Book Wellbeing and Devolution

Download or read book Wellbeing and Devolution written by Jennifer Wallace and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been over twenty years since the people of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland voted for devolution. Over that time, the devolved legislatures have established themselves and matured their approach to governance. At different times and for different reasons, each has put wellbeing at the heart of their approach – codifying their values and goals within wellbeing frameworks. This open access book explores, for the first time, why each set their goal as improving wellbeing and how they balance the core elements of societal wellbeing (economic, social and environmental outcomes). Do the frameworks represent a genuine attempt to think differently about how devolved government can plan and organise public services? And if so, what early indications are there of the impact is this having on people’s lives?

Book New Governance New Democracy

Download or read book New Governance New Democracy written by Paul Chaney and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the National Assembly for Wales and Scottish Parliament has altered the democratic landscape of the UK. In assuming many policy and adminstraitve responsiblities previously held by the central government, the Welsh assembly promises innovation in governance and there are high expectations that devolution will bring about significant changes in Welsh life. New Governance - New Democracy? questions whether these expectations are likely to be fulfiled. Drawing on interviews with many of the people who have influenced the devolution experiment, from poltitions to ordinary citizens, this book offers interdisciplinary discussion and analysis of issues ranging from electorial turnout, participation and legitimacy to the involvement of marginalized groups in the process of government. It also examines the developing relationship between the new Welsh legislature and the voluntary sector, the governance of economic development and the regulation and political control of public agencies in Wales.

Book The Dialogue of the Government of Wales 1594

Download or read book The Dialogue of the Government of Wales 1594 written by John Gwynfor Jones and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is broadly divided into two main sections. The first part comprises a detailed introduction to the background of "The Dialogue", written in 1594 by George Owen of Henllys, north Pembrokeshire, followed by an updated version of the text with explanatory notes. George Owen was the most observant Welsh historians of the late sixteenth century, and in the "Dialogue" he discusses the main functions of legal institutions of government in Tudor Wales following the Acts of Union (1536-43). The discourse is not merely a description of those institutions but rather, in the form of a dialogue, it provides an analysis of the good and bad aspects of the Tudor legal structure. Emphasis is placed on the administration of the Acts of Union, and comparisons are drawn with the harsh penal legislation which had previously been imposed by Henry IV. Owen reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the Henrician settlement, but heartily praises the Tudor regime, regarding Henry VII and Henry VIII as liberators of the Welsh nation which the author, in the 'prophetic tradition', associated with the nation's historic destiny. In this 'Dialogue' Demetus is described as a native Welsh gentleman and Barthol as the German lawyer from Frankfort travelling through Europe and observing legal practices. The Socratic method applied reveals the Renaissance style of conducting debates, a framework which gives the work much of its appeal. The "Dialogue" is an invaluable Tudor source which places Welsh Tudor government and administration in a broader historical perspective.

Book The Governance of Wales

Download or read book The Governance of Wales written by Russell Deacon and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst political devolution did not occur until 1999, administrative devolution was created in Wales in 1964 with the establishment of the Welsh Office. This government ministry dominated political life in Wales and determined many aspects of government policy in Wales. The Welsh Secretaries in the shape of politicians such as Jim Griffiths, George Thomas, Nicholas Edwards, Peter Walker, David Hunt, John Redwood and William Hague shaped the political life of Wales through the strength of their own personalities and personal political agendas. Using interviews with many of the past Secretaries of State for Wales including Ron Davies and Alun Michael, this book provides the first comprehensive history of the former Welsh Office and the policy creation process. It is of interest to anyone who wishes to explore how the Welsh Office developed policy in Wales before the advent of the National Assembly. At the same time it enables the reader to view the characters and political agendas that have shaped the modern Welsh nation. This book will contribute to the growing interest in Welsh politics, providing an extensively researched background to one of Wales's most important post war institutions.

Book Whose Wales

Download or read book Whose Wales written by Gwynoro Jones and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So whose Wales is it? There is a degree of ambiguity that runs through Welsh politics that in turn has hindered discussions of a clear Welsh political identity. Can any one party claim to have done more than any other in the fight for securing and then developing Welsh devolution? The track record of all four main players, Liberal, Labour, Conservative and Plaid Cymru, is looked at, from the time of Queen Victoria to these days of devolution and Yes Cymru. From one of the leading proponents of the devolution of Wales, Gwynoro Jones, and an award-winning author and former BBC journalist, Alun Gibbard, this well illustrated book looks at these often-bitter claims and counterclaims. Alun Gibbards' insightful documenting and analysis complement Gwynoro Jones' first-hand experience and knowledge in a project that is unique in its scope and structure. Between 1536 and 1542 the regime of Henry VIII incorporated Wales into England. Wales was to have no separate existence. Its language was banned from public life and its legal system abolished. It was meant to disappear. Yet here we are in the 21st Century with an increasingly self-governing Wales with a strong sense of identity and a pride in its language. Alun Gibbard and Gwynoro Jones have traced the revival of Wales from the industrialising country of the 1880s and the nonconformist consciousness that led to Sunday closing. They describe the bitter battles over devolution in the 1970s through to the small margin in favour of a Welsh Assembly in 1997 and on to the well-established lawmaking, tax-varying Parliament with solid public support that we see today. We were not meant to be here. This book shows how we survived. Carwyn Jones First Minister of Wales 2009-2018 The rhetorical question in the book's title, Whose Wales? echoes the kind of questions which historians and political commentators have raised over the decades, from Gwyn Alf Williams' When was Wales? to Dai Smith's enigmatic question in the title of his book on Welsh politics, Wales! Wales? Professor Sir Deian Hopkin.
