XV If the term Lutheran applied mainly to a particular ecclesiastical organization, its use here would be objec tionable. But as the name of aspecific form of Christian life, referring, within the intellectual sphere, to a partic ular type of Christian doctrine, and within the sphere of exposition, to a particular mode of treating God's Word, it can certainly be employed without any re ection upon those who are not in the communion of the Lutheran Church. The object is not to bring into prominence the matters in doctrine and exposition that are distinctive of this Church; but at the same time not to avoid any state ment or interpretation because such is distinctive of Lu theranism. Lutheran exposition is with us that of con crete Evangelical Christianity, including all the features of distinctive Lutheranism, and proportioned according to the standards of Lutheranism. This necessarily implies the grateful use and recognition of much in other exposi tors that does not claim to be Lutheran. For such is the Lutheran conception of the Church and Christianity itself, as not to be determined by external boundaries, but, as the communion of saints, to underlie and pass beyond the limits of all ecclesiastical organizations, imparting to all the children of God, however scattered, a share in each other's labors, and each other's confession.
