Book excerpt: Is God loving? The Bible says that God is love; however, it also portrays a God that floods the earth, takes the lives of the firstborn in Egypt, and lashes out time and again in His fury. How can a God of love be synonymous with the God of fury displayed in the Old Testament? Are we fools? “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowled≥ fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Pro 1:7). Twice in the Proverbs we’re told that the beginning of knowledge and wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Is it possible that we have become altogether ignorant simply because we’ve tossed out the Bible’s basic teaching on God’s fury? The Fury of God penetrates the paradox and shows that we cannot truly understand God’s love until we fully understand His fury. If believers today are truly abiding in God’s Word, they will come face-to-face with the fury of God, and its truth will bring satisfaction to their souls. God’s people must know the truth. They longingly desire it. The truth is that our God is a consuming fire. He is a jealous God. He is a holy God. He is an unchanging God. He is a triune God. Our God is a God of fury. It is that God, the God of the Scriptures, whom I hope to resurrect in the hearts and minds of His people with this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the New York Times bestselling Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, comes Unholy Night, the next evolution in dark historical revisionism. They're an iconic part of history's most celebrated birth. But what do we really know about the Three Kings of the Nativity, besides the fact that they followed a star to Bethlehem bearing strange gifts? The Bible has little to say about this enigmatic trio. But leave it to Seth Grahame-Smith, the brilliant and twisted mind behind Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to take a little mystery, bend a little history, and weave an epic tale. In Grahame-Smith's telling, the so-called "Three Wise Men" are infamous thieves, led by the dark, murderous Balthazar. After a daring escape from Herod's prison, they stumble upon the famous manger and its newborn king. The last thing Balthazar needs is to be slowed down by young Joseph, Mary and their infant. But when Herod's men begin to slaughter the first born in Judea, he has no choice but to help them escape to Egypt. It's the beginning of an adventure that will see them fight the last magical creatures of the Old Testament; cross paths with biblical figures like Pontius Pilate and John the Baptist; and finally deliver them to Egypt. It may just be the greatest story never told.

Book The Gospel in Black and White

Download or read book The Gospel in Black and White written by Dennis L. Okholm and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After signal victories of the civil rights movement in the sixties, recent events have shown that the divide between black and white Americans remains alarmingly wide. And as African- and Euro-Americans perhaps increasingly find themselves at odds politically and culturally, Sunday-morning worship dismayingly remains the most segregated hour of the week.Yet Christians of both races affirm that the gospel calls them together, that they at least should be one people, of one Lord, one faith, one baptism. In that spirit, the incisive and challenging essays in this book consider what rigorous theological work can contribute to the noble and ongoing quest for racial reconciliation. Some of the church's most exciting black and white thinkers are gathered here by editor Dennis Okholm to address issues of theological method, hermeneutics, soteriology, ecclesiology and social ethics--always with an eye to closing the gaping wound of racism and serving God's kingdom across color lines.

Book excerpt: In Fury: Women write about sex, power and violence, 16 exceptional writers, led by editor Samantha Trenoweth, put violence against women into the spotlight. Their perspectives range from the searingly personal to the positively political. What emerges is a fascinating exploration of the power dynamic between men and women, and some creative strategies to address the inequalities built into it. Mandy Sayer gives a moving account of her childhood spent fleeing a violent stepfather; Anne Summers revisits the anarchic early days of the women’s refuge movement; Van Badham and Susan Chenery give accounts of violence in suburban Australia and pastoral Tuscany that suggest even the smartest women are vulnerable to assault; Indian poet and novelist Meena Kandasamy addresses rape culture on the subcontinent; and inspiring young activist Fahma Mohamed writes of her crusade against female genital mutilation. In recent times, we have seen girlfriends shot in their bathrooms and thrown from balconies; mothers and kids turned away from underfunded refuges; women raped on Indian buses, American campuses, and in Australian homes. It’s time we talked about it. Fury explores the intersection between culture, gender and social change through voices that are passionate, insightful and, above all, empowering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major book to examine ancient Christian literature on hell through the lenses of gender and disability studies Throughout the Christian tradition, descriptions of hell’s fiery torments have shaped contemporary notions of the afterlife, divine justice, and physical suffering. But rarely do we consider the roots of such conceptions, which originate in a group of understudied ancient texts: the early Christian apocalypses. In this pioneering study, Meghan Henning illuminates how the bodies that populate hell in early Christian literature—largely those of women, enslaved persons, and individuals with disabilities—are punished after death in spaces that mirror real carceral spaces, effectually criminalizing those bodies on earth. Contextualizing the apocalypses alongside ancient medical texts, inscriptions, philosophy, and patristic writings, this book demonstrates the ways that Christian depictions of hell intensified and preserved ancient notions of gender and bodily normativity that continue to inform Christian identity.

Book Dear Church

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lenny Duncan
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2019-07-02
  • ISBN : 1506452574
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book Dear Church written by Lenny Duncan and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lenny Duncan is the unlikeliest of pastors. Formerly incarcerated, he is now a black preacher in the whitest denomination in the United States: the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Shifting demographics and shrinking congregations make all the headlines, but Duncan sees something else at work--drawing a direct line between the church's lack of diversity and the church's lack of vitality. The problems the ELCA faces are theological, not sociological. But so are the answers. Part manifesto, part confession, and all love letter, Dear Church offers a bold new vision for the future of Duncan's denomination and the broader mainline Christian community of faith. Dear Church rejects the narrative of church decline and calls everyone--leaders and laity alike--to the front lines of the churchÂs renewal through racial equality and justice. It is time for the church to rise up, dust itself off, and take on forces of this world that act against God: whiteness, misogyny, nationalism, homophobia, and economic injustice. Duncan gives a blueprint for the way forward and urges us to follow in the revolutionary path of Jesus.
