Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Humor, Bad Taste is the first extensive sociological study of the relationship between humor and social background. Using a combination of interview materials, survey data, and historical materials, the book explores the relationship between humor and gender, age, regional background, and especially, humor and social class in the Netherlands. The final chapter focuses on national differences, exploring the differences between the American and the Dutch sense of humor, again using a combination of interview and survey materials. The starting point for this exploration of differences in sense of humor is one specific humorous genre: the joke. The joke is not a very prestigious genre; in the Netherlands even less so than in the US. It is precisely this lack of status that made it a good starting point for asking questions about humor and taste. Interviewees generally had very pronounced opinions about the genre, calling jokes "their favorite kind humor", but also "completely devoid of humor" and "a form of intellectual poverty". Good Humor, Bad Taste attempts to explain why jokes are good humor to some, bad taste to others. The focus on this one genre enables Good Humor, Bad Taste to have a very wide scope. The book not only covers the appreciation and evaluation of jokes by different social groups and in different cultures, and its relationship with wider humor styles. It also describes the genre itself: the history of the genre, its decline in status from the sixteenth century onward, and the way the topics and the tone of jokes have changed over the last fifty years of the twentieth century.

Download or read book Harpo Speaks written by Harpo Marx and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-03-17 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, this is the autobiography of Harpo Marx, the silent comedian of The Marx Brothers fame. Writing of his life before, during, and after becoming famous by incorporating lovely and humorous stories and anecdotes, Harp Marx tells of growing up in a rough neighborhood and being poor, being bullied and dropping out of school, teaching himself to read, write, tell time, and to play the piano and harp. He speaks of his close relationships with his family members, particularly his mother and brother Leonard (Chico), who would become his partner-in-crime on screen, and the profound effect that the death of his parents Sam and Minnie had on him. Filled with insider tales of his antics on and off stage, and the hard graft he and his brothers put into reaching their level of success, the reader becomes privy to a rare glimpse into Marx’ thoughts on everything and everyone he had the privilege of working with. The book reveals the friendships he forged and the blows he was dealt in show-business, and of his marriage to his wife, actress Susan Fleming, with whom he adopted four children and built a ranch on which they lived happily ever after, along with numerous animals. A thoroughly enjoyable read. “This is a riotous story which is reasonably mad and as accurate as a Marx brother can make it. Despite only a year and a half of schooling, Harpo, or perhaps his collaborator, is the best writer of the Marx Brother. Highly recommended.”—Library Journal “A funny, affectionate and unpretentious autobiography done with a sharply professional assist from Rowland Barber.”—New York Times Book Review “This is a racy autobiography by the mute Marx Brother with the rolling eyes, oversized pants and red wig who could send a glissando reeling over his harp.[...] It is enjoyable reading and polished writing...”—Kirkus Review

Book excerpt: THE JOKE-TELLERS HANDBOOK OR 1,999 BELLY LAUGHS ROBERT ORBEN “Good ladies, evening and gentlemen . . . That does it! Next time I’ll rehearse everything! . . .” That’s the only one example of what you’ll find in this unusual collection of modern humor—professional humor—the kind of material used by the top TV, movie and night-club comedians in their monologues. Unlike our speaker, there’s no confusion in Robert Orben’s collection of nearly two thousand “one-line” jokes—all time-tested and well-rehearsed. A top comedy writer well-known to the trade, Mr. Orben offers this handbook as a stockpile of bright, laugh-loaded one-liners, ready for a multitude of uses besides sheer enjoyment. Arranged in categories, these comedy explosions cover everything from air conditioning to women drivers. There are good opening lines and, if you need them, good closing ones too. Even George Washington and stamp collecting do not escape Mr. Orben’s comic grilling. Humor is one of the best devices to create a friendly basis of understanding between individuals and groups. Laughs are vital to the effectiveness of speeches, instruction, and sales presentation. Mr. Orben describes—on a level that is professional as well as entertaining—how to use this type of humor for practical purposes, and for sheer entertainment and enjoyment as well. An indispensable book for public speakers, businessmen, entertainers and…just about everyone.

John Kennedy Toole's hero, one Ignatius J. Reilly, is "huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original characters, denizens of New Orleans' lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures" (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times).

Book How to Tell a Joke

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marcus Tullius Cicero
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2021-03-30
  • ISBN : 0691211078
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book How to Tell a Joke written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timeless advice about how to use humor to win over any audience Can jokes win a hostile room, a hopeless argument, or even an election? You bet they can, according to Cicero, and he knew what he was talking about. One of Rome’s greatest politicians, speakers, and lawyers, Cicero was also reputedly one of antiquity’s funniest people. After he was elected commander-in-chief and head of state, his enemies even started calling him “the stand-up Consul.” How to Tell a Joke provides a lively new translation of Cicero’s essential writing on humor alongside that of the later Roman orator and educator Quintilian. The result is a timeless practical guide to how a well-timed joke can win over any audience. As powerful as jokes can be, they are also hugely risky. The line between a witty joke and an offensive one isn’t always clear. Cross it and you’ll look like a clown, or worse. Here, Cicero and Quintilian explore every aspect of telling jokes—while avoiding costly mistakes. Presenting the sections on humor in Cicero’s On the Ideal Orator and Quintilian’s The Education of the Orator, complete with an enlightening introduction and the original Latin on facing pages, How to Tell a Joke examines the risks and rewards of humor and analyzes basic types that readers can use to write their own jokes. Filled with insight, wit, and examples, including more than a few lawyer jokes, How to Tell a Joke will appeal to anyone interested in humor or the art of public speaking.

Book Humor Seriously

Download or read book Humor Seriously written by Jennifer Aaker and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WALL STREET JOURNAL, LOS ANGELES TIMES, AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER • Anyone—even you!—can learn how to harness the power of humor in business (and life), based on the popular class at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Don’t miss the authors’ TED Talk, “Why great leaders take humor seriously,” online now. “The ultimate guide to using the magical power of funny as a tool for leadership and a force for good.”—Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of When and Drive We are living through a period of unprecedented uncertainty and upheaval in both our personal and professional lives. So it should come as a surprise to exactly no one that trust, human connection, and mental well-being are all on the decline. This may seem like no laughing matter. Yet, the research shows that humor and laughter are among the most valuable tools we have at our disposal for strengthening bonds and relationships, diffusing stress and tension, boosting resilience, and performing when the stakes are high. That’s why Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas teach the popular course Humor: Serious Business at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where they help some of the world’s most hard-driving, blazer-wearing business minds infuse more humor and levity into their work and lives. In Humor, Seriously, they draw on findings by behavioral scientists, world-class comedians, and inspiring business leaders to reveal how humor works and—more important—how you can use more of it, better. Aaker and Bagdonas unpack the theory and application of humor: what makes something funny, how to mine your life for material, and simple ways to identify and leverage your unique humor style. They show how to use humor to rebuild vital connections; appear more confident, competent, and authentic at work; and foster cultures where levity and creativity can thrive. President Dwight David Eisenhower once said, “A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.” If Dwight David Eisenhower, the second least naturally funny president (after Franklin Pierce), thought humor was necessary to win wars, build highways, and warn against the military-industrial complex, then you might consider learning it too.

Book The Politically Incorrect Real Estate Agent Handbook

Download or read book The Politically Incorrect Real Estate Agent Handbook written by Porcelli Jr F Peter and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WARNING: This book is not about politics nor does it promote being a jerk; however, victims, wimpy-minded, and lazy people will hate it. This real estate handbook is not like the others: it has flow charts and over 100 common (and not-so-common) real estate agent tasks presented as simple, step-by-step recipes. And it has pictures. And it's funny (or at least grin-worthy). In other words, it's comprehensive and not boring. The best part is: as a collection of brief articles, this book is easy to digest in small bites; however, because real estate tasks are so interrelated, each article is heavily cross-referenced. This way, the reader may delve deep into any topic (or train of thought) by either turning the page or by following a cross-reference. Such layout makes for easy navigation now and in the future, because you'll wanna return to certain articles over and over again. So, you can read it from cover-to-cover, or you can choose your own real estate adventure, reading only the bits that fit your current curiosity. You will learn: How-to choose a broker who fits your needs; How-to maximize your prospecting efforts (including 105 ways to meet prospects); How-to pre-qualify buyers and sellers (so you don't waste time on duds); How-to discover what your buyers really want; How-to show property and help your buyers decide; How-to conduct a slam-dunk listing presentation; How-to attract buyers to your listings; How-to draft offers/create contracts/negotiate (including low-ball and multiple offer situations); How-to get your clients to the closing table; How-to avoid commission breath and ensure you get paid; How-to study the marketplace through statistical analysis; How-to valuate real property and pick The Right Price; How-to business plan/track agent stats/identify and alleviate bottlenecks; How-to create a niche for more income; How-to create and practice scripts; How-to create and refine systems; How-to banish victimhood and take charge of your real estate sales business. Plus much, much more! Frankly, this book should cost $100, but the author wants to give it away cheap. Get yours now before he changes his mind.
