Download or read book The Government of Michigan written by Charles R. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of Michigan: Its History and Jurisprudence; Also, a Brief Outline of the Government of the United States The object of this work is to supply a want long felt and now fully recognized by the people. Books have been writ ten on the science of government, which have gained admit tance into our schools; and many of our youth have, in this way, acquired much valuable information. They have learned some of the first lessons of civil government, and have been made acquainted with an outline of the government of the United States, but as yet they have not been supplied with that information concerning our own State Government, and our own responsibilities and duties so important to enable us to act well our part as citizens. If the succeeding pages of this work shall serve to impart a knowledge of our civil jurisprudence, and of the framework and machinery of our State Government, if they shall furnish an insight into our political institutions, then surely it will inspire in the hearts of those who study them, a devotion to those institutions; and the more we know of them, the more shall we admire the wisdom and appreciate the statesmanship of the great and good men whose business it was to lay broad and deep the foundations upon which we, as a State, have built and are building. The demand for a second edition, within two months from the time when the first was issued, has encouraged the author to revise the work. It is hoped that the historical sketch, and other matter which has been added to this edition, will greatly enhance its value and usefulness as a text-book. Michigan was among the first states to admit African-Americans and women to its law schools and was the first governmental entity to abolish the death penalty. Additionally, the state, unlike its midwestern neighbors, did not enact racial exclusion laws in the post-Civil War era. Michigan has also played a leading role in developing modern rape laws, in protecting the environment, and in assuring the right to counsel for those accused of crimes. The story of Michigan's legal development includes high profile cases such as the Dr. Ossian Sweet murder trial, the cross-district busing case Milliken v. Bradley, and the affirmative action cases brought against the University of Michigan Law School. The History of Michigan Law documents and analyzes, as well, Michigan legal develpments in environmental history, civil rights, and women's history. This book will serve as the entry point for all future studies that involve the law in Michigan. With 2005 marking the bicentennial of the establishment of the Michigan Supreme Court, as well as the bicentennial of the creation of the Michigan Territory, The History of Michigan Law has appeal beyond the legal community to scholars and students of American history. Book Michigan a History of Governments Classic Reprint

Download or read book Michigan a History of Governments Classic Reprint written by Thomas McIntyre Cooley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Michigan a History of Governments The changes of sovereign as well as of subordi nate jurisdiction have been greater in Michigan than in any other part of the American Union. France, Great Britain, and the United States have successively had dominion over it, and under the United States it was part of the Northwest Terri tory and of the Territory Of Indiana before it be came the Territory of Michigan. As Michigan Territory it passed through all the grades Of subordinate jurisdiction, and the circumstances attending its admission to the Union made its his tory at that period quite unique. Altogether it seemed appropriate that in the series of American Commonwealths the history of Michigan should be sketched as a history of governments but this would be incomplete without a summary view of the relations of States to the Union at the time Michigan was received into it, or without some. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil Government of Michigan: With Chapters on Political Machinery The book is designed not only for schools, but also for general use. There is a lamentable amount of ignorance, even among educated men, as to the workings of our political system. It is absolutely indispensable in a republic that every one should understand the functions of the govern ment and the obligations of citizenship, so as to discharge intelligently the duties of an elector. The author is under great obligation to His Excellency, Gov. Charles M. Croswell, for valuable information, and for numerous State documents.
