Book excerpt: Too often Christmas gets swallowed up in the busyness of shopping and sending cards and wrapping presents. As we rush around, we often miss the wonder of what Christmas is all about. Christmas began with a gift given to the human race two thousand years ago. It was a child, born in a Bethlehem stable and laid in a manger. His birth was announced by wise men guided from the East by a very special star. It was the gift we needed most: a Savior, the Holy Son of God. This is the good news proclaimed by the angel: "Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:10-11). Why was God's gift of a Savior so important? There are three reasons: The greatness of the need. The future of the human race was at stake. Sin made havoc of God's creation and brought estrangement from its Creator.The greatness of the gift. Not only was the need great, but the gift was also great! "This is My beloved Son," God said, "in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17).The greatness of the cost. Read the inspired portraits of the suffering of Christ in Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, and Psalm 69. The cross was only part of the price He gladly paid. Jesus Christ did not die for His own sins or because He was a victim of circumstances. He came, as God's supreme gift to you and me. The Bible pointedly asks: "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3). Have you overlooked the really important gift of Christmas? Is God prompting you to look through the odds and ends of Christmas? God's gift for you is waiting. Don't miss it. Right now, wherever you are, you can receive the costliest gift, Jesus Christ the Savior. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

John 8:12 If there is one truth that leaps out at us from the pages of Scripture at Christmas, it is this: Jesus came to be the Light of the world! Light came into this dark world when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Christmas is about light! We love to sing the Christmas carol, "Silent Night." But this great hymn is not about night or darkness. It's about the Light. The third stanza of "Silent Night" says, "Son of God, love's pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace." We sing another Christmas carol, "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." The last stanza invites us to "Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, risen with healing in His wings." We sing at Christmas because we have something to sing about! Light has come into the world, and we don't ever need to walk in darkness again! Are you walking in spiritual darkness today? Recognize that you are a sinner, that you can do nothing to save yourself, and ask Jesus, the Light of the World, to come and be Lord and Savior of your life. The good news is that if you look to Him, He will shine His light into your heart! The Babe of Bethlehem is the Light of the world. He will remove your spiritual darkness with the glory of His wonderful presence if you will only ask Him. Pray something like this: Dear God, I know I am a sinner and desperately in need of Your forgiveness of my sins. I need the light of Your love to shine through my spiritual darkness. I understand that I can only receive this forgiveness through the Babe of Bethlehem, your Son, Jesus Christ, who died for my sins and rose from the dead that I might spend all of eternity with You in heaven. Right now I ask Jesus into my life to be my Savior and Lord. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen. About the Painting Thomas Kinkade, the "Painter of Light," is a committed Christian and uses his art to point to the Author of Light-Jesus Christ. In his painting Stonehearth Hutch Kinkade uses the familiar symbols of wreath and tree to herald the coming of Christmas Day. He also uses other symbols to express the spirit of the season. The lone, rough-hewn stone cottage represents the rock of faith. Outside there is only the solitude of the woods-with no carriage track or footprint to hint at human comfort. But inside is a golden light, suggesting the hope of Christmas. The odd little path, winding and slippery, leads to the cottage door. Kinkade's prayer is that "Stonehearth Hutch will communicate to many, in a language as universal as Christmas wreaths, yet as deeply as faith." So, although I've good news for you, I have to tell you about the bad news first. That's because to find the solution, you've got to understand the problem. To find the cure, you have to understand the medical issues involved. To get where you want to go, you first need to know where you are. The Bad News: An uncrossable separation God did not create us like robots to automatically love and mechanically obey him. The first man and woman, Adam and Eve, chose to disobey God and sin against him. Each of us since has been born with that same sinful and disobedient nature. That results in spiritual separation from God. The Bible says that "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...the wages of sin is death" (Romans 3:23, 6:23). People often sense that something is wrong and try many ways to bridge the separation between themselves and God. But God reminds them, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death" (Proverbs 14:12). And "Your iniquities sins] have made a separation between you and your God" (Isaiah 59:2). Only the cross of Christ spans that chasm. The Good News: The cross--a bridge far enough Though Jesus is God's sinless Son, he became a human in order to substitute himself in place of us and pay the penalty for our sins. The Bible says "there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5). "Christ...suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18). It also says "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us....the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 5:8, 6:23). Christ died on a cross and rose from the grave (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). By doing that he bridged the otherwise uncrossable chasm between God and us, providing us the only way to have forgiveness of sin, a personal relationship with God, and eternal life. Your choice: Accept or reject But in order to receive God's offer of forgiveness and have a right relationship with him, we must trust in Jesus Christ and receive him as our Substitute. Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). And the Bible adds, "To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). If we place our trust in Jesus Christ, "We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1). "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son to die for us], that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). What is your decision? The Bible tells us plainly that "It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). Even though the bad news (eternal judgment for our sin) can be trumped by the good news (that Jesus died on the cross in our place to take the penalty for our sin), it depends on a choice you must make during your time on earth. The Bible says that is the only way to live to please God now and to be prepared for eternity. Will you receive Jesus Christ right now and trust in him alone for forgiveness and eternal life? Admit your need for God's forgiveness. Turn from trusting in anything else for eternal life and trust only in Christ. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross, came back to life from the grave, and is your only way to Heaven. Accept Jesus' offer to forgive your sins and become your Savior. You may want to tell him in a prayer like this: "Dear Jesus, thank you for making it possible for me to f
