, What would happen if we gave inner-city students the best education the country has to offer? The results of this bottom-up reform were astounding, and to this day, Central Park East is known as one of the most academically enriching schools in the United States. David Bensman gives voice to the extraordinary young adults who emerged from poverty as a result of the powerful educational experiences they received at CPE. A rich compilation of stories, this account establishes the power of public schooling and the value of community. “With rich data, Bensman carefully details for us what it means to be respectful, thoughtful, democratic, and intellectually demanding—what it means, in short, to be a good school. This is the story of CPE, but for anyone willing to see beyond the particulars, it is also a map of possibility, a guide to what our schools could be.” —Mike Rose, author, Possible Lives: The Promise of Public Education in America “This is that rare thing, a long-term study of the graduates of a first-rate inner city elementary school. This is a school in which democracy and the life of the mind are inseparably intertwined. Policymakers, write that last sentence down one hundred times.” —Joseph Featherstone, Michigan State University “Was the fame of CPE due to hype or yet another example of wishing trumping realities? This conceptually and procedurally honest research effort clearly answers the question in the negative. We have very good reason to be grateful to Debbie Meier, her CPE colleagues, and, of course, to Dr. Bensman for this remarkable follow-up study.” —Seymour Sarason, Professor Emeritus, Yale University
