Book The Gospel at Work in Modern Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel at Work in Modern Life Classic Reprint written by Robert Whitaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel at Work in Modern Life We are not seeking quiet now, and few Of us are seeking solitude. Our very books have become the clamorous voices Of the unrest of our day. Our ideal of the saintly life has changed. We reverence the mystics, in art glass, but our own heart's saints are the men of strenuous life. We read the words of a Kempis somewhat as we look upon the window there, touched with the glory Of the westering sun, with a certain sensitive enjoyment of its rich color ing and artistic lines, feeling in a way the delicate hues of his words and the fine tracery of his thought. But we turn from it all to our tasks which are lighted after all by the colder light that flows in through unadorned windows, or perchance the nearer glow of the electric light. And sometimes the imitation Of Christ seems itself as unreal as the figures wrought in art glass yonder on the walls, and as far removed from the conditions Of our ordinary life as the glowing electric bulb from the shadowy cell of the medieval monk. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and Modern Life The Pall Mall Gazette, besides its other claims on public attention, has distinguished itself by taking a decided line in matters relating to theology. The conductors of this newspaper have declined to regard theology as a province with which the general public has nothing to do, and have had the candour, whilst they attack the religious professions of others, to enunciate in vigorous and plain-spoken writing a creed of their own. They thus address a fair challenge to those whose creed they assail, and in one of their recent criticisms they have made it especially incumbent upon those who hold such a faith as is set forth in this volume to consider what reason they can give for their hope. The first article in the creed of the Pall Mall Gazette is, that as to things belonging to the unseen world certainty is not to be attained. Some suppositions are probable. Nothing is more than probable. To this preliminary article the Gazette returns again and again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: The Gospel Restored Prefaces, as a rule, are not read, and we do not intend to bore the reader with any unaccepted matter. Perhaps, however, we may be permitted to observe that to arrive at proper opinions concerning any doctrine or denomination it is but fair that we reserve our verdict until it is heard in its own behalf. Rendering a decision previous to this would result in deprivation to self of the information sought, and do injustice to the subject considered. We are aware that time is valuable and that the sundry essential labors of life, engaging nearly all the attention, make it necessary that Whatever time there be to spare should be devoted to the most important questions. It is that which we offer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Bible and Modern Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible and Modern Life Classic Reprint written by Clayton Sedgwick Cooper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Life IT is the purpose of this book to suggest a type of Bible study fitted to the needs of modern times. Bible study to many people is a dreary business. It seems far away from the com mon vital interests of humanity. Those who have made any thoroughgoing study of the Bible, however, know that it takes hold upon the realities, the common tasks, and the deep human loyalties in which men and women live and move and have their being. Should not, therefore, the Christian Scrip tures, both through courses of study and methods of organization, be treated natu rally, scholarly, sensibly, practically, and always in relation to real life and conduct? Modern scholarship is ministering greatly to the study of the Scriptures; it is helping to make the Bible real, not by making it less divine, but more human, more intelligent, preface more capable of sustaining faith In the liv ing God. Book The Gospel of John Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gospel of John Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of John The Gospel of John is perhaps the best loved and most frequently read of any of the gospels. Recent scholarship has thrown much light upon the authorship and purpose of this gospel and the part which it played in the developing thought and life Of the early Christians. Investigation, although modifying some current views of this gospel, has added greatly to its value as a Christian document. Viewed in the light of its origin and purpose, it becomes replete with life, not only the life of the Master and his disciples, but with the intellectual and spiritual struggles Of the Christians of the hundred years following the death of Jesus. This course presents the gospel in the light of recent scholarship but simply and for the study of individuals and groups, in the home, church, or the com munity. It is one of the Outline bible-study Courses prepared by the American Institute of Sacred Literature, twelve similar courses being mentioned on a preceding page. This course follows the general method of all the series, giving a daily assignment for reading from the Bible, but requiring no books of reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Gospel Jesus has no social gospel for bad people. His ideals presuppose goodness. They are meaningless to men and women who are out Of sympathy with God. That is why it is SO hard to get the gospel actually at work throughout our Social life. Sin is a fact that cannot be overlooked by social reformers any more than by any one else. It takes sound tim ber to make a sound ship; and it takes regenerate souls to make a regenerated society. The gospel is the message of a salvation assured to individuals and society who accept Jesus as their Lord. Download or read book The Gospel in the New Testament Classic Reprint written by Charles Harold Dodd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the New Testament The world, indeed, into which Christianity came was painfully aware of the need for salvation. Before the first Christian missionaries started out, zealous preachers of other faiths were abroad in the Roman Empire, offering their various remedies to the sick soul. Some of these remedies bore a curious family likeness to some of the most modern ways of salvation, and a brief survey of them will not lead us too far afield. The thoughts of men, in spite of all changes, tend to run in a comparatively small variety of channels; and after all, we are, in a broad View of the limitless sweep of history, not so very far removed even in time from these first-century seekers of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Life in the Modern World These questions have created in many thoughtful minds a profound sense of perplexity, and even of alarm. The world which confronts a modern man is very different from the provincial and primitive environment of the New Testament teaching; but even though this new world is less likely than that of Crete to produce liars, beasts, and glut tons, it seems quite as hard to adjust to the maxims of the Christian Gospel. A modern man, for example, finds himself compelled by circum stances to devote two-thirds of his waking hours to the making of his living and the securing of a margin of income, but when he turns, in some hastily snatched interval, to the New Testament,4 the christian life IN the modern world. Download or read book The World and the Gospel Classic Reprint written by Joseph Houndsworth Oldham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World and the Gospel As the months of war have passed, the conviction has grown in my mind that if the missionary move ment is to maintain its place among the many urgent tasks which will claim our attention on the restoration of peace, and to accomplish its work in the new world into which we are being brought, it is necessary for us to go back to first principles and take a fresh hold of the fundamental truths on which the whole undertaking rests. I believe that if we do this we shall find in the missionary idea, truly apprehended and heartily embraced, the liberation and inspiration that we need if we are to succeed in the difficult tasks before us in days to come. To meet the moral and spiritual needs, which in the light of the war are so patent and real, the Church requires a more passionate, exultant, venturesome faith in the Gospel entrusted to it, and the one sure way in which we can learn anew what the Gospel means is boldly to assert its right to rule the whole life of the world.
