Book The Myth of the Stone Campbell Movement

Download or read book The Myth of the Stone Campbell Movement written by Jim Cook and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-09-09 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stone-Campbell Movement was created in 1832 when Barton Stone’s “Christ-ians” from the West merged with Alexander Campbell’s “Reforming Baptists.” By the beginning of the Civil War it was the sixth largest religious movement in the United States, and in the twentieth century the movement split into the three main branches that exist today. In recent years, scholars from these branches have worked to better understand their nineteenth-century roots, creating the historical sub-field “restoration history” in which historians and other scholars debate the influence of Stone and Campbell on specific characteristics of the existing branches. Bringing new insight into that debate, Jim Cook uses the writings of both Stone and Campbell to show that Stone was not a viable leader of the movement after 1832 and that his ideas were not part of what influenced the twentieth-century branches of the movement. This study demonstrates that the debates going on between “restoration historians” are thus predicated on the false assumption that Stone influenced people within his movements and proves that Stone was an outsider in the movement that bears his name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the Whore of Babylon image found in the book of Revelation, with an emphasis upon the use and influence of the text on the Brethren of the nineteenth century. The Brethren developed a multi-layered exegesis of the text, using Babylon as a form of vituperative rhetoric through which to vilify all other Christians in order to define their own religious identity. Those with divergent doctrinal beliefs belonged to an epistemological Babylon; those polluted by the world belonged to secular Babylon. Babylon was contagious! It is from the pens of these writers that the Secret Rapture of the Church doctrine developed as a biological "fight or flight" response, and a psychological "fear and fantasy" response. Whilst the Brethren of the nineteenth century are the central focus, the book will have a wider appeal to those interested in the history of exegesis, hermeneutics, and Apocalypse studies, for it also offers an overview of hermeneutical approaches to the reading of Revelation, a survey of Babylon's "afterlife" throughout the history of the church, and new insights into the ways in which readers, texts, and contexts interact in the broader context of sectarian biblical exegesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Son of God didn't first come onto the scene in the final quarter of the Bible. He appeared as a fascinating and sometimes mysterious figure throughout the Old Testament. He is called by many names and referred to in many ways. He appeared as the Word of the Lord, as the presence within the Glory of the Lord, as the personification of Wisdom, as the Angel of the Lord, as the Captain of the Lord's army, and as Yahweh on earth. Some of his appearances were dramatic, while others were subtle. Each of them highlights the Son's role as the Father's messenger. And the appearances all foreshadowed the Incarnation, when the Son of God would become a man and more fully reveal the Godhead to his creation.

Book The Complete Works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on Prayer Volume 2

Download or read book The Complete Works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on Prayer Volume 2 written by Zacharias Tanee Fomum and published by ZTF Books Online. This book was released on with total page 1203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Complete Works of Zacharias Tanee Fomum on Prayer (Volume 2)” contains the following books: 1) The Art of Intercession 2) The Practice of Intercession 3) Practical Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer 4) Life-Changing Thoughts on Prayer (Volume 1) 5) The Overthrow of Principalities and Powers 6) The Prophecy of the Overthrow of the Satanic Prince of Douala 7) The Prophecy of the Overthrow of the Prince of Cameroon Having left the ABCs of prayer behind, this volume deals with the intricacies of intercession, spiritual warfare, and the overthrow of satanic princes ruling entire nations behind the scenes. It tackles both the art and practice of intercession. Simply put, intercession is both the art and practice by a righteous, blameless, and absolutely consecrated person, to accept, stand in the gap, and defend a person or people that God has targeted for destruction due to their brazen and sustained violation of His will. The Lord’s response to Moses’ intercession and entreaty for the children of Israel was swift and dramatic. The Bible says, “Then the Lord relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened”(Exodus 32:14). That was intercession in both its art and practice. So many advanced believers in Christ don’t even believe that satanic princes exist. They exist. They are so real, so devastating in their work and so strangulating in their grip of people and their affairs, that you can only ignore them to your own undoing. Daniel battled these satanic princes all his adult life in exile in the Babylonian, Persian, and Median realms. He did so through strategic, prevailing, and sustained prayer and fasting (Daniel 10:1-21; 11:1). He battled in prayer and fasting until the satanic princes of Persia and Greece, which were opposing God’s purposes, were overcame, overturned, and overthrown. We send this second prayer volume out with a cry to the Lord that He should use it to teach the church of the Firstborn the intricacies of intercession and spiritual warfare. In this age of atheism, agnosticism, humanism, espionage, robots, sophisticated gadgets, and the Internet, there was never a time we needed intercession and spiritual warfare like now.

Book Living to the Praise of God s Glory

Download or read book Living to the Praise of God s Glory written by Mark A. Simon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letter to the Ephesians is missional to its core. It effectively exhorts its readers to understand, support, and participate in God’s mission to rescue humanity and all creation from the damage and distortion of sin, and so bring about a renewed creation filled with God’s glorious fullness. Working at the creative intersection of biblical studies and missiology, this study adopts a missional hermeneutic to overcome the scholarly neglect of mission in Ephesians. The book systematically explores each passage in Ephesians, delving into the characterization of God and his mission; allusions to Old Testament missional texts in Ephesians; and the portrayal of the apostle Paul and believers as participants in God’s mission. A multi-faceted vision of mission emerges which encompasses God’s actions in salvation history; the church as mediator of God’s glory, reconciliation and grace to the nations; prayer; ethical witness; and verbal proclamation of the gospel. Reading Ephesians through this missional lens yields fresh insights into its purpose and context, and the richness of its portrait of mission.

Book Is the Future Set in Stone

Download or read book Is the Future Set in Stone written by Troy J. Edwards and published by Troy Edwards. This book was released on with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God knows all things and there is nothing that is hidden from Him. Therefore, if the future is already in existence and is a settled reality then there is no doubt that God knows it exhaustively. Yet, what if the future does not exist as the past did and the present currently does? Is it necessary for an omniscient God to have exhaustive knowledge of a non-existent entity? In his book, "Is the Future Set in Stone?," Pastor Troy J. Edwards presents a thorough examination of the Scriptures, revealing the fact that the future is NOT in existence until it happens. This truth is important to understanding why God is by no means responsible for the fall of devils, men and the horrendous evil on the earth. You will also see how God works with His free-will creatures to shape the future and bring it about.
