Download or read book Beau Geste Complete Series Beau Geste Trilogy Good Gestes Tales written by P. C. Wren and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 1364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael "Beau" Geste is the protagonist. The main narrator (among others) is his younger brother John. The three Geste brothers are a metaphor for the British upper class values of a time gone by, and "the decent thing to do" is the leitmotif of the trilogy. The Geste brothers are orphans and have been brought up by their aunt at Brandon Abbas. The rest of Beau's band are mainly Isobel, Claudia and Augustus. When a precious jewel known as the "Blue Water" goes missing, Beau leaves Britain to join the French Foreign Legion, followed by his brothers, Digby (his twin) and John. Beau Sabreur and Beau Ideal are sequel novels and Good Gestes is a collection of short tales mainly about the Geste brothers and their American friends Hank and Buddy. Percival Christopher Wren (1875-1941) was an English writer, mostly of adventure fiction. He is remembered best for Beau Geste, a much-filmed book of 1924, involving the French Foreign Legion in North Africa. This was one of 33 novels and short story collections that he wrote, mostly dealing with colonial soldiering in Africa. While his fictional accounts of life in the pre-1914 Foreign Legion are highly romanticized, his details of Legion uniforms, training, equipment and barrack room layout are generally accurate, which has led to unproven suggestions that Wren himself served with the legion. Billy Byrne is a mucker, a low class American born in Chicago's ghetto. He grows up a thief and a mugger. He is not chivalrous nor kind, and has only meager ethics, never giving evidence against a friend or leaving someone behind. He chooses a life of robbery and violence, disrespecting those who work for a living. He has a deep hatred for wealthy society. When falsely accused of murder, Billy flees to San Francisco and is shanghaied aboard a ship. The ship's secret mission is to hijack a millionaire's daughter, Barbara Harding, for ransom. After a terrible storm, the ship is damaged and Billy rescues Barbara. He protects her from the jungle for weeks and they fall in love. In The Return of a Mucker Billy goes back to his old Chicago haunts intending to clear his name. His time with Barbara imbued him with faith in the law and justice. However, he soon realizes that the system is more interested in finding someone guilty than in finding the guilty party. Awaiting the verdict, he reads that Barbara and Mallory are about to marry. The Oakdale Affair features the Return of The Mucker sidekick, Bridge. In the home of Jonas Prim, president of an Oakdale bank, a thief makes off with a servant's clothing and valuables belonging to Prim's daughter Abigail. Escaping, the thief later encounters a group of hobos and is taken for one of them, the Oskaloosa Kid. Two of the hobos attempt to murder the newcomer for the loot, who shoots at one and flees. Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American writer best known for his creations of the jungle hero Tarzan and the heroic Mars adventurer John Carter, although he produced works in many genres.

Assassins are not always the bad guys. In Abbarkon, it is best to keep your head down and your guard up. As long as he can remember, 14-year-old Flint has done exactly that. He ignores both the whispers of a monster named Martokallu and the rumours of a rebel group assassinating high-born dukes. Those stories mean little to him as he washes dishes and scrubs floors. On the one day that Flint breaks his own rule to defend a friend, his master ends up dead. Accident or not, Flint is sentenced to death. Hearing of his exploits, the Hawks rescue him from the executioner and whisk him away to the hidden village of Halklyen. Will the Hawks be strong enough to win against an army of Martokallu's Followers? Book 2: The God Sword The dwarves guard a secret. The Hawks must prove they are worthy. The Kingdom of Abbarkon is safe. There is a new king and Martokallu is dead. Or is he? If he returns, the Hawks will need the God Sword. Download or read book Dodo Trilogy Complete Collection Dodo A Detail of the Day Dodo s Daughter Dodo Wonders written by E. F. Benson and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Dodo Trilogy - Complete Collection: Dodo - A Detail of the Day, Dodo's Daughter & Dodo Wonders" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Dodo Trilogy is composed of three novels by E.F. Benson. His very first novel, Dodo: A Detail of the Day (1893), which featured a portrait of the composer and militant suffragette Ethel Smyth (which she "gleefully acknowledged", according to actress Prunella Scales) was back then fashionably controversial and became an instant success. He repeated the success of Dodo, with the same cast of characters a generation later: Dodo the Second (1914), "a unique chronicle of the pre-1914 Bright Young Things" and Dodo Wonders (1921), "a first-hand social history of the Great War in Mayfair and the Shires. Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer, known professionally as E.F. Benson. He started his novel writing career in 1893 with the fashionably controversial Dodo, which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, with sequels to this novel, but the greatest success came relatively late in his career with The Mapp and Lucia series consisting of six novels and two short stories. The novels feature humorous incidents in the lives of (mainly) upper-middle-class British people in the 1920s and 1930s, vying for social prestige and one-upmanship in an atmosphere of extreme cultural snobbery. Benson was also known as a writer of atmospheric, oblique, and at times humorous or satirical ghost stories.
