Book The Rebirth of Latin American Christianity

Download or read book The Rebirth of Latin American Christianity written by Todd Hartch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predominantly Catholic for centuries, Latin America is still largely Catholic today, but the religious continuity in the region masks great changes that have taken place in the past five decades. In fact, it would be fair to say that Latin American Christianity has been transformed definitively in the years since the Second Vatican Council. Religious change has not been obvious because its transformation has not been the sudden and massive growth of a new religion, as in Africa and Asia. It has been rather a simultaneous revitalization and fragmentation that threatened, awakened, and ultimately brought to a greater maturity a dormant and parochial Christianity. New challenges from modernity, especially in the form of Protestantism and Marxism, ultimately brought forth new life. In The Rebirth of Latin American Christianity, Todd Hartch examines the changes that have swept across Latin America in the last fifty years, and situates them in the context of the growth of Christianity in the global South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Renaissant Latin America: An Outline and Interpretation of the Congress on Christian Work in Latin America, Held at Panama, February 10-19, 1916 In preparing this condensed account Of an epoch marking conference, the author has been embarrassed by space limitations which have necessitated the omis sion of much material quite as important as some that has been included. His aim has been to select that which is most typical of the Panama Congress and to omit duplications, so far as the completeness Of separate chapters would allow. Repetitions still remain for the reason that a number Of the Commissions needed to include material which had been used in a different relation in other reports; and to omit these duplicated portions would mar the completeness Of a given Com mission's work. Book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life Classic Reprint written by A. A. Berle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Book The Gospel and the New World Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel and the New World Classic Reprint written by Robert E. Speer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the New World These are questions which must be frankly and broadly faced in the new day which is dawning. And fresh political issues are coming clearly into View. The principle of the self-determination of peoples, the tide of democratic feeling that is rising in the hearts of the na tions, the new realization of the importance of right racial education and the increasing need of instrumen talities of just and charitable international interpretation are setting the work of foreign missions in a new light in the thought of the world. Is it desirable or probable that in consequence, the foreign mission work is to be modified in its character, or is it to be still an unswerving and direct religious enterprise with wide and inevitable social and political bearings, but with undiminished and dominating loyalty to its central spiritual ideals? These are some of the questions which are considered in this volume. It is plain that the work of foreign missions is one of the indispensable forces in the life and progress of the world. It is of the utmost importance that that force shall be kept pure and true, that its functions shall be clearly discerned and its right field of action be justly recognized and that the movement shall make its full contribution to the moral good of mankind, to the estab ishment of a new order of righteous relationships of men and of nations based on the principles of justice and service, and to the lasting peace of the world.
