Book State and Local Government in Illinois

Download or read book State and Local Government in Illinois written by Samuel Kimball Gove and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State and Local Government in Illinois: A Bibliography This bibliography has been designed to aid those persons who desire knowledge of problems, achievements, and processes of state and local government in Illinois, other than that embodied in statutes, court decisions, and reports of administrative agencies. The emphasis is on materials dealing at length with specific issues of state-wide significance. Social, economic, and political histories and similar studies have been added as necessary background but kept to a short list of outstanding works. Studies pertaining to a single unit of local government have generally been omitted, although exceptions have been made particularly in the case of the several significant studies of Chicago government and problems. Materials for inclusion in this bibliography are largely restricted to information on the practice of government in Illinois under the Constitution of 1870 up to September 1953 and only a few items relating to the period before 1900 have been listed. Although there is justification for including materials even back to the territorial laws, available resources dictated a limitation to more current materials. A cross reference system in the table of contents has been de vised to aid the user of this bibliography in locating works that touch on one or more subject matters. This alternative subject list ing should be searched by those persons desirous of making an exhaustive study of a particular problem area. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illinois: History, Government, Geography How has Illinois grown from a wilder ness of prairies 'to a prosperous state supporting a population of more than 10 million? The answer is that Illinois is rich in natural advantages. One of the greatest of these is its location. Others are fertile plains suitable for farming, a favorable climate, and valuable mineral resources. All these resources, however, would have been of little value with out people who could make good use of them. It is the people of Illinois who by their ideas, their skills, and their energy have made our state what it is today. Thanks to what they have done, Illinois has become great. Similar opportunities exist for everyone living in Illinois today. You, too, can share in building a greater future for our state. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People of the State of Illinois IT has seemed to the author that the wisdom of the fathers, in separating the functions of government into three departments, and entrusting them to different groups of persons, was not sufficiently appreciated. The changes which are suggested by the discontented of to-day' would practically destroy this' safeguard of our liberties. If this little volume shall assist in impressing upon the youth of our State, not only the excellence of the dis tinction between the Legislative, Executive and Judicial powers, but also the fact that safety lies in keeping them distinct, the object of the writer will be attained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Civil Government of Illinois: With a Brief Outline of the Political History of the State to the Adoption of the Constitution The time evidently is at hand for a forward movement of the educational forces Of this State in the line Of a more formal endeavor to make a good citizen. Hitherto it seems to have been assumed that no distinctive instruction in citizenship was necessary, but that there was a potency in the spelling book and 'the other branches commonly taught which was sufficient, although it is a matter Of everyday Observation that a man may be even highly educated and still a very poor citizen. TO this lack Of familiarity with the spirit and form Of our govern ment can doubtless be traced no small part Of the political indifference Of our day. To win this battle for good citizenship many forces may be called into action, but none are more prominently before the teachers than what may be called the tactics Of good citizen ship namely, Civil Government.
