Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present to an international audience the medieval sculpture of Uppsala Cathedral, in particular that of the High Middle Ages to be found mainly in the choir, where in the decades around 1300 French workshops were at work, among them that of Estienne de Bonnueill. The emphasis is on the figural material and its interpretation, but examples are also given of the foliate ornament, which is of a very high standard. Part of the book is devoted to a series of reliefs on the corbels around the sanctuary. According to the author, its programme was most probably intended to be used primarily in the spiritual guidance offered by the church. The book also gives an expose of the figures on the capitals and portals. The imagery here consists in part of sometimes rather unorthodox fabulous beasts, no doubt partly products of the sculptors' imaginations.

This book draws on over 100 medieval Danish and Swedish manuscripts and incunabula as well as runic inscriptions and religious art (c. 1200-1515) to answer this question. There were no resident Jews in Scandinavia before the modern period, yet as this book shows ideas and fantasies about them appear to have been widespread and an integral part of life and culture in the medieval North. Volume 1 investigates the possibility of encounters between Scandinavians and Jews, the terminology used to write about Jews, Judaism, and Hebrew, and how Christian writers imagined the Jewish body. The (mis)use of Jews in different texts, especially miracle tales, exempla, sermons, and Passion treaties, is examined to show how writers employed the figure of the Jew to address doubts concerning doctrine and heresy, fears of violence and mass death, and questions of emotions and sexuality. Volume 2 contains diplomatic editions of 54 texts in Old Danish and Swedish together with translations into English that make these sources available to an international audience for the first time and demonstrate how the image of the Jew was created in medieval Scandinavia.

Examining the movement of sculptures, sculptors, practices, skills, styles and motifs across borders, through studios and public architectures, within popular and print culture and via texts, the essays collected here consider the extent to which the sculptural artwork is changed by its physical movement and its transfigurations in other media. How does the meaning and form of these objects performatively respond to the pressure of their relocations and rematerialisations? Conversely, how do sculptures impact their new contexts of display? The contributing authors engage with a wide variety of objects and media in their essays.
