Book The Gospel in the New Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Charles Harold Dodd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye and believe the gospel. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the New Testament It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit Of God, guiding them constantly from within. Book The Gospel of John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel of John Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of John The Gospel of John is perhaps the best loved and most frequently read of any of the gospels. Recent scholarship has thrown much light upon the authorship and purpose of this gospel and the part which it played in the developing thought and life Of the early Christians. Investigation, although modifying some current views of this gospel, has added greatly to its value as a Christian document. Viewed in the light of its origin and purpose, it becomes replete with life, not only the life of the Master and his disciples, but with the intellectual and spiritual struggles Of the Christians of the hundred years following the death of Jesus. This course presents the gospel in the light of recent scholarship but simply and for the study of individuals and groups, in the home, church, or the com munity. It is one of the Outline bible-study Courses prepared by the American Institute of Sacred Literature, twelve similar courses being mentioned on a preceding page. This course follows the general method of all the series, giving a daily assignment for reading from the Bible, but requiring no books of reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the New Testament: The Collection of the Four Gospels and the Gospel of St. Matthew The first and strictly preliminary chapter of this second volume will not deal with the composition of our gospels. I shall confine myself to inquire how and when the group, hitherto closed and inseparable, of these four writings was formed, Which we shall have thereafter to study separately. In the first volume of this work I had not to strike out a new path, for studies pursued during a long series of years had led me to convictions very much in accordance with the views generally admitted on the composition, the date, and the chronological order of the thirteen epistles Of St. Paul which I regard as authentic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament, Revised and Translated: With Notes and Instructions, Designed to Aid the Earnest Reader in Obtaining a Clear Understanding of the Doctrines, Ordinances, and Primitive Assemblies, as Revealed in These Scriptures There is yet one other matter the writer has not felt free to copy from others; Viz., the habit of transferring a participial modifier of the subject to the predicate, and make it a part of a compound predicate; as, and having taken a towel, He girded Himself, instead of, as some revisions have it, and took a towel and girded Himself. This may make the same general meaning, but it is not true to the Greek; and, besides, it assumes the right to put in an and that is not found in the Greek. This is a very common occurrence in most translations. It is needless to say, after what has been said above, that this book appears in the interest of no denomination of Christians; nor does the writer expect any of them, as such, to adopt it; albeit, he does expect intelligent Christians, into whose hands it may fall, who are hungering and thirsting for the Gospel of Christ, to appreciate it; and to help in its distribution over the land, regardless of all petty sect opposition. The writer feels sure that those who read and Study this version carefully and prayer fully, in connection with the notes, will be led to drop many of the traditions of men, and come into the possession of a much larger Gospel, than has been ordinarily dealt out to them. The Gospel of Christ, in its fullest meaning, and with all its provisions for the wants of our sinful race, is none too large; and it has been one aim with the writer, all the way through, to bring out, so far as he has been able, the whole truth, as truth is in Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Gospels: A New Translation Jesus and his disciples spoke and wrote Aramaic. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek.
