Daily Mail Paul O'Grady is one of Britain's very best loved entertainers. He is known and adored by millions, whether as the creator of the acid-tongued Blonde Bombsite, Lily Savage, the presenter of the fantastically successful, award-winning Paul O'Grady Show on Channel 4 or the massive hit ITV show, For the Love of Dogs. Now, in his own unique voice, Paul O'Grady tells story of his early life in Irish Catholic Birkenhead that started him on the long and winding road from mischievous altar boy to national treasure. It is a brilliantly evoked, hilarious and often moving tale of gossip in the back yard, bragging in the corner shop and slanging matches on the front doorstep, populated by larger-than-life characters with hearts of gold and tongues as sharp as razors. At My Mother's Knee features an unforgettable cast of rogues, rascals, lovers, fighters, saints and sinners - and one iconic bus conductress. It's a book which really does have something for everyone and which reminds us that, when all's said and done, there's a bit of savage in all of us... Readers love At My Mother's Knee: 'I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down and the characters really just jumped out of the page.' ***** 'Candid, heart warming and also hilarious.' ***** 'Wonderfully written, laugh out loud funny and poignant by turns.' *****

Book Records of Girlhood

Download or read book Records of Girlhood written by Valerie Sanders and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to her 2000 anthology, Valerie Sanders again brings together an influential group of women whose autobiographical accounts of their childhoods show them making sense of the children they were and the women they have become. The fourteen women included juxtapose recollections of the bizarre with the quotidian and accounts of external events with the development of a complex inner life. Reading and acting are important themes, as is the precariousness of childhood, whether occasioned by a father's financial pressures or the early death of a parent. Significantly, most grew up expecting to earn their own living. The collection includes children's authors (Frances Hodgson Burnett and E. Nesbit), political figures (Emmeline Pankhurst and Louisa Twining), and well-known writers (Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Sarah Grand). Of relevance to scholars working in the fields of women’s autobiography, the history of childhood, and Victorian literature, this anthology includes a scholarly introduction and brief biographical sketches of each woman.

Download or read book The Necessity of Witness written by Ariaan Baan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of witness is a recurring theme in the work of Stanley Hauerwas: it is through enacting the truth in a world of lies, through seeking peace in a world of violence, that witnesses show who God is, who we are, and what the world is like. The Necessity of Witness is a study of Hauerwas and his fascinating but complex understanding of witness. Ariaan W. Baan argues that Hauerwas's approach makes a significant contribution to current debates in systematic theology on the relation between truth and life. Reading Hauerwas can be a precarious adventure. His rhetoric is overwhelming, but his argument is not always crystal clear and carefully formulated. With the help of semiotic and philosophical analysis and biblical exegesis, Baan articulates Hauerwas's intuitions, fills some of the gaps in his argumentation, and discloses hidden biases. The results of this analysis sometimes surprise. Baan notes that unexpected pericopes in Scripture such as Isaiah and Revelation support Hauerwas's account of witness, and concludes that his work offers insight into how in our late modern society such diverse groups as martyrs and pop stars offer implicit witness through their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I declare: "Gods though you be, offspring of the Most High all of you, Yet like any mortal you shall die; like any prince you shall fall." - Psalm 82:6-7 In the early morning hours of March 27, 1996, twenty armed members of the Groupe Islamique Arme raided the peaceful monastery of Tibhirine in Algeria and kidnapped seven of the nine monks who lived there. They were held for two months, then assassinated. For years, the monks had lived in harmony with the Muslim population in Algeria. They served the poor and needy in the area, providing education, employment, and medical assistance. The Blessed Martyrs of Tibhirine chose only to love, and this is their message for the Church today. Simply Christians: The Life and Message of the Blessed Martyrs of Tibhirine is much more than the story of a historical event. Each chapter focuses on one of the seven martyrs and how he uniquely lived the words of Christ: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Simply Christians: The Life and Message of the Blessed Martyrs of Tibhirine is the amazing true story that inspired the film "Of Gods and Men."
