Book excerpt: This book is a commentary on the Pythagorean Golden Verses, a neglected, but once very popular poem of the Hellenistic period. The goal of the poem is to introduce its readers to the basic moral, religious and philosophical doctrines of the Pythagorean sect and to guide them to spiritual maturity. The first part of the book treats still unresolved introductory matters such as the date, authorship, genre, composition, and the historical locus of the poem. This is followed by a text with translation on facing pages, and a detailed commentary containing a wealth of comparative material from the Greco-Roman period, including early Christianity and Judaism. Particularly valuable are the extensive discussions of the moral topoi and religious themes encountered in the poem.

Book excerpt: Everyone on Planet Earth, with even the most basic understanding of mathematics, owes a great debt to Pythagoras, the great Greek geometrician of the ancient world whose mathematical maxims have informed the constructive arm of man for over two millennia and whose spiritual and esoteric axioms have enlightened all great initiatory mystery schools since his incarnation. Through this book, The Golden Verses of Pythagoras, Pythagoras' surviving disciples introduced his science and philosophy to the world. These teachings helped to establish underground mystery schools throughout the Mediterranean world, with fragments of the work continuing to influence modern mystery schools and fraternal orders, such as Freemasonry, even today. The teachings contained in this book have sparked curiosity and divine insight in the minds of men for two thousand years. In that spirit, the Masonic Publishing Company presents the Golden Verses of Pythagoras, such that the lessons contained may once again take root in the geometer's mind and guide his hand in all its works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pythagoras of Samos (born between 580 and 572 BC, died between 500 and 490 BC) was an Ionian Greek mathematician and founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. He is often revered as a great mathematician, mystic and scientist; however some have questioned the scope of his contributions to mathematics and natural philosophy. He is best known for the Pythagorean theorem, which bears his name. Known as “the father of numbers†, Pythagoras made influential contributions to philosophy and religious teaching in the late 6th century BC. He was the first man to call himself a philosopher, or lover of wisdom, and Pythagorean ideas exercised a marked influence on Plato. Unfortunately, very little is known about Pythagoras because none of his writings have survived. Many of the accomplishments credited to Pythagoras may actually have been accomplishments of his colleagues and successors.

Book excerpt: The Golden Verses of Pythagoras are a collection of moral exhortations. The exact origins of the golden verses are unknown and there are varying opinions regarding their dating. It appears that the verses may have been known as early as the third century BC but their existence as we know them cannot be confirmed prior to the fifth century AD. The golden verses enjoyed great popularity and were widely distributed in late antiquity being often quoted. Their renown persisted during the medieval ages and into the renaissance. The Neoplatonists used the golden verses as part of their preparatory program of moral instruction and a number of neoplatonic commentaries on the verses are extant. Pythagoreanism was the system of esoteric and metaphysical beliefs held by Pythagoras and his followers, the Pythagorean cult, who were considerably influenced by mathematics. Pythagoreanism originated in the 5th century BCE and greatly influenced Platonism. Later revivals of Pythagorean doctrines led to what is now called Neopythagoreanism.
